A recent protest against government corruption.

Santo Domingo.- The same day the 2009 Global Report on Corruption is released where Dominican citizens see much corruption, the most recent of a spate of scandals in the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has led to the firing of to 27 lawyers and Legal department employees on Wednesday, though there’s no mention of charges being filed.

Transparency International presented the report ‘Corruption and private sector’ today in New York and just like in 2007, the Corruption Perception  Index (CPI) gave the country a score of 3.0 in a scale from a low of zero to high of 10, and ranks Dominican Republic 102 in a list of 180 countries.

In the JCE the firings occur after an investigation confirmed irregularities in its Legal section, which confirmed that even fugitives managed to get issued several identities.

For Dominican Republic, Transparency International’s corruption figures when analyzed show a regression, since the CPI places it in the same level with Bolivia, Djibouti, Lebanon, Mongolia, Rwanda and Tanzania, whereas Chile and Uruguay are ranked best in Latin America, with a CPI of 6.9, the same as France. They are followed in the region by Puerto Rico, Cuba, El Salvador, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Guatemala, the English Caribbean, and Jamaica.

Instead of firing the corrupt officials how about making examples of them with a stiff sentence and forfeiture of all of their assets including their families. Start punishing people to get a grip on this. The only thing I am shocked about is that we are not number one on the list for most corrupt country on the planet.

VeronicaDR is so correct.

Stop just firing them. Send them to jail.

How stupid can you be? You know that people will keep doing bad things unless they get the ‘stick’.

who is going to arrest the corrupt politicians? the police? they will be in jail themselves. then, who would try the cases? the judges would be in jail. and who would man the jails? the wardens would be in jail, mostly for aiding and abetting the escape of dangerous druglords. oh, well.

Thanks for telling us something that we already knew. Our national slogan should be:

If you do the crime, you won't do the time.

It's like politics from Berlin to Washington: you can't send someone to jail who has the goods on you too.
Everyone 'has the goods' on everyone ele — it's circular Russian roulette...
