SANTO DOMINGO. - Hundreds of Santo Domingo Metro passengers were left stranded in the different stations, when a blackout halted service for more than one hour, which again caused chaos and forced commuters to face delays of more than 45 minutes.

The Metro employees themselves reported the outage at 7 a.m., but when asked when service was restored, the passengers said the first train hadn’t appeared by 7:39 a.m., despite that regular service starts at 6:30 a.m.

Transport Reform Office (OPRET) assistant director Leonel Carrasco declined comment, and announced a press conference Friday morning.

At the beginning of September the Metro was halted for around seven minutes when a general blackout affected the country.

The plans were handed to Huchi Lora and they are about 30 boxes of paper work what has he done with it? I don't know but it has been proven that mass transit is the way to go for small countries like ours because we don't make cars and maybe never will and we need to find ways to keep the money going around the island. I do have to say that they could have picked a better option to build a train like maybe restoring some old routes to move goods was a higher priority than having a pretty train. We are small so we have to become more of a produce than a consumer.

every transit system in every city has minor problems. No one likes the price tag for this metro but it had to be started. We need to reduce the number of conchos on the street

No, no, no !!!! Need to solve the power and, water problems first. I have stated before this only affects 1% of the population of Santo Dominigo. Whereas power and water affects us all. Look it is so easy to solve the traffic problems here. No trucks during the day in the city. All deliveries made at night into local drop points. Why have a giant coke truck blocking everything. Taxi and buses may only pick up passengers at certain places. Odd even day on cars. If your tag ends in an odd number Mon. Wed. Even Tues, Thurs. Friday shopping and bill paying day. Bill paying on line. No need to go to pay the Elect. bill, phone bill etc. Simple stuff. Strick inspection on all cars, taxis, buses etc. This can be done. No more dumping sand, cement blocks in the middle of the road to build a house. Tearing up the road because you want to put in a water line. Then never fix it. I can go on. Vota Gringo. I fix the problems. ( lol )

captrob,
if they would have a real metro system in SD and Santiago to run the routes with the most traffic, this would help reduce the tapones

Oh, i agree on that point. Years ago we had a train that ran from Monte Cristi to La Romana. There are still a couple running on private sugar cane fields. I only made some very good points that work in large cities all over the world. But the metro just for the capital is nothing more than a giant windfall for the politicians.

Yup this was unexpected:) NO studies were done on this and I am waiting for the big shoe to drop.

Blackout is nothing just wait for the tragedy that is going to happen with shoddy workmanship, lower standards than needed to line pockets. It's going to happen.

No one robbed the metal tracks as yet... because metal and other commodity prices are too low. However, once the worldwide economy heats up again.. the tracks are fair game.

Remember, the RD was a major exporter of Cooper even though it is NOT mined there. Que vida!

We spent millions to dig below ground in an area prone to black-outs, tremors, Hurricane and subsequent storm surges which could flood the tunnels. Remember, JD told you first!

There should be an expaned "above ground" national rail system to move produce faster and cheaper to ports for exports as well moving people across country (without gas guzzling & pollution generating buses). Does anyone get this?

CaptainRob, a wonderful post. i wish those who believe that the only way to solve traffic congestion is to build a subway would read it ten times. why do people believe that it is only passenger transit that is causing traffic jams? what about all the heavy trucks and other pieces of equipment that use the streets.?how about eveil parking habits, where people block intersections, among other things.? do people realise that traffic lights are synchronised to operate within normal conditions? which means that if you move forward at a normal rate, and stay within the speed limits, you will go through a number of lights before you have to stop. if you act like an a-hole, and jackrabbit start, then cut into the lane in front, causing the lane to slow, then you have anarchy, or catastrophic breakdown. people need to learn to drive like civilised creatures . no amount of metros will fix congestion. there is a very long street in brooklyn called Linden Boulevard. you can get on that street

Parkway, and, if you drive at the appropriate speed, you can go through dozens of lights without encountering a red. the jerks who drive at seventy mph always get caught by the guys who drive at forty.

Josean, as much as i despise the metro as an idea, i wish it well, if only because the people who get nothing from it are the ones who paid for it. but, i am afraid that you could be right. this is just one glitch, but i hope the chickens of hasty execution do not come home to roost. as i said before, a subway is not a passola. these are complex creatures, and, when they go awry, they do so in a gargantuan way. as i posted over a year ago, it took years to repair a few miles of track in the Bronx. and one should take note that those were highly trained and experienced guys with the latest equipment. Fausto will not fix these things with a pair of pliers and an adjustable wrench.

yes, Josean. all the kids who will not get a decent education, or proper medical care, because some juvenile brain decided to spend a billion dollars on 1% of the population.

dread,

Since you are good in math, maybe someday when you have time you could work up numbers on the outcome of what it would have meant to spend $750,000,000 dollars on education in the DR.

the numbers begin to reach mind boggling heights, because there are so many things , negative and positive, that have to be factored. on the minus side, consider the phrase "idle hands are the devil's workshop". so, consider the mayhem that uneducated, unprepared, unemployable people wreak on society. then, consider the generational changes which can be brought about if education improves. now Belkis is no longer a ward of the state, and a parasite on gringo, but can make her own way through life. the benefits are almost incalculable. besides, i REFUSE to believe the 750 million tag.

"the benefits are almost incalculable'"

I had hoped you would have reached that conclusion!

And regarding the 750, I agree the jury is stil out on that one.

jojosnogood,

"only people in the capital can use.'

Not even the majority of the capita's residents or even the residents in the Mama Tingo to La Feria run: just 20,000 per day and shrinking, when they assured us 200,000 per day.

LIE-onel Fernandez and the PLD are not capable of even planning a turn in a circle.
