SANTO DOMINGO.- The opposition PRD party’s nationwide voting to select several senior positions resulted in little surprise, as charges of fraud and irregularities surfaced early Monday morning by one of the two candidates for the entity’s General Secretary post, Guido Gomez Mazara.

He said ballot boxes were stolen in many provinces where he was leading in the vote count against his rival Orlando Jorge Mera, and that several senior PRD leaders issued figures not validated by the organization’s electoral officials. “In Puerto Plata they went crazy; it was a way to confront me, they took the ballot boxes and turned then upside down.”

He said given his reported lead in many populated areas, senior party leader Tomas Hernandez Alberto admitted the alleged irregularities, and “went around issuing figures that hadn’t been validated. It was a crafty maneuver, it was a way to impose Jorge Mera’ it’s a vulgarity.”

In the second bulletin issued after 2:20 a.m. by the PRD’s convention organization commission, Jorge was leading with 91,459 votes, or 58.22%, whereas Gómez had 62,181, or 39.52%, with 29% of the ballots counted.

Gomez, whose rival had the support of PRD president Miguel Vargas, said the party’s “ultraconservative wing” is behind the alleged irregularities. “I’ve got my affidavits, its the way for the ultra-conservative wing of the PRD to impose its candidate.”

Speaking in the program El Dia with Huchi Lora and Patricia Solano, Gomez affirmed he won the election, and blamed Alfredo Pacheco, another senior leader, of also being behind the alleged irregularities. “We are people who won’t let ourselves be stymied, I won vote by vote, no matter what Alfredo Pacheco went around babbling on a helicopter.”

Until they start punishing these people there is no reason for them to stop. Fraud during a public election sounds like treason to me. They should hang this guy and anyone found tampering with ballots in the town square for all to see.

VeronicaDR is absolutely correct.

Dominicans could care less about corruption. It is inbred. Corruption is the only aspect of Dominican life that they are transparent about.

Dominicans wear corruption as a badge of honor.

LF is supposed to lead by example and to date he is an empty suit. 80% of his country is considered in poverty level, Segura, his friend, ruined the electricity sector and his “Zero Tolerance” rhetoric is one BIG lie.

As long as he keeps the majority ignorant he and all the ‘influential’ families will keep their entitled mentality.

It is long past the time the OLD regime be ousted and the young, morally intelligent Dominicans come to power.

This is primarily a problem of government culture and not just something that should be blamed on LF. Yes, LF has some issues that he is not dealing with on this but do you really believe that PLD is going to do a better job? there were 3 bank failures during the opposition's time in office. This is not a problem of party or of an individual. The culture needs to be adjusted and laws need to be enforced. In the US this would absolutely result in jail time or expulsion. This culture of government laughs at these stories as if it were nothing. People throw around these headlines as if its ok for someone to just tamper with election boxes. ITS NOT OK. If anyone violates this they are violating an important part of the social contract. The population did not come into agreement to let a person represent them through fraud but through their mutual agreement. It is the choice of the people and their right to make this decision. Anything other than this is slavery.

robertojose,
This is the other alternative to LF. I sure wonder how much better the country will be without him. PRD is "GUARANTEED" to win the next election. I just wonder what they mean by guarantees???

It's a done deal. In return for not being prosecuted for all their corruption and crimincal activities, the PLD has agreed to nominate Daniel Media as their candidate, which assures a PRD victory.

josean,
you got any information on this guy Guillermo? I can't seem to find much on him. Seems as if he didn't get much votes this last election. I am curious to know a bit more.

dominica,

dominica,

I am the most skeptical person you would ever meet regarding politicians, my jury is always out if you will, but when you hear Dr. Moreno in person you come away with the feeling he is the real deal. ALL Dominicans should seriously study him because guys like him come around only once in a generation.

I don't ask anyone to blindly vote or follow him, that would be disrespectful, but I do ask that people read his book "Alianza: Una Propuesta de país" try to hear him speak in person and then make an educated decision whether or not

he is deserving of your support.

I have made that decision and he is my candidate for 2012.

PS

His wife is Aura Celeste Fernandez one of the Dominican electoral judges, one of the most transparent and dignified persons you can ever meet; eminently qualified in her own right to be the president of the republic as well.

In my opinion they are the ultimate Dominican Power Couple!

They have been fighting corruption all their lives.

Maybe you could tell me if he has or will have enough power to control his own party . I seems to me that what ever party is in power there are favours to repay and people who financially support the party ,or do work for the party, no matter what party it is, get richer when their party is elected.

In very posts, many people, including me, have hoped that a bright young person, free of all the tradition of corruption and pay offs and so on,would emerge ..A bit like JFK did. Is that out of the question for either party

However, Dr, Moreno seems to have very good credentials from what I have read here .As a resident rather than a citizen, I do not get a vote but I follow it all with interest

dominca,

Here is what i mean about our next president, Guillermo Moreno's wife:

Dominicans tired of parties

No, Dominicans are not tired of fun late night parties, but rather of the nepotism and party politics that have come to define the nation's political system.

Outspoken Central Electoral Board (JCE) judge Aura Celeste Fernandez says that the levels of clientelism in DR politics were of great concern. She said that it takes time and efforts away from really strengthening the party system, adding that this was the reason many of the parties were going through difficult times. She warned that clientelism could cause parties to eventually collapse.
