Santo Domingo. - The representative in Dominican Republic of Colombia’s Cali cartel was arrested Sunday and handed over to United States authorities a few hours later under heavy escort.

The Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) said Luis Alberto Santacruz Echeverri, alias Lucho, half brother of the notorious Jose Santacruz Londoño (Chepe,) considered one of the strong men of the crime ring after the brothers Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, was the head of an organization which imported cocaine dropped from airplanes in the South and Northeast.

In a statement, the DCND said the Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA) also wanted Santacruz was on narcotics charges.  He was detained on 27 de Febrero and Lincoln avenues, one of the capital’s busiest intersections.

He had been living in the resort town Juan Dolio (east) during which an arrest warrant had been issued against him.

A private airplane with several federal agents arrived in Las Americas Airport (AILA) to escort Santacruz to New York, where South District Court judge Andrew J. Peck had issued a warrant on September 24, on charges of conspiracy to import hundreds of kilos of cocaine to the U.S. “For that reason he was immediately handed over to be tried in New York,” DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebrón said in a statement.

Makes sort of wonder why the DR government lets these guys in, buy real estate and live the good life. It is not until the US puts pressure on them do they hand over the bad guys. Sad...

They should hire a U.S. based contractor to come in and hunt down the cartel members...it could be done in 60 days...someone like Xe (Blackwater), Triple Canopy etc......

Give them Carte Blanche to run the streets, the coastal waters and the campos....with impunity and watch the chopos and thier Colombian handlers run like rats

Hey Dogg with that kind of logistic even the politico might get arrested LOL. But true that kind of logistic, an a country the side of Dominican Republic it take approximately 3 to 5 years to sweep the street of Maliantes. Even the military's can be infiltrate to find crooks among the ranking file..

The drug trade is a proffit loss issue. It is not in any way a war of ideology. What is going on in Mexico is that for so long it was allowed that a new class of aristicrat was formed where 2nd and 3rd generation of high living thugs became mainstream.
Here in the DR it is still outsiders doing the management with payoffs to the policos that are already established without the drug trade.
Just make the cost of doing business high enough.
