SANTO DOMINGO.- The Assembly to revise the Constitution last night rejected the inclusion of the text an amnesty via which the children would have the Dominican nationality if their parents had entered the country with a contract or agreement for farm work and also suppressed 10 citizens’ rights consecrated in the first reading as collective or diffuse.

The Revision Commission submitted the proposal for the reconsideration, at the request of assemblyman Frank Martinez and was rejected 132 votes for and 20 against.

The Assembly upheld the text approved in the first reading, which combines jus sanguini (by bloodline) and jus soli (by place of birth) for the nationality as the ruling PLD and opposition PRD parties agreed.

Suppressed rights

Also as the result of the agreement the assembly members suppressed 10 of the 13 collective or diffuse rights in Article 37 of the constitutional reform bill  approved in the first reading.

Only approved were the rights to conserve the ecological balance, the fauna and flora; the protection of the environment; and the preservation of the cultural, historical, urban, artistic, architectonic and archaeological patrimony.

I catch my breath whenever I start reading about this subject. Amnesty is unacceptable. The DR cannot be forced to absorb all these foreigners - because 99% are Haitian does not make them special.

I don't worry TOO much though. If these corrupt politicians want to keep their lucrative posts, they cannot afford legalize any illegals. That would be the "drop that overflows the cup" and thats when the people will really rise up.

Build a wall.

Whoever isn't contracted for work, kick em out.

First of all, there shouldn't be such thing as "Dominican Nationality". That nationality existed only when the Island of Santo Domingo belonged to Spain or France. Once the island was shared by two independent countries, "Dominican" became a regional identity for the people of those two countries since 1844 (although, one of them, Haiti, has never recognized the name of the island as Santo Domingo), when Dominican-Spaniards declared their independence and renamed the island Santo Domingo (although, one of them, Haiti, has never recognized it on her constitution), The Dominican Republic is not the name of the country, but the denomination of the State. Quisqueya is the name chosen later by the Trinitarians and Restorers. We're writing the OAS regarding this mess. It is confusing that the island bears three different names, because Haiti doesn't give up her pride and hidden intentions. Let's get use to call ourselves Quisqueyans, until legally entered, later, discuss other issues.

Santana33:

EXCELLENT! specially with the 99%, Haitians want to use Dominican Republic as their dumpster
and We can't take anymore specially with Canada and United States having 20 times our space
and not accepting any large number of Haitians entering illegaly to their nations.

For the 2 Haitians that posted their opinions after you they are defending their tiresome agenda and want to integrate the 2 countries in 1 since at the end We lose and They win. Haven't see any
equation/formula yet that haitians can bring to the table as a winning token other than
misery, diseases, poverty and else.

Their old ending bragging about being the first black republic is BS since We are living in the
21 st century and what it counts is economy, business, progress, civilization not what anybody
used to be 200 years ago which is dellusional, non-practical and retarded.
