SANTO DOMINGO.- The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the 10 year prison sentence and RD$2 million fine against the ex Progreso bank president Pedro Castillo, convicted of defrauding the entity out of RD$14.0 billion.
The high Court struck down Castillo’s appeal of the sentence, citing article 426 of the Penal Procedural Code which limits its power to overturn convictions only on constitutional or human rights issues.
The resolution confirms the civil conviction against Castillo, including payment of damages of RD$5.14 billion to the bank Progreso; RD$6.9 billion for the Progreso shareholders, and RD$233 million to affiliated companies.
The National District Appellate Court’s 1st Penal Chamber upheld the conviction against Castillo on August 7.

Damn... I was going with the 100 year sentence.
My bet is, since the owners of Progreso are also owners of a good chunk of the country, their influence should keep him behind bars, unlike Vivian who only gave the shaft to small fry depositors.
