SANTO DOMINGO. - Relatives of the youngster Eduardo Antonio Baldera, kidnapped September 18 in Nagua (north), affirmed Tuesday that there are more people involved in the crime, and that they only have 2 million pesos, while the kidnappers demand 5 million. “We’re convinced other people are involved, aside from the seven which the National Police have arrested and the fugitive identified.”

In a press conference Human rights activist Manuel Maria Mercedes offered his support to Baldera’s family, while his father Francisco affirmed he has yet to hear his son’s voice, and doesn’t know if he’s alive or dead. “When the kidnappers called they said we have your son and we want 5 million dollars and later called again and said it was 5 million pesos, but I didn’t hear my son’s voice, if he’s alive or dead.”

He said the kidnappers were after several people to kidnap, but his son Eduardo Antonio was apparently the easiest one to find.

Meanshile Police chief Rafael Guzman affirmed that “the kidnapping is under control," but didn’t provide details.

I'm always hesitant to say that DR is on its way to be like Mexico and Colombia in terms of crimes. But this case is very scary. If criminals decided to go into the kidnapping business then the people in DR are in trouble. Mano Dura con esta gente! When caught bring them to el malecon in Santo Domingo and invite all the surrounding communites then proceed by hanging them on national TV.

I don't know if I was a criminal that might have some type of influence on me.

It is far worse in the Philippines where there are hundreds of gated communities, in Manila in particular ,and where armed men go with the children in their cars to and from school. What does it mean ,,the kidnapping is under control,,...?? luckily this appears to be an isolated case as I have only read of two others recently,

RIGHT? why worry what happens in other countries?.. worry about our own back yard. also just because it happens in other places this does not make it any better for the dr.

"It is far worse in the Philippines"

So because it is allegedly far worse somewhere else it means its great here: that is the new Metrolandia logic according to Ricky Romana , LIE-onel Fernandez and their beloved PLD!

If we started punishing criminals and corrupt officials by hanging them in the public square we could fix a lot of our problems.

The Government should consider this the biggest national threat to economic and social stability and should apply all of its police and military resources in a show of force for the safe return and capture of the criminals just to show the criminal elements that they take this more seriously that they think. This crime is a cancer that will shut down tourism faster than the devastation of any hurricane. It is already bad enough that hotel staff tell you not to leave alone and look like prisons. I won't go to Mexico just for this reason. I felt the threat once there and won't go back. I know of 2 failed cases of kidnapping of foreigners in the DR that failed and got no media attention because it was hushed and that is 2 too many. The police were complicit in one of the 2 cases and could be in others if not kept in check by the severity of the punishment and focus of the investigation. They should pay police a living wage and watch their every move, bank account and debt.

synapse,

You’re assuming we have government and honorable military; the reason we these situations is because we don't have a civilized society but rather a cesspool that breeds this lawlessness and corruption.

It all begins with no commitment to education and from there is the slippery slope into dysfunction and criminal anarchy!

Ah, but the under utilized, useless METRO was the priority!
