Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez returned to the country Wednesday on a flight from Spain, after participating in Tripoli, Libya, in the Special African Union Summit, invited by that nation’s leader Muammar Kadaffi and where he met with officials to discuss the possible construction of an oil refinery in the northwest coast town Manzanillo.

Fernandez arrived in Las Americas International Airport at 4:55 p.m. on board Iberia flight 6500, accompanied by Press director Rafael Núñez, Minister at large Miguel Mejia, among other officials.

I'm Dominican. I'm a Dominican Republic supporter. As far as politcicians, I don't support ANY ONE of them; wish they would ALL be tried and those that are found to be honest and hard working, double their pay and announce them as role models for the citizenry. Those that are found to be corrupt, (97%?) sentence them to the maximum to pay for their crimes and deter the future politicians from committing the same atrocitioes these criminals commit with impunity.

Kadaffi:
His sun made brutal attacks against his servants in Geneva, Switzerland.
His father is now attacking Switzerland because his sun was arrested.
He keeps Swiss business People as hostages despite the fact that the Swiss president
visited him and the immediate release was promised.
Kadaffi will speak at the UNO in New York this week and will demand the UNO to split Switzerland and distribute the country among Germany, Italy & France. He mentioned in a speech “If I would have nuclear bombs I would destroy Switzerland.
He also applauded his “Lockerby” bomber when he was returned to Libya last week, released from a Scottish prison as a humanity action!!!
What has Leonel top do with this crock!!!
An underdeveloped country needs the help of the developed countries and not the help of crazy “guys’ like Chavez and worse: Kadaffi.
Show me with whom you go and I will tell you who you are….
Priorities: Electricity, Infrastructure, Crime and Migration! Then we can start to drea

what a bunch of sorry and angry people.
young and viril presidents drive them nuts.
they imagine Fernandez and Obama still having sex and this is not their idea of a president. A president should gather in the night with a pack of sickos ploting to attack countries that do not pose any threat to their own anything like Genada and Irak
fredcdobbs reminds me of rush' limp 'baugh and the nay folks of fox news.
see what can happen to you when you do not get laid y cuando se acumula la leche.
It irritates you and make you iritate people

The comments here are comical. Sometimes I find myself drawn in and believing that Leonel will take out his horns and tail and declare himself the anti-christ with some of these comments. I mean the guy has his faults everyone knows this. However, the logic that some display here is sometimes more fitted to be on a site that has cartoons and not a news site. First, Leonel as president has the right to travel in style and to spend government resources accordingly because he was granted that right by the people who voted by majority. Unless all of the voters really want him to meet Gadaffi in a commercial flight from AA with the chickens and goats while he stays in the back to save money for the country? Better yet, why doesn't Leonel buy chacabanas and shorts and save money on suits. Maybe ride a bicycle to work because after all he's only a president. Nothing really important. He doesn't really have to impress anyone he can simply make deals by looking like a squandrel.

Another point, and I have mentioned this before and as fredcdobbs and rsosua were alluding to, is that the country is better off today than it was 5 years ago or 10 years ago. Yes pepito from la vega is still selling pastelitos in the corner with only 10 pesos for the week is a problem. Everyone knows that Leonel Fernandez lacks social investments such as educating the population and providing significant health care and resources for the people. However, what some have to understand is that every serious politician has a vision of what they can accomplish and can't. The DR is not the US. There is simply not a trillion dollars for LF to do as he pleases and just throw a few billion here to the people and a few billion to the pigs and cows. What i see as LF's vision is that he is bringing in more Direct foreign investments than any other president in DR's history. FOREIGN INVESTMENTS=PROSPERITY. look at any developed country and see how they did it. Definitely not alone.

it comes with the territory for a politician to take heat for things that go wrong. LF should be taking heat from the people for poor practices at home. However, his vision is long term. Remember today because if everything goes according to what it seems or as it should, then the real progress is being made in infrastructure & takes years for anyone to notice real change. LF will be long gone from politics before the DR can see any real progress from the deals he brokered today. Pepito from la vega's situation isnt going to change tomorrow and the cops aren't going to stop being corrupt tomorrow but what little crap he is doing today will be significant tomorrow. Leonel's biggest fault is his relaxed demeanor with crime and corruption. That is what should be complained about. I don't know the guy but I believe that corruption is way past him and way beyond what he can do if you want it to stop immediately. Only a revolution will stop that instantly and that ain't happening.

dominica,

my sentiments exactly.
Very well said.

but I must say that most leonel supporters here agree with what your saying but it is human nature to point out faults, whats done here is called sensationalism. I guess we dominicans love drama. none the less what you write is correct. But you must admit that the dialogues and sometimes monologues are interesting.

Yet for an outsider reading these posts, it could seem as if LF is the reincarnation of the devil.

What the heck did GC & Vacanos do this time? They have dreaded triangle next to their names!

While I don't always agree with their comments, I would hate to see either one of them go.

DT monitor, please give these two a break....they are great contributors and help stories evolve.

FredC's clear jaundiced eye is always a good catalyst for any story. He would be clearly missed if booted out.

Vacanos brings unique conservative views that are necessary for balance in forum. Please give him break as well.

Thank you for your consideration.

I am trying to select a well written paragraph that conveys an opinion whether or not i agree with it.I really can not find ityet.
When you do not have the grammatical tools and resources to post an opinion relevant to an article why do you make a fool of yourselves and habla mierda como un tonto.
it is one thing to be ignorant and have an intellectual deficit but, this is another thing to flaunt it .

Those of you who usually brag about the economical boom taking place in the DR and are quick to insult Haitians are also the ones criticizing Fernandez at every corner
It is like the economical boom happens spontaneously and no one is to be credited for it.
If you feel that someone is to be credited for the economical boom that myself I have witnessed, then who ?
If not Leonel Fernandez, then who?

In many places in the DR - near streams etc. the DR could benefit by widespread adoption.

I am opening a bank account for contributions and the first plenary conference could take place real soon.

I still think that Leonel Fernandez is one of the best leaders the DR has had in at least the last 50 years, but I also think that he's hanging with the wrong crowd, that he's too soft as a leader, that sometimes he doesn't even know wtf he's doing, etc. Some people think I'm contradicting myself, but I don't see things in black and white. Also, I believe that the DR could have a leader A LOT better than Leonel Fernandez. I don't vote for political parties, which means a vote for Leonel Fernandez isn't necessarily a vote for the PLD or Juan Bosch's ideals. People in my opinion are learning how to vote, that's why they went with LF. But I think we can do much better.

I don't have a problem with our president traveling, I think that's a good thing, he should have his own plane actually and not travel in commercial flights as he does. It's a good thing that he seeks investments for the DR in other countries, but when he hangs out with dictators, some of them against privately owned businesses, it could actually scare off potential investors. Investors won't come if they feel that their investments won't be secured.

Also, don't ever expect a president to do everything well all by himself. He/she also needs a great team. Again, some might think I'm contradicting myself, but LF was still the best choice with a real chance of winning the elections.

Trujillo, What President anywhere is not considered a dictator? I learned long ago not to believe anything the mainstream media says but quite the opposite as reported. I support LF and feel he is networking in a positive way by reaching out directly to far away sovereign nations in search of support for la R.D. in various good ways we do not always know of. He appears to be a good diplomat and social networker while also understanding the importance of diversification out of the western hemisphere.
