SANTO DOMINGO.- Hundreds of women, youngsters, union leaders, academic institutions, professional and barrio associations in front of Congress yesterday demanded the amendment of article 30 of the Constitutional Reform, which stipulates the right to life from conception to the death.
The protesters set off from the street Alma Mater, at the State University UASD and concluded in the esplanade of Congress, to demand that the legislators who are still undecided, to preserve the rights of the citizenship in the Constitution.
Dozens of police agents in full riot gear cordoned off the entrances to the building, and there were no reports of clashes.

I believe that a human being has the right to life but in an environment where he/she is wanted, protected, provided for (until college age) and loved.
That is not the case for many people. I respect that. The worst thing is to have a child in the middle of a situation that is not desirable. Public assistance (which exist in DR) does not and should not be the dumping ground for parents that will not provide, care, love and protect their child.
Also, have you seen how these ignorant women who hear cliques and follow these like a true religion due to ignorance "on how to get rid of their unborn"
ex: throw yourself down a staircase, drink a bottle of aspirin, clean with clorox all day and scrub away that should it, go to the witch doctor he has a bottle that should do the trick, get someone to use a wire hanger and let them pull the child out,
Lets not forget the clandestine so called doctors that perform these horrific procedures that may make women steril. Horrible..

I am 100% for women's right to choice. We are not in the middle ages any more. Furthermore this debate should not be a constitutional issue.

I hate elective abortions because it demonstrates a fundamental injustice in the world; that a lack of education which is at the base of this, forces women into circumstances where they are used and abused.
If women and men had basic educational opportunities the incidence of unwanted pregnancies would dramatically go down. However educating the masses is very dangerous to the powers that be, because they would lose their domain of the “untutored mob.”
So I support a women’s right to choice although I would strongly counsel them to avoid getting pregnant until they are able to provide for their child a better life than they have had. This counseling must be done with respect for her decision and should not be based on guilt trips, fear, intimidation, and personal degradation or ostracizing in any form.
We will never move forward in DR in any arena, social, economic or political until we have a true educational revolution.

From an idealistic point of view, yours is the "perfect world" view. Banning elective abortions just discriminates against the poor women that can not afford one in the first place, as the well to do always find a way.
Overpopulation grows and burdens the food supply of our already stressed to the max planet, and causes hunger, despair, misery and shortened life spans.
The mostly religious fundamentalist stand against contraception, and the right of women to choose, is not only outdated but as cruel as the inquisition at their prime, in it's denial of women's rights, claiming dogma and out of sync superstitious beliefs.

I agree totally on that last one.
Yet I still would like to see money put into the system for education, as Josean says.
CIA World FactBook
Education expenditures:
3.6% of GDP (2006)
country comparison to the world: 126 out of 182.
Josean and I may not agree on many things but on education spending I am all in.

Professor,
I did not say or intended to imply banning anything! I was merely saying that any elective abortions are tragic and should be avoided at all cost. And to avoid them we must educate people as to the consequences of their actions and give them real opportunities to make better decisions and choices.
I would never deny a woman her right to choice and frankly us men should support our women not control and manipulate them.
And yes I plead guilty to being an idealist and wanting a perfect world, if not then there is no reason to live in my humble opinion!

MRios, I would never label you out of your mind. Whenever you see adults not wanting children is because they cannot handle and are not willing to handle growing up and lets face it facing facts.
The fact that we age, the fact that once you have a child, you can't think of me you have to think of "the child".
The great part about being a parent as I see thru the eyes of my sister and bother is the joy and happiness a child brings to your life, the fact that you will learn things again. How the genes play such a factor in this new person that comes to your life. Trust me I am baffled at how my niece and nephew have so many of my habits without either one of us knowing. Its a wonderful experience.
But again, just because it is my experience, I know that others aren't as blessed. Other people's situations are not mine.
MRios, its sad how morals and standards have gone down the hill. I know, people tell I must come from the 1800's.

You see we do agree on a lot of Human issues. I can tell you speak from the Heart, don't let NOBODY change that ever. Sorry if you misunderstood me. When I speak on this type of issue I also speak from the Heart, as a Father of 4 I can honestly say because of it it made me a better Human, and after my Wife's all 4 C-sections which I was present was a Beautiful experience, since then I look at LIFE a whole lot different.
I'll repeat the DR needs Real MEN not studs. Children are a product of LOVE not some shake the gollies 15 min. past time. Men need to respect Woman period.
I'LL REPEAT....
After All MEN have Mother's, Grandmothers, Wife's, Daughters, Sister's, Aunts and Girlfriends.
Imagine how would they feel if Mr. Stud came by to make a play, Woman are not Sex Toys.

the above deceases just mentioned, I differ on that. Most STD's and HIV/AIDS are passed threw Body Fluids such as Saliva, Blood, Tears, Sweat, Urine and other Sexual Fluids.
Just ask a Male Stud if He knew His next Partner had a STD or was HIV/AIDS active will He still Fornicate, I would think not and hope not.
The idea of passing it on to His Love one or Wife.
We have a long way to go, Man living by His own rules and side stepping God that's the real Problem.
I'm glad I'm Happily Married and have been for over 21 + years and counting.

MRIOS, thanks so much for your words.
Pro-choice means we give them the option to find a professional licensed to do the procedure.
You are correct, STDs can be contracted easily. Unfortunately, some people take more time deciding what to buy than who they sleep with. : (
Moral values are taught in the home. Our parents are the ones who teach us thru behavior.
God's word teaches us what happens when we break the rules and how he is there to console and guide us.
Again, we are the blessed ones. Others may not have the opportunity to experience the blessings from God.
Again, thanks for your words.
I am going in to work tomorrow which is nearby. I lost a friend from Church, and a friend from childhood. God will help me make the best of it.
Thanks so much for your prayers.
