Santo Domingo.– Ruling PLD party deputy Alfonso Crisóstomo vowed to submit next Wednesday a bill to amend the Free Access to Information Law because in his view investigative journalists use it for reasons other than it was created.

Crisóstomo, who admitted that his father and a brother are in Congress’ payroll, said the information must be categorized because it’s being used to do harm. He said it’s not about a limit to freedom of speech, rather discretion with official information.

“Public opinion should  know that I have my father in the payroll and nobody is going to remove that old man who eats from his son, not even Valentin will remove him,” said the Puerto Plata province (north) lawmaker in reference to Chamber of Deputies president Julio Cesar Valentin.

He also defended his brother’s presence in the payroll, who works as his driver in political activities in his province, alleging that his relative also campaigned.

Insisting that he’ll seek to change the Law, Crisóstomo argued that the legislation is being used not only by journalists, but by politicians, who when competing with their rivals reveal the information to voters in order to jeopardize them.

Fire this PoS. He is what is SO wrong with the DR. Education of an eleven year old with less foresight as a gnat.

I want more transparency to know;

1. Job description
2. How many days they work
3. What perks they have
4. How much they get paid in comparison to other in that same type of position.

If this moron's brother is his driver and makes more than $10,000 RD a month then it is bunch of crap.

What does the average bus driver make a month? They do a hell of a lot more driving.

first, there seems to be some valid points to both sides of this argument. Public opinion is a tool that can be used for good and bad... The media itself is a powerful weapon that can be misused as it is sometimes. Now, the problem is that what kind of legislation would properly address this issue without encroaching on the people's right to liberty? The legislator in this article, if what he says is true, seems to be making a valid point of employing a relative for honest means. Hiring his brother as a driver (of course if it falls within normal payroll guidelines) seems to be fair if he is conducting a rightful service. The fact is that nepotism refers more to an abuse of power in the way that you give a brother a position of power without him deserving it. Giving your mother a million dollar salary when she stays at home all day now that is nepotism. Employing a relative for honest means (if they merit the job) doesn't seem unethical. A driver is a driver regardless.

I can only laugh at the statements made by this goverment official. My 6 year old can come up with a better argument defending a point of view. Does this guy even hold bachelor degree? Actually, at this point I would accept a high school diploma. They really need to remove these scums from public office.

Part II

The Monday TV update on the senators' practice of employing their relatives also revealed the frequent practice of issuing checks in the names of people who were not aware of the payments being made. These checks are then cashed by others. On the show, it was revealed that while nepotism is not a penal offense, forging the endorsement of a check is.
Ortega has made a series of reports on wasteful government spending.

Extra... Extra... This just in

Senate fires family members
Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez announced the dismissal of 23 workers who are related to senators, in response to an investigative report by TV journalist Alicia Ortega.
Pared announced that dismissals of family members on the public payroll would continue. The move to fire these family members was made after it was revealed that many senators had been using public funds to employ their relatives in non-essential positions or were receiving money without doing anything in return. Nepotism is common in branches of government in the DR.

dominica,

Wrong !

nepotism
A noun
1 nepotism

favoritism shown to relatives or close friends by those in power (as by giving them jobs)

http://www.wordreference.com/definition/nepotism

It has nothing to do with if they are qualified, are doing the job, need the job, are drivers or CPAs or are the last Coca-Cola in the desert, period.

The perception is wrong and the appearance of impropriety is bad enough.

the press is the 4th power in any free society and indeed a very powerful tool that can be used for good or evil, nevertheless restricting access to information on matters that pertain to the public is only used to abuse power and promote even more corruption and wrong doing.

and they keep coming:

Developments in Narcizaso case

Yesterday the judge in charge of investigating the 1994 disappearance and presumed murder of university law professor Narciso González ("Narcisazo") halted interrogations of military officials and asked that several others be blocked from leaving the country. Narcizaso, a vocal critic of then-President Balaguer, was rumored to have been picked up by agents of the Dominican Air Force’s (FAD) A-2 Intelligence group just before his disappearance, so the investigation has focused on FAD officials past and present. Interrogations were halted when several key men called for questioning did not appear. Judge Eduardo Sánchez Ortíz asked the nation’s Attorney-General to block three men from leaving the DR: Adelcio Antonio Martínez, Luis Manuel Tejeda Fernández and a man identified only as "Pérez Vólquez."

Since the start of the investigation the judge has sought and won similar blocks on numerous men, most of them past or current FAD members.
Meanwhile the lawyer representing the professor’s family announced yesterday that he is seeking official protection after receiving a number of death threats by telephone.

God Bless, el pais de las maravillas. Where else in the world (except a few African nations and Banana Republics) can a man of this caliber find employment? This is why the DR is in the great shape it finds itself.. The funny thing is, he commands respect of others. It truely is, a thing of beauty. Being so stupid, and really not knowing it.

There's that song from that boy Akon, Senegalese-American. It's called "I'm so paid", and it's about a triple-sting operation.

Akon is short for "a convict". and he developed his musical talent while in jail for car-jacking. I like the guy as an artist. He is a very big star.

I think "I'm so paid" should become DR's next national anthem because:

1. The expression of African "do whatever you have to do" survival culture;
2. It's in English, and the kids love the song, so they might remember some of the words;
3. It so reflects the mentality of the political class,
4. It's so less boring than "Quisqueyanos valientes"

Let's all stop for a moment; in this land of amnesia and impunity, "I'm so paid" should be on the darn flag and please don't get me wrong. If amnesia and impunity were constitutionally guaranteed, even the santissimus State of Vatican would rock to the rhythm of "I'm so paid".

Let's get real!

These Dominican buffoons were born with the entitlement gene and it is impossible to breed it out of them.

LF, "Zero Tolerance", and fire this guy for even suggesting that 'transparency' in a public position is bad. The PUBLIC pays his salary and according to him, his family.

The only thing Dominicans can be transparent about is their CORRUPTION, they wear it as a badge of macho honor.

We should create a civil movement fund in DR, funded by any individual who want a better country.
Wtih that money pay a group of laywers to take to court all of this gatos and not sit and wait for the authority to do nothing. Este es el colmo de la burla a un pueblo abusado por estos pendejos que se dicen representantes de las mayorias. The money and all the exonerations this diputados get should be given to the judges of the Dominican Justice System, so they are more motivated to impart fair justice in a fair way. A country without justice is a country that would never be able to move foward.
