Arturo Villanueva with two Asonahores executives in a recent press conference.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The country’s hoteliers grouped in Asonahores today accused the local representatives of the United Nations Program for Development (UNPD) of being "ecoterrorists" and of forming a group of "bureaucrats" which has never formulated a development project for the country, in the wake of the release of a document which describes the country’s tourism model “highly unsustainable."
The document, published last weekend after an Inter-ministerial Dialogue on Climatic Change, criticizes the sector’s lack of diversity, its hunger for profit and a culture of exploitation and mismanagement of Dominican Republic’s natural resources, and unleashed a wave of criticism as well as support of the UNPD.
On Friday Asonahores executive vice president Arturo Villanueva said the UNPD has always ha criticized the country’s tourism development, despite having served as the model for México and Cuba.
“That criticism doesn’t worry us. The UNPD is a un group of ecoterrorists which represent the current of father Hartley in the Dominican Republic,” he said referring to the controversial Catholic priest Christopher Hartley, who’s allegedly behind an international campaign against the country’s sugar industry.
Today the document also prompted the Dominican Government to call its realease a "mistake," since the text doesn’t includes neither the National Council for Climatic Change nor the Environment Ministry’s position on the tourism industry.
However National Council on Climatic Change vice president Omar Ramirez today said the PNUD "in no way participated in the deliberations nor in the discussions" and its role was solely as "facilitator" and "sponsor" of the process.
Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia also labeled the information from the forum as “malicious and perverse" and affirmed it seeks to "jeopardize" the investment climate of the Caribbean nation’s main source of income.
Although the document released to the media is titled "Conclusions of the Inter-ministerial Dialogue on Climactic Change," Ramirez affirms it’s a "draft."
“The error was that document did not have to happen to the press and was an error the organizers: the Environment Ministry and the National Council (for Climatic Change). We assume ours responsibility," Ramirez said in a press conference.
He said the document’s content wasn’t submitted to the plenary of the inter-ministerial dialogue and, therefore, shouldn’t been released.
The dialogue was held in Santo Domingo from September 2 to 4 with the participation of 175 representatives of regional governments and parliaments, Civil Defense, banking, non-government organizations, industries associations, among others.
As to Asonahores’ absence from the dialogue, Ramirez admitted "a failure in invitations," but affirmed that the Environment ministry and the Council will meet with their representatives and those of the Tourism Ministry next week.
Tourism is the Dominican economy’s most important industry, which accounts for as much as nine percent of tax revenues, and is the top currency generator, followed by remittances and the free zone companies.
Haydee Kuret weighs in
Asonahores president Haydée Kuret de Rainieri also joined the fray, calling the PNUD statement on the tourism model “very unfortunate” and of little benefit for the country’s most dynamic sector.
Interviewed by the Web site caribepreferente.com, the business leader said the UNPD “crossed the lines of respect by accusing in an offensive manner the businesspersons of a hunger for profit and irresponsibility in development.”

If they are "eco-terrorists", then you are "eco-swine", because the moment you leave the All-Inclusive microcosm it is a pig stye.
The rivers are polluted with animal and human waste which runs into the ocean, killing the coral.
Most other areas are polluted with plastic garbage.
Admit it, you're pigs and have NO eco conscious, just rape the land and steal the money.

Ah but building a cement plant in an ecologically sensitive area within some of the most important aquifers in the country is not environmental terrorisms by the PLD and Lie-onel Fernandez.
What self serving opportunistic hypocrites this PLD mafia is!

Not so fast GM, while we appreciate your outsider's input, there are many of us who talk the talk and walk the walk on the environment. We admit that the country is no more than a pig farm in many ways, but face it... isn't it a compelling challenge?

Now the UN is a ecoterrorist group, but a few months ago Leonel asked them for help with the cement plant. Well how convinient that now that the truth is out about tourism development, the UN has no credibility to these fine business men. The truth is the truth, our tourism development SUCKS and only benefits a few. I have many friends working in this fine field that pretty much just make ends meet while living like prisoners. This needs to change and fast.

As a frequent traveler, I will say that the country's tourism industry is not as bad as some here portray it, but it is definitely unsustainable in the long run. Rather than assisting in fixing the electrical problem and building up, hoteliers continue to scrape up every piece of beachfront and build out ,causing a lot of antagonism in surrounding local communities (i.e.Miches). Add to this the fact that their construction boom has been a major factor in the growth of the illegal immigrant community in DR and at times it seems they create more problems than they solve. Last but not least, there's a real lack of an authentic Dominican experience in a lot of these places, they simply cater to the tourist depending on the country they're from. When prices go up, there's not much reason for the tourist to pick DR over places like Costa Rica.

gmiller261 Go ahead and support the UN. It is certainly your right to your opinion. Facts are facts. The UN is headed by the US Government who has NO credibility whatsoever. These thugs are obviously out to destroy every nation they can get their filthy hands on in all ways possible. They are out to take down the world in the name of the New World Order. I am certainly glad you are happy with the way things are going inside your fascist country. Enjoy because you will be the last one to see or acknowledge the truth or the light of day with regard to many world issues. You may never see. You may well be one of their victims. The saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Whoa, My opinion of the UN is that they are a bunch of retards that could not get a real job. They should have been disbanded 20 years ago.
That does not change the fact that the DR is a mess from any angle. Sajomero, is correct, the tourist industry owned by the Spaniards is reprehensible. Workers are more like indentured servants than workers. They ship the money out of the country, do No other work except for their little AI world.
This is why it is “highly unsustainable."

Oh, I left out the worst aspect of making the DR a tourist/expat destination for the 40 odd million possible US retirees (laid off middle class). It is a pig sty.
NO middle class 'family' wants to see garbage at every corner. Their first impression is that the country is unsafe. That only drug addicts, prostitutes and lazy SOBs would treat a beautiful place like that.
And do not get me started on the bars on every window of a house, WTF is with that?

As one of those middle class working retirees who has lived here for the past 15 years, do us all a favor and either stay in the AI or even better stay home.
You ever been to Detriot? Or the 9th ward in New Orleans. They need the bars on the windows more than we do here. Lots of the ones here are for decoration, and style. We don't have drive by's, you can walk lots of areas in the capital at 2 in the morning.
