Santo Domingo. - A gang of hired killers which included a Dominican Air Force First Lieutenant and a son of a ruling party deputy, among others, was busted last night during a sweep.

The gang, which operated out of the capital’s barrio Los Pinos de Guachupita, is linked to the execution style murder of 12 people, and injuring seven others in different barrios.

Investigators say the gang is linked to the murder of five men 29 kilometers north of the city on  the Duarte highway and operates in coordination with a La Victoria prison inmate named Denny.

Seized from Miguel Alfonseca Soto, known as Junior or El Jefe and son of ruling PLD party deputy from Cotuí, were 27 cell phones, a Glock 40 pistol with 30 capsules and dust presumably cocaine.

The son of PLD legislator Gladis Mercedes Soto Iturrino is also linked to the drug shipment detected hidden in boxes of the tuber yautía, which was set to be transported aboard the Ferry from Santo Domingo to Puerto Rico.

Police chief Rafael Guzmán said there are still seven fugitives in the case of the murders on the Duarte highway and that the crime is drug-related.

The bodies of Juan Nicaury Díaz Serrano, 32; Elvin Noel Díaz Domínguez, 37; Ramón Paulino Valdez, 32, and Carlos Manuel Vicente Rivas, 33 were found by police and that of a fifth man, as yet unidentified.

The detainees are Delvi Martínez Moreta, Enyer Mejía Mañón (Alex), Rafael Pimentel Beltré Suazo (Andy), Daniel de los Santos Gutiérrez (Lilo), Carlos Miguel Zabala (Morao) and the first lieutenant Carlos Hernández Monte de Oca.

Also part of the group are Víctor Fernández (Picú), arrested after a shootout in which Wandy Alfonso López Mora (Guandulón) and a man identified only as Miguelón were killed.

Wonderful positive news from the Police ,but I note not from Vincho, even though this was drug related . I have never been in favour of capital punishment but I think , that in cases such as this ,the death sentence would be warranted ..multiple murderers have no place in a prison or in society ..

Don't worry. Most of them will never see a prison for more than the blink of an eye.

If we are going to wage a war on drugs, let it be a war.

Deploy military personel in strategic points all over the territory (parks, street corners, schoolyards, colmadones etc etc). Arrest and jail the users as POW. Shoot the pushers on sight as the enemy.

Death penalty for dealers, wholesalers, import/exporters. Malaysian model.

Otherwise, keep on with the shows, the smokescreens, the commissions and Vincho. Drug money has been good to this country, it has a positive influence on the GDP and it pays for the living of many, many people.

I beg to differ, Drug money has been good to some individuals, but the inflationary effect it has had on goods and services have been devastating to the embryonic middle class, the poor and the vast majority of Dominican consumers.

Not to mention the social cost of addiction, crime and the further corrupting of government and its “institutions!”

I prefer the Malaysian system rather than tolerance to multiple murderers and drug dealers ,,I think in Malaysia there is a minimum amount of drugs before the death sentence is carried out.

We should impose the death penalty and kill them with an overdose of the same drugs they were pushing. Cost effective also...

cibaeño, you are so right! The police could have done society a favor and just put one to the back of each head and just roll them down a lagoon. Pretty sure no one would have missed them.

Police chief condemns killers' release

National Police Chief Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin has condemned the decision to release 8 criminals, including accused mastermind Miguel Alfonseca Soto, the son of a PLD deputy, who were implicated in 12 murders. The men were released by Santo Domingo province Third Chamber of Instruction judge Rene del Rosario, who was said to have thrown away the hard investigative work done by the Police. The police commander reminded reporters that police investigators had risked their lives to disband the gang that was dedicated to carrying out hired killings in the country. Guzman Fermin told reporters, "I respect the decision of the judges, headed by Jorge Subero Isa, but I condemn the decision of this substitute judge who has thrown everything away, who should have thought of the families of the 5 young men who were murdered".

He made this statement as he left Sunday Mass at Police Headquarters. He said there were no words to describe what the Police were thinking when they see a judge releasing a criminal they have been tracking for 3 months. The released detainees had been accused of the murders of 4 people whose bodies were found at Km29 of the Duarte Highway.
