According to US embassy sources, damages in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere are "catastrophic".
The tsunami danger is minimal, and there is no historical evidence of tsunamis in the Caribbean except in the Atlantic ocean, and northern coast portion(DR1946).
This terrible event at the worst imaginable time for Haitians, hopefully should bring solidarity and international aid for the reconstruction of Haiti, and focus the attention of the whole world in Haiti's problems and predicament.

This is a very sad moment in the history of our region.
Would it be too much to ask to put our professed hatred aside and prey for the innocent lives which have been lost? I couldn't care less be they Cuban, PRican, Dominican, Jamaican, Brazilian, American, etc., etc. My heart cries for them the same, nevertheless.
It is an absolute shame that some have exhibited great callousness in this moment of great destruction, need, to use this sad story as platform/springboard to profess their hatred.
I am a compassionate Dominican who refuses to join in the fray and instead I eschew hatred and join my neighbors in prayer in their moment of need. This is not the time to argue or hate; it is the time to join together and extend our hand to our neighbor and help him out. This is simply the christian thing to do, and we shall be rewarded immeasurably for our good deed.
No, I am not Haitian.....I am just a compassionate human being with respect for my fellow man.

Well, according to the little news (written and video) I've got on msnbc, Port-au-Prince looks like a war torn zone. There is no communication at all whether it is land based or cellular. Well folks, we can say that we Haitians have received this one right on our chin. Will it put us down, I don't think so but, it will take a while before we can catch our breath and resume the fight.
I don't feel anger against the heartless hatemongers remarks here, but just some profound sadness in front of their barbarism. I've them in file and when the effect of this disaster will start to dimm out I'll be willing to chat with them. However, for the time now, I am in a mourning mood, and all my attention is focussed on my ill fated and battered homeland. News coming from Haiti are getting worse and worse, and there is talk about thousands of deaths.
Communications are down for the most part as well as cell phone service, we Dominicans should prepare for the worst and be the first ones to arrive on the scene to help, whether our help is "formally" requested or not. This time calls for Dominican solidarity and immediate help to Haitians in need, in any which way we can.
The US rescue services and military should be on the way there as we speak, again the situation demands immediate relief. The whole island is at a loss when a tragic event of this magnitude occurs, and ambulances, volunteers and medical help, power generators, water, blood, rescue equipment, medicines, temporary housing, food, is urgently needed to help alleviate the suffering and prevent the situation from magnifying and getting out of control, and maybe causing famine and plagues due to the disruption of communication channels, that will surely affect us as well.

I would dare say many thousands will have been lost. At this point all we can do is pray for both the lost and the living. The only thing that is lucky is this is a tropical country and a few nights under the stars will not kill.
We have three days before the survivors start becoming casualties if the relief supplies do not get in..
The injured may or may not make it depending on how ravaged the medical is.. COnsidering 60% of the buildings were considered unsafe with out the stress of earth quakes I dare say this is a lost cause.
I would expect many casualties will be medivaced out to the DR, the US, and GITMO for treatment.
This is on Scale with the Earth Quake in Pakistan a few years ago.

What a tragic event.
just when Hiaiti was showing signs of recovery and things were looking up for haitians, this powerful act of nature strikes, we need to set aside our differences for a moment and hope that our neighbors find the strength to rebuild and recover from this unfortunate tragedy.
Also is my opinion, that we Dominicans as a nation should demonstrate to all Haitians that throughout our historical ups and downs the Dominican Republic have always stood side by side with Haiti. I'm sure is going to be a tremendous amount of support coming from average dominicans that will not think twice before lending a helping hand to haitians everywhere.
Unfortunately i cannot say the same about my government because nobody knows what a f**ck they going to do since they stop representing the people long time ago.

Moreover, i was not aware that 1/5 of the Haitian population lived in the capital, so that is 2 million souls that were directly hit by this disaster.

Yes, its gone. Pray for the people of Haiti
This region is prone to both plate shifts (Carribean plate vs. the North American plate) where the (east-west running) fault line is just north of Hispanola to Puerto Rico.
This is just another reason why the Metro is a disaster waiting to happen when a quake strikes there and a subsequent Tsumami. With better strategic planning they could have saved millions not digging nor escavating tunnels but built all trains above ground or even elevated (i.e. Chicago) to create a national transit system to move both goods & people faster, cheaper & better.
In short the RD Gov & Haiti are beacon symbols of Gov corruption and mis-management.
I wonder how many drug stock piles were lost as they were held in cooling off points before being shipped across the RD border and then onto the USA via Puerto Rico?

Find a good organization to donate funds and supplies.
Two excellent organizations accepting donations for response to the Haiti quake are Oxfam America (
http://www.oxfamamerica.org/) and Partners in Health (
http://www.pih.org/). Both have staff on the ground and solid reputations.

I work for Save the Children, which has a significant presence in Haiti. Staff there and in the U.S. are working to mount a major response to the earthquake.

BASTA, just so you know, there was a quake in Santiago and Puerto Plata of mayor magnitude in 2003, followed by many replicas and even if there was damaged it was not as wide spread and what we are seeing in haiti today, certainly Haiti's was far more powerful but compared in perspective, Santiago's buildings sustained far less damage or no damage at all.
It is very stupid of you to assume technical information about construction and earthquakes, specially when you don't know what you're saying and have not technical or historical data to support you ill-founded allegations.

In Canada there is around 100.000 Haitians who are strongly concentrated in Quebec. When there is a tragedy in Haiti, Quebec always hastens to offer its monetary and humane assistance. Considering that in Canada you pays on three stages municipal, provincial and federal it s being normal that Canada supports the Haitian Diaspora because it s much vote for the election.
I wish my condolences at all the Haitians and I pray for you

I had just returned from Haiti this past Holidays and I am going back to Haiti soon via Dominican Republic to help if I am not called to be deployed there. I wanted to know if there will be others on here and on
http://www.EverythingHaitian.com who will be doing the same. People, allow me to advise you all... while we may have in mind to give out donations, but also be very careful and weary of scams. Please, any kind of donation or to which ever legit foundation you use is fine. Just make sure it is a legitimate foundation and not scams out to profit from the tragedy. Anything any of you can do at all is already greatly appreciated and kinds words also are very encouraging!!!
P.S: YeleHaiti is a great foundation which I donate $150 from my Army paycheck each month to because I have seen first hand and directly their work in Haiti.

I really feel the sincerity in the words you wrote.
You are my brother, my crazy brother, but my brother just the same!
I hope the whole world is embarrassed by the spotlight that has been place on Haiti due to this horrific event, especially the developed world! How can we as a COLLECTIVE HUMANITY allow fellow HUMAN BEINGS to live in such deplorable and infra-human conditions, like this tragedy has exposed to the entire world.
We (THE WORLD) should hang our heads down in shame that we have ignored the plight of our fellow brethren for so long. Maybe the tragedy will serves as wake call of embarrassment and Haiti finally rises from the ashes of its own corruption, this horrible event and the acquiescence of the world powers.
One thing I have always agreed with my fellow Dominican brothers (even the intolerant ones) that the burden of helping Haiti should never fall solely on the shoulders of the Dominican Republic.

It is easy to send money. But the people in Haiti lost everything. Money right now is only useful for the aid workers. The people need the basics of life.

Can someone on DominicanToday please create a list of resources asap?

To all....unfortunately in light of the devastation to our fellow Haitians Brothers and Sisters true evil is among us be super careful who you donate to. My advice is unless you don't know any origination with a GOOD reputation, your best bet is if you reside in the US make checks payable to the American Red Cross [no cash] and be sure to specify "The Haitian Quake Relief Fund" in care of the American Red Cross.
Also my understanding is there is total chaos in the streets at night due to a mass power outage and a logistical nightmare due to communications between airplanes and the control tower and damage to Haiti's POP Port. rumor:
Haitian Radio said a lot of people would be die a this time.
Heavy damages in Bourdon, Petion-Ville, Delma, Eglise Sacre-coeur, Contribution building, Hopital general, all collapsed, a hospital down, because of a lot of shaking of that particular earthquake. People are screaming all over. Help will be difficult because of night time.
Again this is RUMOR palais national has collapsed RUMOR AGAIN.
Finally, the quake was 7.0, this is the strongest since logs have been kept about quake, meaning that it was the strongest in the history of the island.
http://live.cnn.com/
Forget about the material things. How about human lives?
My uncle who lives in Florida is currently vacationing in his home in Petionville, and I have lots of family members there whom I'm unable to reach, as the lines are busy.
You wouldn't make such comment if it was any other poor country.
The collapse of the Haitian Presidential Palace confirmed by CNBC
Jesus was by Judas= That is Voodoo Shit and throw in allah
I tried calling my family in santiago, but no luck, all the lines are jammed. I have been able to get some e-mail via sat antenna that we have on the roof of the house. I do not know if you guys have seen those, but they look just as routers, but with two antennas attached to it.
At this moment the most important thing is to save as many as possible, this type of catastrophic events ruin solid economies, the more Haiti is affected, the more we will in the long run...We need to help as much as we can, also our help can get there sooner as we are in the same island...clock is ticking...people is dying.
Thank you.
No more vodoo then ! God is the lord ! no the devil
I wish Oupala would stop talking for Haitians in Haiti from Canada. If you are not in Haiti, but safe in Canada, how do you know if there is cause to worry or if the earthquake shake them or not, or what they do need or don't need and if they would survive this on top of the rest. How the death, that should be many, would survive? How the survivors, the ones that escaped with their lives, but possible lost everything, including relatives, would cope? Would you fly there today to comfort them, if only with 'real sympathy'
It may happen anywhere, we are lucky that did it did not strike closer to our territory, unfortunately our island is sitting on the caribbean plate that is moving between two huge tectonic plates north and south of us.
JR, we are a very hospitable humans, please do not taint our reputation on the world stage. You are really out of line here, please save it for another day, these people are hurting right now.
My only fear is that GOD will get upset at the crap that you are talking and send one our way.
You are one sick DOG, man, please stop the crap one minute and allow them to grieve their pain and destruction.
Finally, administrator, please remove all those posting that are making us look like bloodless barbarian, these comments do not represent our goodwill and sentiment. Please, o it for the good of all, there are foreigners looking at some of our people basically celebrating such disaster and implying that GOD did this in punishment for these poor nation.
JR, you are one sick DOG.
Martha, look at your FRIEND 92’s postings, you are such a hypocrite for not taking him on the carpet for his fowl language.
I thought you were all into good manners or is yours a morality of convenience?
Just few hours ago our president announced that Dominican Republic will be providing Haiti with aid and asked all latin american countries to do the same while your country this week kept the
poultry negative agenda while your people is dying and eating dirt cookies; sick dog will fit perfec
tly to your president for taking advantage of his own agenda while your people is starving. GROW UP LIKE A MAN AND A HUMAN BEING!!1
I MUST BE ABLE TO LOVE MY COUNTRY AND JUSTICE AS WELL.
These people do not deserve your crap at this moment shut your mouth and go show your lack of self-esteem by screaming at the wall.
I dare say the grunt work wil lbe done by DR military. They are here and ready. The relief supplies will be float and shippied and and sent accross. I fell this will happen due to the probable damage to the Airposts and Ocean terminals in Haiti. Now look for shortages in the DR for many items for the short term as it will get price gouged and smuggled over the border,
I don't feel anger against the heartless hatemongers remarks here, but just some profound sadness in front of their barbarism. I've them in file and when the effect of this disaster will start to dimm out I'll be willing to chat with them. However, for the time now, I am in a mourning mood, and all my attention is focussed on my ill fated and battered homeland. And I wish those who are enjoying our misfortune to never along their whole life be struck by such calamity, because they have no idea how it feels.
Internet is working but cellphone are kaput.
If I seem cold it is this is to tragic to deal with in any terms other that auto pilot. I am an expat living in the DR. I can not do more than what I am now.
To all Haitians:
"Stay strong through the night, to thine own self be true. never do change, and always remain you. for god made MORE"
JR, sadly, you are entitled to your opinion.
Many kudos to those of you showing compassion....you are great human beings and Dominicans.
I applaud our president's initiatives in offering whatever help we can extend to our neighbor, the Haitian nation. I have been as critical and negative as anyone here against LF, but this action is noble and commendable and worthy of applause. My view, strictly. Hope you will agree.
Thank you.
As we speak, the French are gearing up and heading toward Haiti as well as the U.S. As already noted the DR has responded the way would want them to respond, which is by showing our humanitarianism and hospitality that we are known for. Moreover, the entire island sits on this fault line and it can happen to either side any day, so we need to show our dedication to the human life more than ever and prove that we are not a people of hate, but a people of peace and charity.
I thank and salute the LF government for mobilizing all of our agencies and putting them to the services of the
This might be the big jolt (7.0) Haiti needed in order to force other countries to start helping them with, shelter, and whole new form of infrastructure.
If men can build the tallest Penthouse (4 oil families will live above the hotel until the oil runs out) in the middle of a fkn sand blizzard in Dubai...they can sure as easly come together and start a real MEGA PROJECT in Haiti.
By the way now is not the time to pick at old wounds and scabs. These people will be needing all the help available and for a long time to come. The kind of destruction we are seeing cannot be rebuilt overnight.

- The earthquake was not strong enough to produce a Tsunami
- The phenomenom occurred as a result of a transformed boundary (fritction between plates), and tsunamis normally are produced as a result of convergent boundaries activity.
It is a time for all human beings to unite.
But I do have to say that I'm not only ashamed, but a bit horrified at the lack of human compasion that some of my dominican compatriots are showing at this terrible time in the life of the Haitian people. I doubt that if the earthquake had struck downtown Santo Domingo that Haitians would take such unabashed pleasure in our misfortune.
Before we forget, the DR lies along the same fault line as Haiti, Puerto Rico and the southern part of Cuba. It could have been us.
This is not the time for nationalist chauvinism, but for solidarity with our fellow brothers and sisters on the other side of the border.
I stand with my compatriots tonight and everyone in our corner.
I hope tomorrow brings me satisfactory news as my Mother is less than 2 miles from the national palace.
