Santo Domingo.– President Leonel Fernandez decreed Friday and Saturday "Days of National Mourning" for the loss of thousands of human lives in
Haiti as a result of the 7.0 earthquake that struck the neighboring country.
According to the
Decree 29-10, "the Dominican people are profoundly
disturbed because of this great tragedy, and therefore it is considered
to be a moral obligation to demonstrate their sorrow and solidarity
with the Haitian people."
The decree orders
all flags to be flown at half mast at all government buildings at the
national, provincial and municipal levels. I addition, all
official activities of a festive nature are suspended.

What many outsiders dont realize is that many dominicans are married to hatians and families have intermix for generations. The hatian pain is not just hatian but an island pain, a national mourning period is appropriate for the hatians as well as the domincans suffering for their relatives in haiti.

Mr. Franco, your sensitivity to the pain of others is amazing. You may not share the pain of many dominicans but am sure there are plenty of them all around you in Brooklyn and elsewhere that are greatly affected and still wandering how their relatives are coping with this tragedy of this magnitude.
I am not dominican or hatian Myself and more than once have cried watching their pain and suffering on tv. and am willing to help in any way I can donating blood, clothes, money etc.

CarlosFranco - I must say you are consistent in spewing your insensitive, very ignorant views and it is your right to do so. Nevertheless, any person who does not care about the suffering of possibly millions of human beings in the face of a disaster such as this, is clearly lacking in humanity. I don't know who you are, except for what you post on this site. If I did know you, however, rest assured that it would be something that would shame me. Kick a man when he is down!! I hope you never have to face the pain that these poor unfortunates are facing today.

you are not a Dominican.
Dominicans as you can see by their behavior during the tragedy that has fell upon Haiti are decent people capable of expressing rare emotions like compassion and love
you belong to the " crocuta crocuta "species.
In african mythology and folklore you represent the symbol of immorality ,depravity, hate, intolereance.
I will not be surprised if you worship satan,

Listening to the news , looking at the photos and hearing some of the survivor's stories fill my eyes with tears! I'm not surprise we were the first one there to help out our neighbour when in need, is too bad others (a huge minority) are not sensitive to the human tragedy going on in Haiti right now!
That could of easily been DR, I'm still thanking God every night that is did not happen in our side of the Island! Under God we all are brothers and sisters, it is time to start acting like it!
To the Haitians on this site, I hope your families were not harm and that you have been able to locate them. Our hearts and prayes are with you and your love ones!

I feel pain and sadness seeing what happened in the neighboring nation of Haiti but I also felt the same pain when I saw the effects of Katrina or the Tsunami in Asia but though Carlos Franco may not be saying it with tact I don't feel any special attachment to Haiti than I would for any other human being .There is no special brotherhood with Haiti despite what rainman is saying other than the brotherhood of all man kind. Now Puerto Rico or Cuba and others are on a different level of brotherhood which is closer to family and it would be very different if it had been in one of those nations.I know that right now the priority is to Help Haiti but we cannot lose focus on the hard realities and an exaggerated love fest means nothing if when the dust clears the problems between us remain or even get worse. So let us focus on helping Haiti which is in everyones best interest and hopefully move forward from this disaster with a different relationship.

Hopefully the nations of the world will not just go in to Haiti put a band aid and run out leaving the burden again squarely on the shoulders of DR .I cannot believe the low profile France has in this whole thing given that they planted the seeds of the current disaster!

If an earthquake of that magnitude hits Santo Domingo it would be worse than in Port au Prince. population of three million plus, countless buildings of two or more stories, tunnels, metro, elevated pista... I hope the construction is more secure than that in Haiti but I've read more than a few stories about building collapsing in the DR without any outside event. Mejor un rancho en el campo.

Carlos Franco - better watch your words - because they have a way of coming back to haunt you as your lack of concern is dispicable and so are you. something will happen to you and your loved ones and no one will care. what the he.. is your anger problem. speak to a psychiatrist. And as I see from this site - YOU ARE AFRAID TO POST YOUR IGNORANCE AGAIN HERE. I say again, you had better be looking over both shoulders from now on - YOUR WORDS WILL GET YOU BACK! Your lack of humanity is simply overwhelming - like the republicans. Actually unless you were born in the United States - We do not need people like you here!

i am so proud of the dominican people for their show of support towards the haitian people, i have always believed that the hatred showed on this forum portrayed only a small minority of dominicans. it is so nice to see i was correct that the vast majority of dominicans care about others like any other nation would.

Carlos Franco you really need to check your heart, for your comments at this time are very inappropiate and hurtfull. First and foremost we belong to the HUMAN family regardless of where you are born. Im Dominican, but Ill be dammned to allow anyone to trash or belittle our neighbors in this time of tragedy. You must also remember that the same fault line tha runs through Puerto Principe runs right through most of our Southern region. In the North we have the Septentrional fault that runs the lenght of that same mountain chain. Santiago, La Vega, Bona, Puerto Plata are all at risk of an earthquake just like that one or worse. Obviuosly you don't know what happened to the original Santiago de Jacagua, La Vega Vieja or Pueblo Viejo in Azua that all disappeared after strong quakes.

whats all the hate on Franco? thats his opinion....if you're sensitive and think its not right then thats your point of view...there's no right or wrong when it comes to personal preferences.....democracy, freedom of speech, liberty, etc etc, blah blah...supports it..

junglemonkey - Of course it is Franco's right to his opinions as it is our right to ours. In a democracy even an ass (burro) is free to brae, but it doesn't change the fact that an ass is an ass.

One of the best qualities my fellow Dominicans and I have is our ability to be compassionate and kind to others, often putting others' needs before our very own. Thus, a person who do not display this characteristic is an imposter. Another thing, I just don't see how hundreds of Dominicans trucks and cars travelled bravely into Haiti to distribute food and water, and all these other nations' help is just sitting there because they are concerned about not having a distribution plan in place, who have more protection and troops. Dominican's first priority were the Haitian people.
Leonel has done a stupendous job!!

some people have little love for their own family and brothers, while they show more love for strangers and foreigners or people who they worship but are not. This is a common phenomenon. disdain for those close to you, and admiration for some imagined ideal. learn not to hate who you are, and to embrace the truth of history. sinceramentel LaVerdad!
