Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez Sunday night said he asked United Nations Secretary General Ban-ki Moon to integrate Dominican Army soldiers to the UN Haiti Stabilization Mission (Minustah), to join the aid effort in that country.

The Head of State made, interviewed by the journalists Geraldino González of Channel 5, and Gregorio Meratz, of Mexico Television, said the number of soldiers would comprise a battalion.

“We are requesting the authorization of a Dominican Army battalion of 1,300 troops to be integrated as members of Minustah, who won’t enter Haitian territory as members of the Dominican Army but rather as members of Minustah and facilitate the logistical support and the aid required even more,” Fernandez said.

this is a very generous offer and one that should not be discounted .....1300 Dominican soldiers with cultural familiarity and compassion can accomplish the work of many many hands and can be extremely effective in helping a situation that also impacts their own country men in many ways .....The key operative word here is Compassion for the suffering and for their neighbor

Give the rest of the island to the greedy Dominicans since they want the whole island ( I think it's good idea too so I ain't hating). France should partition a third of French Guiana and it give to the Haitans as free state. Any reconstruction monies should go towards fulfilling that. French Guiana is fertile, beautiful and sparsely populated with only a population of around 230,000 people.

French Guiana
Area 83,534 km2 (32,252.7 sq mi)
Population : 230,000

Hispaniola
Area 76,480 km2 (29,529 sq mi)
Population: 19,000,000

Clearly there is enough unused area to create a free Haitian state in French Guiana being that most of French Guiana is beautiful lush jungle. All France would have to do is keep the French Foreign Legion there to make sure over deforestation doesn't occur.

Did President Fernandez offer any monetary assistance?

Interesting concept, Atabey.

There is money (about US$6 million) and troops for rescue and reconstruction operations.

Normally this doesn't happen: troops from a neighboring country working as peacekeepers with blue helmets.

But in this emergency situation, it is urgent to strengthen security by rebuilding the electricity and telecoms networks, as well as in providing food and water for the hungry and newly homeless Hatians.

Let us wish that the involvement of Domincan troops is not rejected by the Haitians as our first ever "invasion" to their side of the island, and that their stay is as short and as focused as possible.

By the way, Atabey, the President of Senegal has offered fertile lands where homeless Haitians can go settle. Back to their roots?
