Santo Domingo.– Four children, including three siblings, burned to
death when a house went up in flames in the Rincon Bellaco sector of
the eastern province of Hato Mayor, police said Friday.
The victims’s ages were 6, 4, 2 and 2 1/2 months, respectively. All four of the dead were the children of Haitian migrants, police said, and the parents are now in custody.
The
father of the three older children left them and the infant locked up
in the house along to take part in New Year’s Eve festivities,
according to the police report.
Officials estimate
that around 1 million Haitians live in the country, most of them
illegal immigrants who work in agriculture and construction.

The father and mother should be locked up for the rest of the lives, period!
From: Dominican Republic
The father and mother (if they are in DR legally) should be let loose in a couple of months. This isn't really a crime by DR's laws.

TRULY SAD............
Why is it always the innocent Children are the ones who pay for Parents IRRESPONSIBILITY / STUPIDITY....all for the sake of a New years party / celebration.
I say arrest the Parents for neglect / Child endangerment / 5 counts of involuntary manslaughter and let them party in a Dominican Jail for life.
But then again so much for the Dominican Justice system, which is the real cry for Dominican
injustice.
Life's nothing but a party.
GOD SAVE THE DR FROM OURSELVES.

These people don't have $$, they live stressful lives, they didn't love their children any less than any of us here in this forum. They probably didn't have anybody to watch the kids for them. They probably had an oil lamp, because they couldn't afford electricity........

This what really pisses me off, the freaking hypocrisy "oh this people are poor, they are allowed to technically burn their children while they are at God knows where doin' God knows what?"
B.S. you are justifying these people because they are haitians, i know your trajectory in the DT, and your all-pro-haitian rhetoric.

So the same is happening in our country but in this case is a at a cultural and economical effect, my hatred is not for the individual hiaitian but for the broad immigration that its coming in huge waves, and we must stop it , anger is release when i express my feeling in those matters. mind your own f***** business!...

Neglect which is child abuse is what these parents did by leaving their children home alone.
If that would of happened here which it has, the parents would be facing manslaughter charges!
Regardless of the parents background or social status this was something preventable and it happened because the parents put themselves first before the safety of their children!
What a sad way to start the year! Hope they pay for what they done in this life and the next!
May God take mercy on the poor children souls!
Please dont turn this into a dominican vs haitian thing...this is a human tragedy! :(

This is a sad and tragic story by all measures.
Innocent lives who never got to enjoy much of the things we take for granted and should be much thankful for.
In this season of giving, forgiveness, we should find it rather appalling that their abrupt demise should be twisted to promote our agendas.
May God welcome these innocent lives into his paradise, reward them with everything they lacked in our present hell.
There are obviously some in this forum for whom we must say a prayer tonight, and I clearly do not refer to the deceased.
Let us hope that we will all have a better year and learn to get along better with one another.

Velocidad,
My friend, SLOW DOWN, not so fast:
The DR is a member nation of the United Nations and thereby a de facto ratifier of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
"The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, often referred to as CRC or UNCRC, is an international convention setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of children. Nations that ratify this international convention are bound to it by international law.'
So it is not that we are judging DR by US standards but rather by international standards and law they have committed to obey! Our leaders must learn that signing these international conventions means a little bit more than a nice photo op for the untutored masses back at home.

Yes, but according to the news, there was one of the children that didn't belong to the family, therefore, the offending parent should be judged because of the irreparable loss he has brought to another family.

So let me get this straight....we are inconciderate and illogical for thinking the parents should be punished for the neglect that caused their children's death? What responsible and caring parent leaves a 6 year old in charge of his/her preschooler siblings to go party??
Maybe I was too sheltered growing up in the DR or just lucky enough that as a child I was never left to my own devices. My mom was a single mom and had to work but I was always under the supervision of an adult.
I dont think that they meant any harm to the children when they made their selfish decision but please don't make excuses for them either!! This was preventable, and the parents will now have to live with this guilt forever!!
From: Dominican Republic, Civil Rights and Peace Activist for Our Dominican People
Sad tragedy that could have been prevented.
First of all, I grew up in DR in a barrio, never saw or heard of any, absolutely any children being left home along so the parents and more so A MOTHER have a night out, grandparents or friends always did the baby sitting.
Leaving the kids home along specially a 2 1/3 months baby and 4 years old toddler! Is inexcusable!
It is obvious the parent wanted the kids dead. If you ask a psychologist about it, that is what they will deduce, the parents wanted the kids dead.
Any ways, these two irresponsible Haitians parents will probably have another twelve kids in the next 5 years.
From: Canada, Ottawa, Ontario
Awwwww those poor babies!!! And why the hell would you leave kids that arent even over the age of 10 yet home by themselves just so you can party!!! HELL TO THE N-O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now those children can't grow up anymore. And there are about 1,000,000 haitians in dr, yeah that aint right. Yall is takin up there territory.Hopefully those parents are put to jail for life and enabled to have kids ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are prosecuting those poor people according to the Westenized Roman Code of Justice. What you don't know is the cultural behaviour behind that freaky accident. In Haiti, it is normal for parents to leave their children unatended and go about their things. They simply leave the flock under the of the older's supervision.
What has happened here is the common behaviour of a man to whom the kids doesn't belong to. In fact, with us Haitians and culturally, if you are a "pitit deyò"(out of the wedlock or from an "off the home woman" you're not cared for the same way as if you were a "pitit kay" (the opposite of a pitit deyò).
If there is a real justice system in the Dominican Republic, it should teach that bastard the art of family caring whenever it is your own offspring of not. In ayiti even though people would have condamned it the same way it is done here, however, they would have soon forgotten it as a freak accident.
