JIMANÍ. – Dusk´s warm sunlight vanishes stealthily behind the mountain, yielding to a shadowy darkness of rugged and steep landscape around this border crossing, the closest to the Haitian capital´s devastation, where the concrete rubble still hides thousands of rotting human bodies.

Some of the dusty border-town villagers haven’t been able to sleep and yesterday´s 6.1 magnitude tremor heightened their anxiety, while the heart wrenching weeping of women is heard all morning long as scared half dressed men and children scurried outside.

Port-au-Prince´s thousands of dead still haunt Natali Matos ´memory, who doesn’t hide her fear: “I still have a knot in my stomach. I have a closed stomach. I haven’t eaten, I cannot be calm. I’m scared, I fear than it can happen. I cannot sleep calmly thinking about my Haitian friends who died in the earthquake and of others who if they are alive, wounded or buried is still unknown.”

The young worker still can´t get over the trauma of the tragic night of May 24, 2004, when the Soleil river overflowed its banks and devastated her community, taking houses and farm fields ready for planting with it. Hundreds of people died and their bodies recovered, while others disappeared beneath mud.

Reliving the horror

Somehow survivors and eyewitnesses associate the 2004 tragedy with the Port-au-Prince quake and some, like Yoeli Adames, as the loss of most of her very close relatives torment her memories.

The Haiti tragedy reopened the still unhealed wound. “So many dead from the earthquake remind me of the flood. I cannot avoid it. Many people have died here and those ambulances with their sirens, those wounded who arrive at all hours, those helicopters which fly over the town, all that aid, all the movement here in Jimaní reminds me of the sadness of the tragedy almost six years ago.”

Some villagers say they here in the night, from the vast and solitary space separating the two countries, the desperate cry of people buried alive and the screams of the hungry and injured crying out for medical attention, water and food. The accounts sound like imaginary fables of fear told by the many people close to the catastrophe.

Activities in Jimaní

Despite the tragic events commerce and the daily routine continues as people go to work, banks open, students go to class and betting parlors await their habitual clients. Few businesses sell alcohol and the music is hear at a low volume, out of respect for the memory of the dead.

The Hotel Jimaní, with only 10 rooms, is the most comfortable here and lodges dozens of visitors who in these days of calamity and pressure sleep on chairs, tables, furniture, rockers, next to the swimming pool, in the dining room, the terrace, on the floor or any space available.

“This has been crazy. Ever since the earthquake in Haiti occurred so many people from all parts of the world have come here that we the employees work up to 15 hours or more. We end up dead tired,” said hotel employee Saira Trinidad.

The unusual in this town is the constant movement of vehicles with humanitarian aid which crisscross the border loaded with food, water, all types of supplies, power plants and support personnel.

The Armed Forces coordinates the operations to provide aid to the Haitian victims with other institutions such as the Emergency Operations Center Public Health, Civil Defense, the Dominican Red Cross, Santo Domingo State University UASD, the Fire departments and several civil society organizations.

At night people take precautions in their homes, fearing assaults by some of the thugs who escaped from Haitian jails when for 44 seconds the violent quake flattened even Port-au-Prince´s most sturdy structures.

The close presence of death is felt in the air, in the warm atmosphere.

Somehow the community of Jimaní will be a sad episode in the historical January 12, 2010, earthquake that destroyed the capital of the Western Hemisphere´s poorest country and now probably the world´s.

Finnally somebody acknowledge what's the real problem of Haiti...its that devil worshipped religion called voodoo....many People Might Disagree But this is a Fact whetther u believe in GOD or not who ever makes the devil his friend the Curse of GOD will fall on the people or Nation....case in point Haiti. They Have this Cursed Religion as their National religion and u can see that Haiti Has never Known prosperity in its History. Massive deforestaration, Enviromenal catastrophe, Corrupt Goverment,.... In Dominican Republic we could have thiefs by bushels but we have forest, trees, we have some sort of organization,

[[Very sad situation, but GOD will make that nation flourish, and hopefuly they will repent from that boodoo devil religion.]]

Yeah that Catholocism voodoo has been the problem in most of Latin America as well. It seems to me that nation flourished long before the Spanish and French first got there and put them under the bible and the whip and dragged a bunch of African out of their land (which was also flourishing before they arrived).

Typical. It's just like the Englishmen who were sitting around Australia saying "you know what this place needs? Rabbits". 5 years later they were screaming "Where'd all these damn rabbits come from? They're eating up everything".

There is a God. God does not recognize any one religion. God recognized all spirituality regardless of the method of expression. Go tell Pat Robertson THAT!!!

Listen to the Jersey Devil spout out of his backdoor . And I suppose that the reason that the United States is not digging itself out from under the rubble today is because Anton Levey planted the first church of Satan in California along with his Satanic bible that is one of the best all time selling books in American history ? Its ignoramouses like your self that make me ashamed of the Christian faith that Ive followed for the last 12 years .( that is not the Jesus that I know in the scriptures) Jesus alluded to people like yourself when he rebuked the Pharisees for thier self righteous hypocrocy .'' Woe to you Pharisees '' Blind guides leading the blind'' You yourselves do not enter the kingdom of God and you keep those out that are seeking to enter '' . Read the book my friend !

People think it's about religion, but is not, religion does not save, a RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST is the KEY to SALVATION. JESUS said, " Im the way, the truth, and the light, no one comes to the FATHER unless by me" so, with that said by the MASTER, WE DON'T NEED religion: catholicsm, pentecostal, adventist, etc, etc, etc... He also said "the devil is a liar and a murderer" so don't let the devil lie to you, and kill your desire to find the only true GOD; THE LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH.

Hi sweet readers and commenters. I do see that the quality has drasticly improved in these blogs and all seems to be following a positive and much better code of civil conduct... thanks to all

Voodoo has nothing to do with religions, which one way or another has all to do with beliefs. Anyone knowing about energy matters can see the human responsability of its own path from toughts. A prayer is a thougt and a wish. Just notice the feeling in the thought or the paryer, and you wiill know what is the thought behind the thought... is it love or ego? Just expect its return in own life.

The emotion felt and intensity is the emiting energy.. when felt with love, it is love sent, when felt with anger, it is anger sent, and any corresponding feeling and emotions will aglomerate and be attracted within and outside of the center of the emiting energy.

When Haîti will change with the feeling and emotion stop emiting the power from believeving in Voodo, their lives will drasticly improve

"Portefaix" means "carrier of message".

I can read in all a message of despair and of love and of anger. All and globally will benefit from wishes and solutions carried for the best to the other part of them, of each in their differences that makes each distinct... in all unity.

In the "connaissance" there is parts of "savoir" (knowing). the difference is that in "savoir" there is no more judgements because ther is no more true or false".. it is.

The "savoir" is the goal of humanity and no one may know for someone else, and all are "catalysers" of own beliefs. Believe in you and that makes "you" responsible. Believe in any fears and that is what you will get. Judge and that is what you will get... be responsible, believe in you, each is divine.

Religions has based in fear of God, when God is love and all, a paradox? No, he has given all to each of us, all power, and fear is also part, and "each" choice of thoughts, so choose wisely thoughts words and actions to emotions.

Essentially they were boycotted point blank b/c they were independent with no Euro influences unlike the gran Columbia or others countries who became independent with help of those Europeans who tired with the mother land!!!!!!!!!!

The true god "is you". Not a post, not a book, not a tread, not what I say... it is "You".

Be responsible, "be He", in "His" image, "Be" and "The" reflection of "His" mirror. Reward and elevate "Him" elevating "You" and each ...all he has given to all of us... believe in you... be "His" responsability by being "Yours".

My last message in this tread... all "Is" in power "from" within each... send love from "You" as also to Haîtians and to other causes that requires love and being exposed to thougts to actions of love and "knowing"... Just as toward the ones you love including "Yourself".... and "all" will see a new "conscience" with own words and actions taking a path of a change.

<<My people perish due to their lack of knowledge.>>

And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger. Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone. [2 Kings 17:17-18]

The LORD God can and will punish idolatrers, sorcerers & all of those who bow & worship other false gods. The LORD Jehovah is a jealous God and while He is love, He is also righteous and holy, holy, holy and calls on His people to be holy as well. You are not to worship other gods, saints, virgins, but the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob. These are not my words, but the words of the LORD God. Any problems? Bring it up with Him when the time comes for you to be judged.

If one considers themselves a ''true Christian '', the bible teaches in many places that God spares his wrath on a nation for the sake of those that love Him . America has more cults and false religions than any other nation on earth that the bible refers to as the ''spirit of antichrist '' and as I have said already , is still in one piece. Likewise , Haiti has thousands of true bible believing followers of Jesus Christ . Lets not confuse the issue people . This is NOT the wrath of God any more than I believe 911 was the wrath of God on America. When the judgement of God finally comes upon this earth , it will be world wide and it will make this incident in Haiti look like an out of control camp fire in comparison.

Don't think for a moment that the LORD is going to do nothing until the Final Day of Judgment. This isn't about God's wrath. This is about reaping what you sow. This is about Satan doing his work (steal, kill & destroy) and God allowing it to happen not only to Haiti but to any other nation as it has happened.

The very fact that you deny God's involvement, reality & relevance in all things physical and spiritual, puts into evidence the demonic veil that's over your eyes. This is why man needs a RELATIONSHIP with Christ Jesus accompanied by a life of prayer, fasting & daily reading of God's Word.

In the spiritual realm, what you don't know can KILL you, not just physically, but also spiritually.

God is involved with everything Friend . Read the first few chapters of Job and remind me who the culprit was behind the scenes of his personal tragedy that God ALLOWED, SO that in the end ,Job WOULD SEE GOD. God allows these events that through them some might come to the knowledge of the truth . Oh yes , Sodom and Gomorah , right ? If you recall, Abraham negotiated with God down to 10 righteous , for whom God would have spared that city , which tells me that He would have spared it for just 1 also . Rest assured that some of those poor souls trapped under the rock are true blood bought children of Christ . I suppose you think that God is judging them for a masturbation habit they cant break or because they are not reading 3 chapters a day in the Psalms ? Please dont embarass the family any more brother , with your fire and brimstone church playing theology that you learned from your self annointed book pastors .

2. It was not the "Holy Spirit" , but Spirits or Loas who possessed these fidels. You'll see the sames scenes in Afro-Americans church. It's from African religions.

You have to remember that the first African community in Hispaniola was located in the present Dominican republic. The first slave revolt in the new world occured in Santo Domingo in 1522, it was Muslim African slaves from Senegal (West Africa). Dominicans African ancestors are mainly from the Congo region (central Africa) and West Africa.

The Tainos ancestry is a racist government propaganda (under Trujillo who had Haitian ancestry...), because French when they controlled AYITI (the real tainos name of Hispaniola) in 1697 (Ryswick Treaty) didn't find NONE. ..

And Carlos Esteban Deive The Dominican scholar is very clear :

Thus the African and Tainos couple was more common than the Spanish/ Taino couple.

Written by: dagtan, 22 Jan 2010 8:24 AM

nehesy,

If you read Mr. Esteban Deive more you will find out that when Colon arrived on the island of AYITI in 1492, there were upwards of 9 million inhabitants. These inahbitants were a mix of Tainos, Caribes and Arawak, with the Arawak and taino people as the majority on this specific island. On the other hand the Caribe were like the bullies of the day and the Tainos very peaceful indeed and with a concentration on the island of Borinquen as well.

By 1522, there was very little left of the natives on Hispaniola. The few that was left, was only preserved by the marriages that took place between the African and the Tainos or native, which were very few, while spanish and native was even rarer, hence our lack of a mestizo group, as indicated by Mr. Esteban.

Why do we had in the past eathquakes in : Italy , China, Japan, Turkey ? These people don't know anything about Vuduism right ? For me it was only due to 2 things :

1. The will of God
2. Science ( The haitian earthquake was seen as a high probable event in 2007 by scientists)

Well, my friends dagtan and Nehesy, with all due respect, there are people out there that disagree with you (myself included). If something, Taino heritage, both genetic and cultural, is very much alive among our campesinos both in the Cibao and the southwestern regions. In that sense, Dr. Lynne Guitar (who initially began her studies of our people by analyzing the african component) have a very interesting article about the Taino component in the dominican makeup: http://www.kacike.org/GuitarEnglish.html

Also, Jorge "Baracutei" Estevez, the resident Taino expert in the dominican diaspora, have made some interesting inputs on the issue in our very own forum: http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....Taino-Ancestry-Among-Dominicans/1

I think that we should be very careful with only relying in eyeballing (that is, on physical features only) at the time of making a scientific analysis of a people's heritage.

1. I know Dr Lynne Guitar's works and if we look carefully at these Dominicans with (supposed) tainos ancestry showed on the pictures, they don't look mestizos (spanish/tainos) but zambos ( African/ Indians or Tainos).

As I said earlier Africans and native "indians" joined together in Brazil , the US, Cuba, Hispaniola etc and fought their oppressor BUT the mestizo in the special case of santo Domingo was very rare ( see also the book of Moreau de Saint Mery, a French who described in two books the French and Spanish sides of Hispaniola in the 18 th century)

You can find these phenotypes in Africa for sure.

I suggest also Dr Lynne Guitar's essay about merengue's origins...And also Ned Sublette books about Cuban music (you'll find statements very closed to what Dr Lynne Guitar and Fradique Lizardo say about the origins of the Dominican merengue).

I don't deny the mixing present in the DR because you can find whites (recent migrants), some calling themselves whites...But

2...actually they look north africans (people from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia etc), people with brown color ( the majority of people in africa are brown and they aren't mixed with anybody), people looking Indian ( indians from India), blacks ( who by the way are supposed to have haitian ancestry), and mulattoes.

Dominican mulattoes have strong african features (bantu) in general.

Nice to see you again my brother, since I have been forced to do some swimming in the gutter and I think it is time to have an intelligent exchange for once.

Lautaro, you are correct on the presence of our Taino heritage in the cibao region specially. Unfortunately, I think that you misunderstood Esteban's argument, which is based on physicality instead of language and customs, which to anyone with knowledge of our diverse ancestry is wide open. Everywhere, you go you can see some traits and hear words that come directly from our Taino's connection, even more than PR, yet they make sure everyone knows about, that is the next Lautaro, we need to popularize our tainismo.

Finally, when you have a chance, go visit the Centro Leon en Santiago, you'll find Estevez' work there.

There are only two bourgeois US media outlets that have reported on Cuba's response to the deadly 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti. One was the disreputable Fox News, an outlet of the vile reactionary bourgeois media in the USA, which claimed, falsely, that the Cubans were absent from the list of neighboring Caribbean countries providing aid. The other was the somewhat respected Christian Science Monitor, an outlet of the liberal bourgeois media, which reported incorrectly that Cuba had dispatched only 30 doctors to the stricken nation.

Thus, if FOX and the Christian Science Monitor are any indication, there isn’t much difference between the liberal and reactionary bourgeois media in the USA.

As for the rest of the bourgeois media in the USA, they have simply ignored Cuba's role and actions.

Con't

The vast majority of the doctors in Haiti are either Cubans or Cuban-trained Haitian doctors. Almost all of Cuban and Cuban-educated Haitian doctors survived the Jan. 12 earthquake without serious injury. On Jan. 12, there were 400 Cuban doctors in Haiti and 600 Cuban-educated Haitian doctors. This group of 1000 doctors carries the main load for health care, contrary to the cappie lies of Fox News and the gross understatement of the Christian Science Monitor.

As of Tues, Jan. 19, WHO said that there are 13 “hospitals” [not one-tent clinics or one-truck medical facilities] functioning in Haiti. Cuba runs two of the hospitals, one in Port au Prince, the capital in the north, and the other Jacmil, the southern city

Each of Cuban administered hospitals has staff of over 100 doctors. With the exception of the two US military-administered hospitals, most of the other WHO-designated “hospitals” have less than 10 doctors, who are also Cuban or Cuban educated.

But who's in command? Christian Science Monitor, http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Mili....uake-relief.-But-who-s-in-command ).

3. Tell us about the top quality health care in Cuba ?
4. Is it true most Cubans die from accidents and decease instead of malnutrition ?
5. How many American Doctors are trained in Cuba yearly ?

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE US STOPPED ALL AIDE AND REMOVED ALL AMERICAN PERSONAL FROM HAITI ?

Would it be safe to say CUBA CAN TAKE OVER ALL OPERATIONS ?

The death was due to negligence of the people in charge at that institution. The commie gov has stated the people in charge will certainly get their punishment - a severe one.

In the USA I suppose more than 26 citizens die every day of negligence from insurence corp., but most importantly because of negligence from the US government and the American citizens who do not want a public healthcare to all citizens whatsoever. What is wrong with the Canadians next door, who can provide health care for everybody. Might it be they inhabit a greater social awareness??? or less gready??? or perhaps both???

Riosm,

Thanks for your fine questions, except for No. 4.

1. How many Americans escape to Cuba for medical aide ?

About 45,000 US medical tourists annually and growing.

2. How many Cuban Doctors are left in Cuba ?

About 75,000

3. Tell us about the top quality health care in Cuba ?

Good enough to attract over 200,000 medical tourists worldwide per year.

4. Is it true most Cubans die from accidents and decease instead of malnutrition ?

This "decease" ... about which you speak ... that causes death is an unfamiliar concept.

5. How many American Doctors are trained in Cuba yearly ?

About 40 who complete their training and about 160 who are in training

Correspondingly,
Belial

oooo

Riosm,

The US imperialists promised $100 million in aid to the Haitians. The US aircraft carrier currently off the north coast of Haiti costs $2 million per day to operate. If the carrier stays there for two weeks, it will consume almost a quarter of the aid promised to the Haitians. It it stays there for a month, it consumes about half of the promised aid.

So, your question means: What happens if the aircraft carrier leaves?

Haiti will have 10,000 fewer alcoholics and dope addicts.

Correspondingly,
