President Leonel Fernandez and Pedro Rafael Pena . in the Higuey Basilica yesterday.
Santo Domingo.- Haiti´s Government has accepted Dominican Republic´s offer to reinforce the humanitarian corridor established between Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince with 150 soldiers, the Nations United (UN), said yesterday, which denies an alleged rejection disclosed by a wire service.
According to the agency EFE UN spokesman Martin Nesirky had said that Haiti president René Préval approved the entry of Dominican soldiers to help distribute humanitarian aid to the quake victims.
The official also stressed that the troops will collaborate with the Peruvian contingent of the UN Haiti Stabilization Mission (Minustah), under the command of Brazilian general Floriano Peixoto Vieira.
The UN spokesman´s announcement refutes the information attributed to a Haitian official on Préval´s rejection to the deployment of up to 800 soldiers, given the historical conflicts between the neighboring countries.
Yesterday Haiti´s ambassador Fritz Cinéas denied his Government´s rejection to the Dominican proposal and on the contrary attributed the report to an intention to damage the relations between both nations.
Moreover Armed Forces minister Pedro Rafael Peña yesterday stressed that the Dominican contingent wouldn’t go to Haiti as troops, but rather as personnel to aid Minustah´s "blue helmets," whereas Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales noted that the initiative to send troops to the devastated nation was of the United States.

this should be a good thing for both countries...............I had said last week about the offer of troops to assist ..........." this is a very generous offer and one that should not be discounted .....1300 Dominican soldiers with cultural familiarity and compassion can accomplish the work of many many hands and can be extremely effective in helping a situation that also impacts their own country men in many ways .....

Excerpts from a DR newspaper (El Dia) editorial:
"The presence of Dominicans in MINUSTAH would create an additional source of tension in relations between the two countries, and could mess up all that has been achieved after the display of solidarity offered by the Dominican government and its people.
Any conflict in which they were involved Dominican soldiers members of MINUSTAH without question would bring out the theme of nationalities and historical tensions.
The Dominican Republic was right to offer the Dominican military and Haiti would act correctly so that Dominican military presence in MINUSTAH did not materialize".

Dominicanos,
One of the things I want you to understand is that Sr. Leonel Fernandez is opening the door to convert himself into one of the greatest Dominican Presidents. He understands the international and regional political dynamics, so he’s engaging the Dominican Republic (DR) in a process of helping Haiti after the devastating earthquake.
A stable Haiti will bring a more stabilized and prosperous DR. Sr Fernandez does understand it, and he’s working to position the DR as an unavoidable emerging power in the region. It’s NOT a showoff; it’s a very scientific approach, which is NOT solely political, humanitarian, but economic and social…

Haiti is not in the position of rejecting any help of any kind.
I know they appreciate sincerely our help.
Besides, is not a moment for funnies comments or make bad taste ones .
Please let's respect the pain of our brothers and neighbors, we where very close to a disgrace like the one in Haiti . It could happens to RD in any moment, and let see if we are going to make fun of it.
If you don't have nothing to offer to Haiti in this difficult moment , please don't make their pain bigger.
SHUT UP...............That will be the better offer you can make to a disgrace like this.

People can say anything they want about Leonel and I am not a supporter of the President or his party but he has managed the situation in the neighbouring nation of Haiti with great mastery!
He has shown that his political prowess far exceeds the island nation he currently governs and that is to be admired even from the opposition.I only wish that he would do more internally especially in my home region which is sucked dry to provide for toys Santo Domingo .
As far as being friends ,let's get real people ...that is a worthy goal but we are far from being friends and hopefully this sad event is the beginning of a new relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.

I for one will NEVER completely trust any Haitian government until a public declaration is made respecting our territorial integrity and our rights to the land we now have, after that everything else can be worked on towards a goal of mutual convenience including the Haitian documentation of all their nationals in Dominican territory and bi-national agreements on repatriation and border security .
Unfortunately at the moment Haiti does not really exist so we will have to wait until a stable Haitian government arises that is willing to find common ground with us and to create a better future for children on both sides of La Española.
but if everything work, could be a good sign of good day to come
