Santo Domingo. - The Armed Forces on Friday said it awaits the Haitian Government and the United Nations definitive military procedure to send a unit of soldiers to assist in the humanitarian effort, the first time ever Dominican troops would enter the neighboring nation.
Rafael Peña said although the number of soldiers, whom would be under the orders of the UN’s peacekeeping force Minustah, has yet to be determined, the Armed Forces has a especially equipped unit which was trained by the United Nations on that type of humanitarian work and assist victims of natural disasters such as Haiti’s.
He added that they would wear the same uniforms of the UN to work exclusively on humanitarian aid.
Haiti accepted Dominican Republic’s offer to send 150 soldiers to secure the highway linking Port-au-Prince with the Dominican border, United Nations spokesman Martin Nesirky said, “to protect this corridor, a vital route aside from the aerial route, and Haiti accepted.”
“That military personnel will work in close contact with the contingent the Peruvian mission, that already is parked in the border, and will be under the order the commander the force the mission,” the UN said in New York on Thursday.

Yes but they do not come as fighters but as peace keepers ,they do not go to pillage but to assist in the rebuilding ..I hope that when they eventually leave the Haitian people will look on the Dominicans as being good and peaceful and the relationship between the two peoples will have been improved as a result of the soldiers being there. It is a really good story

Enough resources are being spent in haiti by the DR... Economist Bernado Vega says that is money out of our economy and will produce smaller outputs for 2010.... Let the rich nations handle haiti and lets get back to work....

Well said Carlos,
This is all well and good that Leo has visions for a new Haiti , but the same question keeps arising . WHAT IS HE DOING ABOUT THE OLD PROBLEMS IN THE D.R ? LEO can hardly afford to pay the salaries of HIS soldiers he is sending over and he now miracuosly has the backing and the resources to bail out his nieghbor in thier time of distress? . I guess that is where all that money is going that the WB lent him ?

Dominicanos,
One of the things I want you to understand is that Sr. Leonel Fernandez is opening the door to convert himself into one of the greatest Dominican Presidents. He understands the international and regional political dynamics, so he’s engaging the Dominican Republic (DR) in a process of helping Haiti after the devastating earthquake.
A stable Haiti will bring a more stabilized and prosperous DR. Sr Fernandez does understand it, and he’s working to position the DR as an unavoidable emerging power in the region. It’s NOT a showoff; it’s a very scientific approach, which is NOT solely political, humanitarian, but economic and social…

It sounds so sauve Don and very good in theory ,but if only it were true I would be the first in line to have my Leo shirt signed by him while begging his forgiveness and offering to be his personal footstool for the duration of his next term. Surely you also believe that the upcoming wave of an unprecedented number of displaced Haitians that Leo WELCOMES over the hill in a continued effort to secure his place as the U.NS NEW POSTER CHILD will stabilize a choking economy that already lacks sufficient resources to provide for its 8 million people and possibly 3.5 million Haitians that are fighting for a piece of concrete to lay thier heads on tonight in the streets of Higuey , Santiago and Santo D.. This , is what dreams are made of !

dagtan yes I agree with you and what a great posting by Don Manuel ..makes one proud to be here.

to turn one´s back on a neighbour in distress would be an unforgivable act and I am proud that the DR is doing all it can to assist Haiti even though it may mean some things in the DR will have to be deferred

Martha,
I beg to know since when have the D.RS problems NOT been deferred at the expense of its people ? Leos trying to rescue the titanic when his row boats are sinking ..POR FAVOR ...

To apologize for the Haitian dirty elite ,like any magician and demaguogue you need distract the attention of you audience.
we all know too well that the Haitian black and mulatoe rulers greed and thirst for power have contributed to turn Haiti into that pig stale that the contry is now.
Their main role have always been to protect the wealth of the elite.
SO WHAT IS YOUR POINT ??????
we all know that is true the Haitian dirty elite , (these foreign leeches) has controlled exclusively Haiti economy for many years and is no where to be found to help when the country faces a crisis.
whether it is is a natural crisis or a human crisis that usually they engineer ,you see these cynical , shameless.and vulgar cowards running for their lives filling all hotel rooms in DR
Haiti is not their country,They would have kept the wealth in Haiti , they would have reinvested in Haiti if Haiti was their country
Do I answer you ?

my point is this the Haitian political class is a mirror image of the Haitian Elite. My question to you Sir do you hold them to the same accountability. Are you like Al Sharpton or Jesse who quick to protest when a white man kill a black person, but do not show any outrage when a young 15 Years black child looses his life to a black thug for an I Pod.
What Have you done to uplift your brothers and sisters back in Haiti?
Are you as quick to go after the enemy within, or you only capable of identify those that don't look like you. Yes the elite may be checking in for a moment of rest in some of the fine establisments in SD, but your elected official are lounging at their villas in some of the fine neighborhood in DR. Are you just as upset about that?

When was the last time the masses voted one in? And I'm sure you wondering why we keep getting the same results

I am so mad very good people die in the earthquake, the incompetent Preval did not and Haiti will keep suffering until then..
We need a real leader that can help Haitian change their mentality, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere with the fastest growing population and 360, 000 orphans is this responsible, proverty is the direct reason of uncontrol parenthood and disrespect for the environment ?
Please Preval do the honorable thing resign appoint a leader, do not do it for you but for the country, be the bigger man.

Given our past, and for obvious reasons, this just might not be best idea.
I know we have best of intentions; however, couldn't we leave security to other forces already in place, and maybe contribute with medical corps instead? In my simple mind, what Haiti clearly needs with greatest urgency is medical assistance. DR has may doctors and maybe it could best contribute by alleviating this aspect of situation.

your point about the environment degradation is well taking, your issue about population explosion is a very good one. But to blame these things on Preval is a little bit disengenous don't you think. You may hate the guy but you have to admit the fact he is the only Haitian head of state to have retired in Haiti, back to Marmelade after his first term ,unstead of high tailing out of Haiti with stolen millions speaks volume about the guy.
If you feel so passionate about our need for a new leader, maybe you might want to take a look in the mirror, why wait for a messiah to come.
