Santo Domingo.– Today, a national holiday, hundreds of Dominican organizations will pay tribute to Founding Father Juan Pablo Duarte in the 197th anniversary of his birth, with wreaths, parades, masses and other activities.

Dominicnas will visit the remains of Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and of Ramon Matias Mella in the National Altar today, taking flowers to deposit in the park located at Independencia and Bolivar avenues.

January 26 marks the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte. During his early years he studied in Spain (1828-1833). Upon his return to the Dominican Republic, he found that young Dominicans were resentful of Haitian rule.

In response to this unrest, he and several other patriots organized a secret society, La Trinitaria, to work toward independence and to stimulate liberalism. His first attempt to oust the Haitians in 1843 collapsed, and he fled the country; but his followers succeeded in overthrowing the Haitians the next year.

In February 1844 Duarte returned, and the Dominican Republic proclaimed its independence.

Thank you Juan Pablo Duarte for uniting all sections of Dominican society against those who sought to wipe out our language our culture and our institutions .The great difference between you and those who opposed us was that they based their nationhood on a racist ideal while you provided a unifying force for Dominicans of all shades!
Please forgive those who would for the sake of a perverse ideal called multiculturalism erase the achievements that you and others paid for with blood sweat and tears ,for the most insidious threat is the one that creeps in silently and the worst of people are those who would aid such destruction of the nation especially when they have forgotten what it means to be Dominican!

Juan Pablo Duarte, born in Santo Domingo from a Dominican mother from El Seybo, and (mainland) Spanish father from Cadiz, Spain said these words:

"Los enemigos de la Patria, por consiguiente nuestros, están todos muy acordes en estas ideas; destruir la nacionalidad aunque para ello sea preciso aniquilar a la Nación entera".

Which still rings true today.

All we have today are a bunch of crooks, united in their desire to get rich at the expense of the pueblo.

This rings as true today as it did then for we still have people who would sell the country for financial or ideological reasons abound .Duarte did not have problems calling these people traitors and enemies of the nation and neither should we.

Duarte was a great man ,but he did not live through the REPEATED Haitian attempts to destroy our nation for they never truly accepted our independence though they were practically newly arrived interloper while we had been here for over 200 years!

Dominican Republic has always been on the receiving end of Haitian "affection" with the one exception being the tyrant Trujillo's massacre. In general Dominicans have demonstrated that we have accepted the nation of Haiti as a reality while the same cannot be said from the other side.

True peace can only be arrived at through respect and not by positioning yourself on all fours and letting yourself be fuc..ed!

We in DR have many leaders that step up to the plate in times of crisis, and in times of peace.
We are very lucky in DR to have been spared this immense natural tragedy, that affected our neighbors, and which puts all our other ills in perspective. Yes, we have corruption maybe as high as 30%, but not like some other countries that are run by kleptocrats, with a corruption rate of 95%.
We must not be so critical when we have attained so much democracy and progress. Freedom of expression is taken for granted in the DR, the electoral process has progressed immensely, and the judicial system needs improvement, but our institutions are strong, and getting stronger.
Corruption is still high and will reduce slowly to maybe 15-20% of GNP which will be quite an accomplishment in the near future.
Coup de etats and dictators are a thing of the past, and democratic changes of government are the norm. The DR is an example to the rest of the Caribbean and keeps going forward.

His birthday will come and go without much celebration or proper remembrance of his sacrifice, nevertheless his work cannot be undone as we enjoy his greatest gift , The one thing nobody can't take away from US

Himno a Juan Pablo Duarte/ The Hymn to Juan Pablo Duarte

Here we go...

Some referring to very important historical events and others simply kidding around unreal things.

History lapses in a circle, therefore - Haitians one day will rise and try to take over what they think is theirs?

For those who believe we are racist, it's not about that. It's about the fact there are men who cannot see beyond their past and present. As a result, one have countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, etc, etc, etc. My point is, if we keep feeling complaisant about the situation in the DR with Haitians, one day not so soon we won’t probably be Dominicans anymore. They don’t need to attack us with sticks and machetes. All they need to do is make babies and more babies, breed amongst ourselves, and we’re finished.

JPD said:

"Simply look at Rome, English Empire, Persian Empire, etc. All dissolved ‘cause of corrupt politicians who believed in MULTICULTURALISM"

JPD with all due respect but could have not been further from the truth. First, the main reason why these empire failed is because of the total opposite. They became old inflexible empire that had exhausted all their human capital and for fear of recruiting from conquered lands, fell to the hands of the barbarians and decay. Take a look at the Roman Empire, if Hadrian would had absorved the people of GAUL (today's) France and the people of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) there will be no need to move the empire to east. The fact that they wanted to stay pure to their Etruscan ways limited their ability to support the republic.

English Empire often bragged about the "THE SUN NEVER SETS ON THE BRITISH EMPIRE" meaning that that they had so muc territory around the globe that the sun was laways shining in one of their possessions.
Written by: dagtan, 25 Jan 2010 4:36 PM
From: United States
However, they never worried about intergrating those territories and allowing those people to make contributions to the Empire in turns of culture and skills acquired via their interaction with the land. If the crown would have given its American colony representation and a place in their society, then these people would have no need to break away, hence, "NO TAX WITHOUT REPRESENTATION."

Finally, the Persian Empire, the problem with XER II, was that every subject to his empire hated him and the persians for the control and lack of affection for these people. Therefore, as soon as Alexander the Great hit the land, most of the foreign soldiers simply retreated and allowed Alexander to destroy the evil Persians as they saw it.

Finally, the reason why the American Superpower has been able to survive for such a long time is due to its enbracement of multiculturalism and taking advantage of all those skills coming together under one country.

In reality we have three founding father, but of all three Duarte was the most outspoken and determined to liberate the country from Haitian's occupation. Duarte was a visionary and a man of liberal thinking, therefore, at an early age he came under the pressure of local leaders who wanted to return things back to Spain's domination.

In 1821, Mr. Nunez de Caceres became the first head of state of what was called Spanish Haiti, with the overthrow of the Spanish Crown. At this time Mr. Caceres asked for help from Mr. Bolivar of Venezuela, hence the connection of Duarte to this country. Bolivar denied any help to the people of Spanish Haiti, therefore, opening the door for Mr. Boyer leader of the Republic of Haiti to come in and take over the,

Now pay attention here, since things get a little messy at this point in our history. In 1843, after fighting for the better part of his youth to liberate the eastern side, Mr. Duarte is exiled to Venezuela by the Boyer's occupation for being a trouble maker. During this time he continue with the pressure, until 1844 when the haitian finally left and he returned triumphantly back to his home land. The trouble were only starting for Mr. Duarte at this point, remember i said that he was a visionary and liberal thinker, well this did not go well with the loyalist.

The loyalist led by Gen. Santana a powerful landowner under the Spanish crown did not allowed Mr. Duarte to assume a post on the Island, instead he was shipped to Venezuela as a Dominican council by the Santana government.

He was never allowed to return to his beloved land and died in Venezuela nobly in 1876. Mr. Duarte never received the pension nor payments promised by the Santana gover

Now the most interesting part is that Mr. Duarte's remains were taken back to the Dominican republic by the first president of haitian decent, his name was Ulises Heraux (edit please). This president i believe in 1884 or 1885 buried Duarte along side his two most trusted friends and founding fathers, Sanchez and Mella in La Puerta del Conde, were they still rest today.

So no he did not died a pauper, but a man who because he was not wiling to give up his visions and liberal thinking for the favor of the Spanish, decided to stay and not be part of that rotten empire. This guy was a true hero, he gave all of his fortunes and energy to the cause of our land being free not only of haitian's occupation, but also from the influence of the rotten empire as he though of spain during his last days.

Dagtan, thank you, thank you very much for a most extensive trivia of Dominican history. I really appreciate it. A bit about myself. I am a Dominican national living in the US for 53 years. My first return after departure since the 50s was in 1987-1993. I bought a house in which I plan to retire in a few years there. I am working towards the purchase of an apartment building in the capital city for extra income during my retirtement. The little Dominican history I know is what I have managed to pick up while in college about my country here in the US, so it is quite limited. In addition, I am not quite sure of its veracity. I have many more questions and concerns I would like to address, but I am rather conservative. For example, I have a problem with the name of our country, Dominican Republic. I would rather it be called "Quisqueya."

This unification issue is something that only people who are very poorly informed seem to think is possible for I cannot imagine many Haitians or many Dominicans wanting any part of it ....The amount of paranoia is frightening ....This is something that cannot be imposed by outsiders ....Stop beating the war drums The moment anyone with a brain makes themselves aware of the complexity of the issue they realize it was not such a good idea no matter what they thought from afar......STOP THE WAR DRUMS...........................STOP THE WAR DRUMS

This is not about WAR DRUMS, this is about national pride, identity, and power strugle.

In 500+ years, what have they created and put together? Nothing, right!!!

Is that what you want? 500+ years of nothing. We already got plenty of our own ppl that do not understand what the past, present, and much less their future looks like?

And the fact, someone even thinks of uniting these two parts is an abomination to us DOMINICANS.

This is not about WAR DRUMS, this is about what's right? Dominicans for Dominicans, and for only those who are willing to bring positivism.

I know it's hard for some to understand, however after 500+ years we are this far, and if we keep working for a better future we'll get it.

Therefore, we should eliminate any threat at whatever cost!!

FUERA LA DESTRUCCION DE LA RD. ARRIBA EL DOMINICANISMO.

JPD ,all fine except for one thing, they have only been there 200 plus years. You see that is a serious bit of misinformation they try to pull somehow starting their history when Columbus arrived when the people known today as Haitians did not arrive until the late 1700's ,before that they were in West Africa unaware that this island even existed. They used the name Haiti to somehow lend some depth to their shallow presence on the island. We then spent a good part of the 19th century fighting off the Haitians who did not accept our right as a free nation and who in many cases wanted to annihilate us (see Faustin Soulouque) yet somehow due to the twisted media and the Afrolambon movement ,Trujillo's one action gets all the press while the continuous and persistent Haitian actions are virtually unknown .
