SANTO DOMINGO.- Haiti ambassador Fritz Cinéas yesterday announced that from now on, the Maria Montez International Airport, located in southwestern Barahona province, will be the terminal which Haitians who live abroad will use to travel to and from Port-au-Prince. “Barahona then, would be like the airport of Port-au-Prince. The passengers would arrive in airplanes at Barahona, and they would go to Port-au-Prince in buses.”
The Haitian diplomat called the Dominican authorities decision to facilitate the Maria Montez a great gesture of solidarity with the Haitian people, who’ll be able to travel to or return from abroad via that terminal, which since built in the late 1980s is considered a white elephant.
Although dozens of flights and humanitarian aid for Haiti arrive in Maria Montez daily, Cinéas noted that it was in Monday’s meeting held in the border town Jimaní, when his Government formally requested it from the Dominican authorities.
The Haitian diplomat, who reviewed his country’s situation after the powerful quake which devastated its capital, also thanked the Dominican Government’s to build the span of highway from Jimaní to the Haiti town Fond Parisien.
Haiti’s situation is slowly normalizing
Although Cinéas considered the lack of coordination in the aid arriving from different parts of the world unfortunate, he hailed the solidarity of Dominicans and, in a message to the Haitians residing in the country, he invited them “to be worthy” of the support received by the Dominican Government and the community.

According to a radio commentator:
One more step to completion of the unification or DR-Haiti ""fusion" project. We are slowly being duped, like donkeys with a carrot in front of us held by a stick.
The carrots are the immense profits to take a bite of the Haiti reconstruction projects, and increased commerce revitalized by international donations.
A year from now the money will be gone, nowhere to be found, the Haitian officials will be living the high life abroad, and the DR will be left holding the empty bag, now with the whole country of Haiti dependent on us, with their hands extended.
I sure hope his predictions are wrong, the money is used well, and the illegal Haitian to DR immigration is reversed.

The DR also offered to rebuild the highway from Barahona airport to Jimani and then on to PAP, without it the Barahona airport use will be challenging and uncomfortable to say the least.
It is not clear who will pay for the highway, but what is real clear is that the DR wants a head start in the lucrative Haitian reconstruction projects, and be first in line to repair the highway to PAP.
Many of the roads in DR, including the autopista Duarte, our main highway from Santo Domingo to Santiago, are in a bad state of disrepair, and full of holes.
We need to maintain and repair our own highways as well, that connect to all the tourist and resort areas, that are in urgent need of repair and expansion.

oooo
By "lack of coordination," Haitian Ambassador Cineas no doubt refers to US imperialist interference and obstruction of the flow of aid from different parts of the world to the Haitian people.
The US imperialists want to decide who in Haiti gets aid even if the aid is from France, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, China, Spain, etc. The imperialists are not so generous when it comes to providing aid themselves, unless one thinks sending killers is aid. The imperialists want to steal credit for the aid others send to Haitian people. Imperialists also dish out on preferential basis, aid ... stolen from other countries ... to reactionary Haitians who support imperialist policies and ambitions.

You're on point with your assertion, but in my opinion none of this theories in regard of DR Haiti unification will come to fruition unless some kind of strong leadership is establish in Haiti first.
Nevertheless the fact that the US and EU are now fighting over who will take the lead overseeing Haiti recovery opens the debate as to whether or not this plan to unify the island exist.
But the big ?'s are
Are the Haitian people up to the challenge of rebuilding their country once and for all or are they going to return to the old ways?
If (and that's a big IF) Haiti somehow carry out successfully a recovery project and is able to come out of the economic quagmire that is been perennially stock, I'm sure the relationship between the two countries will improve considerably and having an open border policy won't be a problem since we're all in the same boat.

With the exception of the Americans and those other Jacque come latelys that are drooling over the next plate of sloppy seconds, I didnt realize that there even was any leadership in Haiti right now which is all the more reason this inevitable scenario is already playing out before your very eyes . yes,I am sure that you are correct and this underutilized airport may actually be a money winner for the DR , This has nothing to do with any scheme of unification which would need to be voted on under the new constitution and would have zero chance of success. It has nothing to do with the 1% elite of Haiti who I imagine now realize that their days of impropriety are coming to an end ,
it is just a good solution to the current overcrowding of the main airport in Haiti ..Maybe Barahona will also have some spin off benefits ,,I hope so.

Sometimes, when you give a hand you run the risk of loosing the whole arm. The Dominican government, in an obvious effort to win brown nosing points with the international community, is bending over backwards to accomodate our neighbors in their hour of need and justifiably so. But now more than ever there can be no blurring of lines as to where Haiti begins and ends on the island. The handing over of airports? The building of infrastructure in a neighboring state when that's precisely what's needed back home? Ominous signs.
From: Dominican Republic, Boca de Chavon
dagtan ,,I tend to think you are correct ..I was unaware that the money was going to any official or any government department in Haiti so that officials could become richer, the World Bank is managing it´s own projects and I am sure all the donor countries are aware of the Hispanola custom of corruption and want their money used well ,,the countries all have experience in donating money and the conference in the UN will decide how the developments will proceed.
I dare say that there were about 200,000 deaths in the DR,we would appreciate delays in capital projects in neighbouring countries so that we could do essential rebuilding ,
the road from Barahona to PaP is actually not too bad ,,BBC showed many photos of it almost deserted now and declared it in very good condition but if the Dominican contractors are positioning themselves for any future contracts , then good luck to them .
