Success: President Fernández has forged a strong alliance with the Catholic Church.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo. - The maintenance of a stable economy, president Leonel Fernandez bolstered leadership as an international mediator reached through his trips abroad, the constitutional reform, the pact signed with the two opposition parties and the implementation of the social dialogues are the Government’s most notable accomplishments in 2009, but major scandals in his administration also led to tarnishing his image.

The authorities say that in spite of the international economic crisis which hammered even the developed nations the country’s economy grew 3.5 and shows the Administration’s capacity.

In 2009 Fernandez also played an active international role by taking his country’s position to the different nations in relating to the crises of Honduras and demanded that rich nations do more to solve Haiti’s. In several occasions his Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador pars have asked him to help seek solutions to conflicts, as well as to the coup in Honduras.

Fernandez, through his more than 10 trips abroad in 2009, took to the intentional arena positions such as the creation of funds to face the problems derived from the world economic crisis and proposed Haiti’s membership in the Latin American Community.

He was the world’s most outspoken leader against the coup which deposed Manuel Zelaya in Honduras, to the point of asking that that nation be suspended from the United States-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement.

Scandals

The recently ended year was also rife with government scandals, including the one which led to the firing of Tourism minister Félix Jiménez, replaced by Francisco Javier Garcia.

The Dominican Tourism Press Association (ADOMPRETUR) said Jimenez “has been critical of the press because since last year it has denounced his conflicts of interest in managing areas of government in a questionable manner.”

Another scandal arose from the Government’s approval to build a cement plant near the Los Haitises National Park, which was discarded from the ensuing uproar.

I would never say that the attempted involvement in Honduras nor the rewriting of a constitution that has never been seen by the overwhelming number of the people were successes . He may have been simply playing a game up the middle between the socialist countries and the USA but his attempts in relation to Honduras were never going to succeed.
He also was part of the group of men who have prevented women obtaining an abortion , ..this should have been a vote only for women .
However ,the economy has been a real success story .

Please..... He is the anti-Christ.

He has done NOTHING to even slow down corruption in his entire government.

He is an empty suit.

For 52 weeks a year he ill-educates the people he is suppose to help get out of poverty. He and his cronies do this purposefully.

Whoa, what happened to Segura's long time stupidity, corruption and firing?

Segura with his buddy LF brought the electrical sector to its knees. Now LF is reneging paying what his government owes.

We are being asked to believe government figures that "prove" the economy is in good shape. I don't see anyone working other than at food carts. The free zones are ghost towns. Those unemployed 1000s don't have new jobs. The pueblo is as uneducated as ever and dependent on government handouts.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

The government has borrowed so many BILLIONS of dollars, that there is no way that we can pay this money back AND provide any sort of public services in the near future.

Oh yeah!!!

If DT were to catalog all of the scandals of his administration this year, there would not be enough space to report anything else. Talk about selective journalism......

juanb, you got it.

DT should have a 'score card' where we can vote to put in in one of three (3) categories.

1) Scandal
2) Borderline Scandal
3) Success

I'd pay to be able to see the numbers at the end of the year.
