Santo Domingo.– The Super Tucano aircrafts that arrived a month ago in the country in order to monitor the Dominican Republic’s airspace and intercept drug laden aircraft, are not in use yet.

According to media reports, the reason why the Armed Forces are still training technicians and pilots prior to operational missions is the lack of full range air surveillance radars, whose purchase is already in the final contract phase.

The country has only radar for commercial aviation in several international airports, with tools that have no ability to detect aircraft flying below 5,000 feet. An estimated 1,200 planes from South America have violated the country’s airspace bringing tons of drugs since 2005.

They are training the same technicians who do such a wonderful job on the OMSA buses to take care of these planes.

Typical and traditional way that the DR Government handle things:

------------ No planning well, No preparation well, No study well --------------

Later on, looking for nonsense excuses and blames this and that.

It appears the Super Tucanos, as everthing else, are just for show they have no serious comitment to eradicate the NARCOS!

NOW this has to invesitgated, what an outrage:

Destituyen al general que apresó a El GringoManuel Emilio Mesa Beltré "El Gringo" fue enviado a una cárcel de extraditables por medida de seguridad

SD. La jefatura de la Policía destituyó al general Miguel de la Cruz Reyna como Coordinador del Programa Barrio Seguro, tres meses después de que una patrulla bajo su mando apresara al narcotraficante Manuel Emilio Mesa Beltré (a) El Gringo a quien se le incautó la suma de RD$5 millones.

The COPS that do their Jobs get canned, lets hear what the "Boy Scout" LIE-onel Fernandez has to say about THIS!

Same as usual. Spend money that is borrowed with no regards for the Dominican people.
Leonel and his Cronies are just lining their pockets with money.

Comment. If the radar was so important to the operations of the Tucano's then why was it not ordered first.

it will ber another 2 years before this radar is installed and operational then the Tucano's will have been parted out for parts and a colonel will retire in a mansion in the Caymans.

Now, now, Jim, what historical evidence do you have that has the least remote possibility of occurring in the Dominican Republic?

What a waste of money. There were much better things to spend that money on. The metro was another perfect example of extreme wasteful spending. You can have the best technology for caching the drug smugglers but as long as the court systems and the enforcement are left in their corrupt state they currently are in it means nothing. That money should have been spent fixing the electrical problems the country has and for better medical and education for the poor. As I always say if we had better leadership and could fix our corruption problems the money saved and located could fix much of what is wrong with our country today. I can only hope for us one day to step in the right direction with proper leadership that has a plan and executes it to once and for all rid our island of corruption.

Those planes will have salt corrosion on them before they ever taxi out....sitting on the tarmac in a high humidity, salt water environment is hell on av-gear.

Just a heads up...the monkeys NASA put in space didn't really fly the rockets...where will LIE-onel hire his fly-chimps from?

This article is full of half truths ..only two of the eight planes have arrived and they did not come a month ago but simply last month ..about 14 December .The media reports have always stated that there has to be training for mechanics and pilots when the planes arrive and that they would work in tandem with radar .. These planes are the best available according to the defence pages and are used extensively for border control in Brazil. The payment has not been made .it is better for these planes to be here so pilots and mechanics can train on them than sitting on a tarmac in Brazil.

The key word in your statement is "executes". Now that is a word worth waiting for. Someone to come in and execute the culprits, preferably on the malecon.

so far about 150 of these planes are in use in latin america and I have not read of one criticism of the planes ... There has been no statement that the planes will be grounded until radars are all over the country ..simply cynical guess work . I have noted that in every site talking about the planes everyone is happy with the purchase ...Colombia has 25 already

I don't believe there is anything wrong with using high technology where we can to help solve the meriad of problems we face. The negative comments we read so often are a reflection of the frustration at the waste and corruption that is so evident day in and day out. To borrow a line from Mark Anthony, "the evil that men do lives after them. The good is often interred with their bones". In othe words we see so much crap day in and day out and when something good happens we can't believe it and assume it must be crap too.

The radars were ordered during the same time frame as the Tucanos. In the world of Military purchases things can get strung out. Some deals happen quicker than others.

The Tucanos are being flown in training flights so they aren't just sitting in the hanger. They just aren't being used tactically yet. in drug interdiction.

all very laughable, when the realities are considered. i fail to see tha point of catching criminals, when they can simply buy their way out of jail. the only guys who really do hard time here are those without money, and you do not need aircraft to apprehend Fausto. i know two English guys who were caught with drugs, illegal guns, and scales in their home. judiciously directed dollars has them walking the streets today, bragging about the efficacy of their contacts. use the tucanos to deliver the mail.

This has always been the way our Government does business: first, they purchase the planes, then they trained the pilots, then they trained the planes technicians, then they purchase the radars, then they trained the radar technicians, then they trained the radar technicians and pilots on how to communicate with each other. Meanwhile everyone involve in this fiasco is making money. This is only a small sample of how committed our government is in protecting it citizens and drug trafficking.

ateo, i am fully aware that Josean is a grown man, and is more than capable of defending himself. but, in the event that you should decide to hurl street level ad hominems in his direction, the least you should do is to attend a course in remedial spelling before exposing to the world that you are a semi literate neanderthal, with the manners of a goat. this is a forum intended for the exchange of ideas, among presumably intelligent people. ghetto antics, such as four letter expletives, are better left at your home. dismissed.
