COTUÍ, Dominican Republic.- Six people were injured by shotgun pellets during protests staged today by workers of the mining company Barrick Gold in Cotuí, who demand the bonuses and respect of their rights, said the spokesmen for the demonstrators.

The victims were identified as Jose Peralta Rodriguez, Alejandro Guzmán, Eliseo Disla, Manuel Jose Contreras and Miguel Garcia, while the sixth preferred anonymity. Garcia said the company executives have been allegedly retaliating against a group of workers who decided to form a union.

Police agents were posted on the bridges that access the mining company and dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas.

Local popular groups joined the protesters, while hooded demonstrators shattered the windows of several vehicles.

Local media report that executives of the Barrick Pueblo Viejo domincana Corp. weren’t available for comment on the incidents.

When these companies go elsewhere then what? No jobs!! These workers with their misbegotten sense of wage entitlement do our nation Great damage. The international image of DR suffers with these violent and unnecessary acts; these acts only encourage foreign companies to go elsewhere, Costa Rica? Or another Central American nation.

was FARP there?
When unemployment is 20% and the country is flooded with Haitian refugees who'll work for porridge, it's a really bad idea to go around organizing labor disputes.

So you are saying that we are supposed to be grateful to BG?

They got a very ridiculous fraudulent contract to be approve from dominican corrupt congressman, so they don't have to pay A D I M E to DR in taxes. .
They are poisoning the earth for generation.
They have poison the miners several time this year.
They have being poisoning the dams and rivers ( a lot of death fishes on the new red waters), by the side of San Francisco rice plantations.
We are poisoning out own land for several generations..
They haven't pay they miners in long time..
In other words the poor people wont have any benefit.. Only illness, and misery..

If you think that BG is that good , why don't you go and work for them in there, and by the way..have a drink of that water ..if you don't believe me..

Dominicans are not Indians no more..
