Santo Domingo.- The “March of the brides” will be staged for the first time in the country today, aimed at sensitizing society on the serious consequences derived from the violence against women.

The event slated to begin 10 a.m. Thursday in the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) has become the symbol of rebuke against domestic violence in the world, and the march honors the memory of the Dominican Gladys Ricart, murdered by her ex boyfriend in Washington Heights on her wedding day, September 26,1999.

March founder Myhosi - Josie- Ashton said in 2001 she had a vision to walk from Ricart’s house in New Jersey to Miami dressed in a bridal gown, and has organized the yearly march since.
