Santo Domingo.- The remaining five Super Tucano intercept planes of the eight bought by the Government, are already in the San Isidro Airbase, where president Leonel Fernandez will officially receive them at 11:30 a.m. today, Dominican Air Force chef Ismael Diaz announced Thursday.

He said the Air Force has 39 pilots trained to fly the planes against drug trafficking and that a shop has been readied for their maintenance.

The Super Tucanos were bought from the Brazilian company Embraer with a loan of more thanUS$93 million from that nation’s the National Economic and Social Development Bank.

WAIT us$93 million for 8 super tucanos is almost 12 millions each? wtf if i'm not mistaking an f-16 cost about 17 million a piece and i'm sure it will intercept drug planes faster and even give our ridiculous air force a well needed make up.

F-16 are about US$15 million, million dollar question will be how easy the Dominican goverment
could buy these airplanes, at least with the Brazilian goverment You don't have the political commitment of getting bulied in case You come across with issues with the American goverment in the near future.

The F-16 is definitely a better, more modern and state of the art airplane but also you have to count the maintenance issues, fuel, etc; on my opinion FAD needs also newer helicopters that
will be more suitable to patrol the border than the Super Tucanos (Embraer).

if it comes to investing, invest in something valuable. if i give you choice to pick a hunday sonata from a bmw m5 which would you pick? C'on bro super tucanos when you can get super jets only in DR. And there's no issues with the american goverment, hate it or love we can fight no one but haiti if it comes to war soo this planes are useless in case of defending ourself.

The Supertucanos are not to be used for war planes, they are simply intercept planes to combat drig trafficking, so for their purpose, they are the right plane since most drug planes are slow planes and the F16s would be inefficient for that type of intercept. I am not sure what the going rates are for the Tucanos, so I just hope DR paid a fair price for them. The U.S though, has historically blocked air craft purchases by the Dominican Armed forces, and even though the Super Tucanos are Brazilia made, it does use U.S. patented technology and the U.S did have to approve its purchase. During the Bush administration, the U.S was totally against the downing of unidentified planes and the Tucanos were delayed quite a bit.
