Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- The Dominican-Haitian border awoke totally militarized today as Border Control (CESFRONT) agents stopped undocumented Haitians from entering the country, while the traffic of those legally registered has also slowed to a trickle.

The agents, troops and other officials searched several houses in Dajabón and detained at least 170 Haitians who said they were trying to reach Santiago, Santo Domingo and other cities.

The undocumented travelers were taken to the Immigration Agency compound in Dajabón to be repatriated to their country, the CESFRONT said.

It said hundreds of Haitians amassed at the Masacre river on the Haiti side of the border early Friday, but were dispersed by a group of men wielding clubs, who also kept their compatriots who have Dominican visas from returning to their country.

According to reports from Haiti, the suspension of the bi-national market by Dominican authorities as part of the anti-cholera clampdown has spurred disputes across the border.

The market grounds are completely empty today as the usual trucks loaded with vegetables, provisions, chickens and eggs are nowhere to be seen, a situation similar in the hotels that are usually full Mondays and Fridays, though their managers say they have no guests.

So they have been letting undocumented Haitians all along? THey stopped just now?

I don't believe one word of this. They are just looking for big bribes to cross the border. They prefer a few large bribes instead of a lot of small ones so they can make the same money off letting a few people pass by raising the bribe price that's all. Good luck finding a Dominican or Haitian guard anywhere on the island that cannot be bribed.

What are they doing about guarding the mountains? It would be good if they kept control of the whole process after the anti cholera stage

The stakes are too high; if cholera reaches the DR's tourist sector, you can kiss whatever economic chance DR has to uplift the nation. So I think that they really mean it this time.

If the triggering factor for closing the border is indeed tourism related, then those in charge will burn in hell.

Aren't the life and health of the Dominican people more important than tourism income?

Greed is a capital sin. Burn in hell.

i have nothing against but i do love the DR and to be honest haiti is a problem. the DR and haiti can not be united as one, we are too different from each other language, culture and even the way we look and act is different and when i say look i'm not only talking about color you can tell a hatian from a dominican from a distance. i bet you that if it was PR and DR sharing the island it would had been united a long time ago because of the similarities we have. haiti is another world and for the sake of the DR the international community needs to step in and make this country functional again.

I dont think that even if haiti, got a funtional economy, rebuild it cities, have social program, have a little less corruption, have an army, have education system, re forest the whole country.. i dont think it would ever change. they are still stock in this set of mine that wont allow it.
If we invade and take over, we are going to have an iraq in our hands, the best possible plant i think i might work is as follow.
What is today refers to as the central plateau of haiti use to be Dominican land, given to haiti in 1929 by Trujillo to keep the haitian off the DR border. i think we should take over that, not by force but divide and conquer, have that province join DR volunteraly. build it infrastruture, cities, education etc, the haitian in the new border would be envy and maybe will change for the better of perhalf not. basically if it work others province of haiti might follow, after that we could give them visa to canada and france.

dominicans are not lazy is just that companies are too smart and haitians represent cheap labor. dominicans will do any job for the right price, and business sector doesn't like that. Sorry man i know haiti is going thru hell but we are not the usa to have 2000000 illegal aliens in our country. CLOSE THE BORDER and see the domincans getting off their ass to work.

Jarabacoa= first of all you are a Haitian and not Dominican. Aunque vienes disfrazado te conocemos bacalao!!!!!!!

You're statement is correct. Those world powers do want some type of unity/they want the DR to be a solution for the Haitian problem. France is indebited to Haiti but they won't do anything help Haiti directly. As a former French colony, France should be the one helping Haiti due to its ties.

THe more I read on the internet and this forum the more I see Haitians wanting DR to be the solution. Haitians demanding the border to be open. Preval stating Haiti's problem is DR's problem.

Why isn't Haiti's problem Haiti's problem? Why don't Haitians look to solve there own problems? Why do Dominicans have to have the burden?

Haitians have always had interest in living or regaining DR territory with out respecting the Dominican people and culture.

I say DEPORT ILLEGAL HAITIANS FROM THE DR LIKE THEY DO FROM USA AND ALL OTHER COUNTRIES!!!!!!!!!!!

Ny4life you are so right. I have been waiting for someone to ask the Haitians to be responsible for themselves. Extremely cheap labor is the reason for Haitian popularity in DR. Extreme corruption is the main reason for all of the problems on both sides of the border. To argue about which group is the hardest worker is a waist of time. As long as both groups are consumed by such high levels of corruption it doesn't matter how hard they work. Some say that the Haitians are harder workers than us then shouldn't their country be the one that's better off.

you are so funny, out of all the dominicans doing business in haiti you mentioned only the prostitutes that shows how ignorant and completely hatian you are. dont forget that a prostitute is a lot like a drug dealer they mess with anybody in order to make a profit. there will be no unification between us we are too DIFFERENT and if the usa, canada, and france want a solution to haiti they need to invest in it or take away all of its citizens, unlike the DR they have resources to deal with them. also dont forget that haiti invaded us more than once during it better days so they cant be trusted, and about the border again close it and deport all illegals if they want to work, give them working visas do your job get paid and then bounce back. that is the way develop countries do it they use us then dump us why do we have to keep you'll. AND FOR YOU INFO HATIANS WORK HARDER THAN DOMINICANS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO CHOICE YOU IGNORANT.

Now lets talk about the Haitians. Stop blaming everyone for your problems...Yes you've suffered greatly at the hands of the French and the Americans but that's not a reason for you to give up and blame everyone for your troubles. You also need to stop the racism. This is one island with two countries and each side seem to think that ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. Look you Haitians need to hold your governments accountable for what they do. The level of corruption in Haiti is what's causing most of the suffering and what's keeping Haiti from advancing for the last 50 years. Haitians need a change of mentality and you also need to stop the racism. Take pride in yourself and the things you do.

THIS IS TO EVERYONE HERE. STOP THE MADNESS. All of you are acting like kids. First of all neither side can survive without the other. Most of the products that the DR produces is sold to HAITI. The Dominican economy would come to a complete halt without the Haitian consumers. Haitian need these products in order to survive. It's a win win situation. Neither one of you are better than the other. Dominicans lets not forget without the Haitian labor, the Dominican Republic would not be where it is right now. It's the Haitian labor along with foreign investors that built the DR. Stop the racism because all of you are black in one way or another. Believe me you are not white. Do some some research and you'll be surprised.

I didn't blame anyone for Haiti's problems, and even if they do close the border out of curiosity doesn't the artibonite river ( which was the river contaminated with the kholera or whaetever) cross with a lake or whatever which is connected to the guayamou river which connects with this like other river or the same one that goes into the dominican republic? So yeah.

West Germany and East Germany's unification are a very different case, they where way better then off economically and still are, the population of East Germany isn't as dense as haiti's to. So don't come up with that BS example because it doesn't work. And if we ever get forcibly unified by Haiti thanks to our pathetic greedy politicians then I'll be part of the group spraying every single damn f*** haitianito I see.

The end of the cold war era brought both sections together, back as Germany. Big difference from the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Unification will never occur i guarantee you that!!!!! Haiti will become a nation administered and controlled by the U.N., and the U.S., and nominally by Haitians in a governmental role. ateo, one day you will understand the difference between patriotism , racism, and xenophobia. there is no component in patriotism which importunes a person to refer to people from other countries in the terms you employ. patriotism, in its most basic form, is a pride in one's own country, and a disposition to defend said country. nothing in the elementary definition calls for aversion to other people. that is not patriotism. to call Haitians savages , and mud cookies, and barbaric, does nothing to further the discourse. it does not speak well of your understanding of the issues. Haiti is decidely in a state of retrogression, and the situation there is dire. sensible, sensitive people, the world over, view the conditions there with concern , and empathy. only the most uneducated, simple minded of cretins could use a condition of distress, such as is currently being occasioned there, as an opportunity to vent their venom on these unfortunate souls.

ALL, ALL Haitians should be quarantined and made to stay in Haiti until further notice. No matter if they have visas or other type of paper.
And remember, MOST Haitians that come to DR defecate everywhere but toilets or latrines, VERY DANGEROUS!

well, i'm more " platano, dominican" than most of you here!!! i 've met haitians in my school and also in miami and in new york.... those dominicans that talk dirty stuff about haiti, haitians are poor educated! i wasnt raised like that, i mean, its pretty embarrasing to see some brothers dominicans talk like that, but again, some still living the trujillo era, they still dont accept leonel fernandez leadership and the fact that we are brothers!

ateo2010!!!!

Cowards are usually seen to have avoided or refused to engage in a confrontation or struggle which has been deemed good or righteous by the wider culture in which they live. On a more mundane level, the label may be applied to those who are regarded as too frightened or overwhelmed to defend their rights or those of others from aggressors in their lives.

Ateo!! you are a mongolico.

The problem is that Dominicans are cowards.

What on earth is stoping Dominicans from closing and sealing their border....cut all cultural/diplomatic and especially business ties with Haiti.

DR has the manpower and military resources to do the deed.

Close the freekin border and stop whining.

jeeeez

The tests confirmed that the strain of cholera in Haiti is the same found in south asian countries such as Nepal, its only. Those Napalense UN soldiers are definitely responsible for this. They need to fix this mess and get away from the caribbean.
