Santo Domingo.- The Justice Minister Radhamés Jiménez today announced the start of a debate to draft a plan to disarm the population nationwide, since firearms are behind 65 percent of the homicides in the country.

Among the proposals debated by the official, Assistant DAs and National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) president Rolando Rosado was to establish an ironclad guarantee so the citizens know that the thugs wouldn’t have access to guns either.

They also agreed on more rigorous procedures to issue firearm permits, on which Monseñor Noel province prosecutor Ángela Frias noted that when she went to request her gun permit, she was told that because of her duties, she didn’t need the doping or psychological test, which she considered unacceptable.

Jiménez said all Justice Ministry officials will be given a draft of the proposed disarmament plan for consensus prior to presenting it to the Interior and Police Ministry and later debate with the churches and civil society. “To reach a consensus on what this plan would be, we aim to make society aware of the fact that 65% of the violent deaths in the Dominican Republic are the result of the use of a weapon.”

I love the idea... but is just not going to happen... a few "good" people will be disarmed and the ganstars are going to keep all their amo.

I do applaud the Bonao prosecutor Angela Frias in coming forward and saying that she was not "required" to take any tests. This gives a sense that there are those out there that know whether they are prosecutors, senators, etc, that they should follow the rules that everyone else has to abide by. That makes perfect sense.

It won't even be tabled as a bill before Congress.

Does anybody have an idea of the taxes the Government collects on imports, licences and renewals of firearms??

They need the milk. They won´t kill that cow.

As for the illegals, keep the border closed. It'll be harder to bring in new weapons, but the existing ones are here to stay.

Possibly the "Government" are getting worried that the population are waking up to what is going on with all the corruption and an armed insurrection is a not to unlikely possibility. No country has ever succeeded in keeping guns away from the criminal element and they must know that! So what is the real agenda here one wonders?

hell no, i do not agree with this proposal. it is sad that 65% of violent crimes in rd are the result of firearms but every single thug in the barrio is packing heat and there is nothing this corrupted police force can do about it. i travel to DR three times a year and i would not leave my house without my 9mm glock, i'm not a fan of guns but little gangsters think about it twice before fcking with me when i'm loaded.

Jose....I live here...not visit here. I commonly go to the barrios at night. Our house in La Romana is in the heart of the barrio. NEVER ONCE....not even at 3am have I been followed, looked at funny, extorted (aside from police) or robbed. And I stand out like a light bulb in the community. You must have a VERY tough and unique community.

I say in theory the plan sounds great, but what it amounts to is nothing more than inconvenient stops along the highway to be asked if I have a gun and then the standard request for money to by them a drink and food.

Have this guy checked out. Who is his associates. What is his real motive for pushing this law of disarming the public. What has happen to him, did his wife get sexed in front of him while at gun point, then to find out it was his wife 's booty call all along? Did he try to set someone up and his boys got the short end of the stick ? Something .... Now had the 65% of those victims armed, I dought that number would exist. This man is against the country and might be part of a ring of criminals looking to disarm the country to make it easier for the criminals and Gov to do what they please....i'M AGAINST IT...Screw you, I'm going to hold on to my TEC-9 and hunting rifle w/ a scope that is safe in my house in La Surza ll , santiago. That house is worth so much that it needs to be protected as well as my family. You don't know who is watching cars leave that area, look for victoms on the return trip in.

The DR should take RESPONABILITY AND PROTECT THE CITIZENS from corrupt officials!!

every man is entitle to their opinions and respect yours. now check this out, when i go to DR i stay in santo domingo, my community ensanche evaristo morales right in between naco, piantini and el millon so i dont think is tough community at all. I'm happy and glad that you feel safe walking around la romana (of course a little town to the east) but in the capital when drive around in a bmw m5 there is always someone looking at you funny and most likely that person is packing something so having mine loaded makes me feel a little better about the situation.

If we as citizen allow this to happen we are screwed, we need guns to protect ourselves from any attempt of a dictatorship, this is just another way of the government taking more control of it's people. I'd rather take my chances with a thug then to one day wake up and have the government controlling my life.
Now they say 65% of the murders where committed with firearms but do they mention that out of that number what percentage are due to corrupt officials or murder for hire sent by the authorities.
There's no way i would feel safe if the only people with firearms were the cops. It's a proven fact they are corrupt, and can't be trusted. next thing you know they will want to go house to house to search for weapons and what would you call that since they are already going into public places to search citizens without any cause. I smell a dictatorship in the making

After visiting Singapore for week, I was able to appreciate how not allowing weapons has had a positive impact in the society. If it succeeded in Singapore, it can be done anywhere.

Not a good idea to disarm the the law abiding public. Australia did it and homicides went through the roof. The bad guys know that they'll have no resistance when they rob and steal.

The criminals will always be armed without exception. I see a hidden agenda.

“Enlightened Progressives” may imagine that disarming the civilian population will move the DR in the direction of Canada or Sweden, but Dominicans aren’t Swedes.

If carried out, it will unleash a reign of criminal terror, and then, ultimately, pave the way for the next Trujillo.

Who will then promptly “disappear” more than a fair number of suitably unarmed Enlightened Progressives.

cbelk99..........................I believe it would be best if you found another site to display your hate. Everywhere I read your post you show ignorance beyond comprehension. I suggest that everyone who enjoys posting their opinion on this site report as "INNAPROPIATE" any statements that crosses the line into racist personal insults.
I do not believe you are DOMINICAN. I have never encountered another such as you. You sound more like a member of a racist organization from the United States.

I wonder how many of those murders were commeted by LEGAL FIREARM PURCHASES ?

I have to ask are those who support this action really support and trust law enforcement ?

Why not just target the drug dealers, muggers, robbers and their illigal weapons.

What about the penal, courts, jails and prisons one can not enforce any laws until it's cleaned up.

Again I ask.....is it any wonder why Dominicans take the law into their own hands.

Most criminals think twice when they don't know who's armed, most criminals target easy prey.

Well let's use logic, LF wants to be re-elected, so do all his cronies; however he knows that if he forces the issue he faces a possible coup and international intervention.

So what does he do? He repeals the right of citizens to carry firearms, he confiascates them and they somehow get to the hands of criminals ( who by day are members of the police force).

He lets the PRD take the gov. and watches them fold under the sky high deficit, large international debt, and rising crime rate. He waits four years ( which he has been using to gain international approval on his plans) come back to the island when they are in a state of frenzy and panic, takes money that he has been stashing away from his previous tenures, runs again LEGALLY, as the solution to the problems. Repostulates himself and the re-incarnation of Balaguer.

Takes out crime with punishing blows, brings backs redadas, and violates more human rights, he taps citizen's phones who have accumualated wealth in ways they

Consider questionable( i.e you didn’t steal it like the rest of us so you must be selling drugs). People are brought up under the pretentious “associasion de malhechores” charge, they repo their possessions , real estate and freeze bank acoounts which later are unfrozen and appoderated by the gov.

He comes back with a hefty campaign fund that he’s been putting together since 98, runs as DR’s saviour. Then takes troops to Haiti to help in the reconstruction effort but in reality he wants to join the two halves so that he can also control the 500 Billion on foreign aid.

Then he sits back in the palace to write his memoirs and laughs at all of us
