The graft uncovered in the agency Bienes Nacionales, just one of the Dominican can of worms...
Santo Domingo.- After 13 days abroad president Leonel Fernandez finds the country and his ruling PLD Party submerged in problems including a serious crime wave.
The Presidency’s Chief of Staff Cesar Pina said upon his arrival the chief executive will convene the Citizen Security Council, while the population complains of increased crime.
As a political leader Fernandez will directly take part in the selection of the Central Electoral Board’s (JCE) Judges, as Senate president Reinaldo Pared himself said the Head of State has his candidates for those posts.
The chief executive will also have to deal with a conflict with his ally PRSC party in the wake of the Senate tapping Felix Vásquez as a member of the National Magistrate Council (CNM), a move that led to the PRSC threatening to dissolve the agreement for the “prank” and “backstabbing” by the Government and the PLD.
Adding to all the problems is the threat by Interior and Police minister Franklin Almeyda to visit Congress with “police troops” to demand more funds in the 2011 Budget, to better fight crime, while the blackouts and other old problems in the electrical sector are more and more untenable and continue waiting by a solution.
And in the wake of rampant government corruption the International Monetary Fund has also suggested several points has proposed solution that are now in the hands of the chief executive, who returned 10:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Is this not the "business as usual" case in the DR?
A newsworthy article would be one whereupon the contrary (crime rate goes down, Dominican Citizenry is happy with the state, jobslessness is undergoing an aggressive reduction rate) is stated. The question is, will that day, in the next 5 years, ever arrive?
Food for thought...

"The chief executive will also have to deal with"
What a joke, LF deals with NOTHING, he does not have the education to do so.
And BTW, LF left when there were the exact same conditions. Transparent, pathologically corrupt morons running every public section of this 4th world cesspool.

You mean " snuck back into the country under the cover of darkness to avoid being held accountable for the disaster we are experiencing during his tenure. And yes, he is better than Hippolito. But that is like saying that you would rather have syphillis than AIDS. Neither is a good option.
Of course, LF's response to any problem is to have a commitee look into the problem. The sentence in the article that begins "The chief executive will also have to deal with" should actually begin " the President will also be avoiding having to deal with......"
If he hasn't done anything, in almost 6 years, about corruption, education, infrastructure, and crime, why would anyone think that he is going to accomplish anything now. He appointed the right guy to run CDEEE but other than that he is just moving the same bums from job to job.

He's gonna find the country exactly as he left it, maybe a little worse.
Nothing to write home about.

Get real dude! Trujillo COULD have solved many problems in DR. You think that his spending close to 25% of the national budget on the military served our nation well? If he had spent that amount, nay, say just 15% per year, DR would have been well educated by the time he was assassinated. According to Emelio Betances, State and Society in the Dominican Republic, Trujillo spent huge sums of the national budget to create the most powerful military in the Caribbean Basin. In 1931 11% of the budget was dedicated to the military, 1936 16%, by 1940 21%, and by 1956-7, 25%! In 1957 an additional 1 million plus on weapons! Trujillo didn't pay the National debt of the DR, as many people believe; he merely transferred it by borrowing internally. Check your history. His twisted reign produced our highly corrupt society of today. Balaguer and the PRD & PLD have helped, too.

what is missing from all these stories of corruption is commentary on public reaction. When I read a story today about corruption in Arizona, I read that the corrupt politician (Richardson) suffered from low popularity. Is there a measure of popularity available here, and how is it affected by these news stories? Anybody know?

I am not a fan but you cannot say that Trujillo didn't help our country. Our Peso was worth more then the dollar at one point. Until you commie scumbags killed him and opened the fence with Haiti. Great job. Ohhh and all the gold Trujillo had for us is now gone? I see.
