Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic.- Residents awoke in panic Tuesday morning after reports that at least two catfish (Gabres) were caught in the stream Maguá, a tributary of the Higuamo river, which meanders the town north to south.

The neighbors say the catfish is harmful to the environment, “because it feeds on other domestic fish, crabs, turtles, birds and animals.”

The captured fish weigh half a pound each and were turned over to the local Environment Ministry Office, which will begin an evaluation Tuesday.

The foreign species would also be in waters of the Guamira and Yabón rivers, and the Paña Paña stream, but how it arrived in the zone isn’t known.

Heriberto Zapata (Cano), who caught the two catfish with a hook and is used to fishing the Maguá river at nighttime, when he saw the rare variety said he was astonished. The fish was caught in the backwater pool known as “Mujeres”, as it passes along the Punta Garza district, part of the town that has around 68,000 inhabitants.

These people are as stupid as they look. If I remember my DR history they also killed manatee because they thought they would eat people.

Idiots pure and simple.

Yeah I thought Catfish were bottom feeders. I don't quite understand what the issue is. A lot of people in DR think they are disgusting for whatever reason, lol. It's kinda funny to me because when you think about it pigs are just as much if not more disgusting...

These Catfish will cause major harm. They will take over prime breeding ground for native fish, Consume their fry and compete for food. this species of catfish is fairly unpalatable and isn't comparable to Native North American Catfish.

Maybe they have destroyed their habitat, and is the reason they are looking for a new one.

u can swim as much as u want. cat fish like all other fish do not feed on humans. fish eat other fish.
most cat fish are not very good to eat. in the states they have fish farms that raise cat fish and other types of fish. these are the ones that are sold in the fish markets. becareful what u eat out of the rivers.

Many catfish have been placed in the unusual and even the oddball category in the aquarium scene, and for good reason. They have adapted themselves to their own environments very well by making multiple use of some of their features. The spinous rays are just one of those items that have more than one use. Their strength and toothed edges on the pectoral fins, used with the one in the dorsal fin, make for a great defense mechanism against animals and humans alike. These make the fish a nasty mouthful. Nile River crocodiles have been found on the banks of the river dead with catfish lodged in their throats.
NASTY MOUTHFUL..... BUT IAM SURE THEY WILL FRY THEM UP, HOPE THEY ENJOY THEIR CATFISH DINNER. LOL.

Sorry folks, but the catfish is NOT an invasive nor destructive fish. Sounds like a bit of overreaction. Best thing to do is cut up some spuds, fire up the deep fryer and try to catch a couple more. 1/2 pd catfish are delicious.
