Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Capital’s “treasured” Malecon is the key for the city’s tourism development and cannot continue as a big trash dump or laird for thugs and prostitutes, said Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster  president Freddy Ginebra.

For that reason he announced his support for the mega-project National District mayor Roberto Salcedo recently revealed, which aims to recover the seaside boulevard and turn it into greater Santo Domingo’s top tourist attraction.

The project’s first stage was set to be finished by yearend 2010, but according to the City Council a RD$350 million loan needed from the State-owned National Housing and Construction Bank has not been possible.

Ginebra regrets that “big treasure” has not been taken advantage of and that Dominicans continue with their backs the sea, and that the capital isn’t sold as it deserves: a grand tourism industry.

He admitted that because of its state of abandon thugs and prostitutes have taken over the zone, which would be solved only by joint actions by the authorities and the private sector, to turn the Malecon into the “pride of the city.

The National District City Council (ADN) demanded that the hoteliers along the Malecon contribute with the development programs to halt the sprawl and maintain the avenue.

In a statement released Tuesday the AND said the Malecon’s many hotels “look the other way with the use of their facilities for prostitution, allowing their guests to take recognized prostitutes, travesties and/or homosexuals to their rooms, to restaurants and other facilities, with the excuse that it’s the right of their customers - mainly foreign tourists.”

Those businesses, the AND states, have spurred the jump in prostitution in the Malecon and other hotels and restaurants nearby.

It notes that the authorities have been left alone in the effort to halt the sprawl and maintenance, although the hoteliers and restaurateurs generate large amounts of trash and directly contribute to the very “disorder” they complain about, such as tolerance  prostitution in the avenue.

The City Council’s statement comes in response to the National Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores) president Julio Llibre, who on Monday complained that the Malecon had been neglected, in darkness, and full of prostitutes and criminals.

Those business should STOP relying on the police and eletrical company to fix they problems.
Hire private security, and fix the lighting yourself, increase the feed of your food and services to pay for this, give the goverment the finger.

My God, can't any Dominican take responsibility.? Hell NO.

What is it with you people? The Mayor of the largest city in the DR saying this crap, what is he 10 years old?

telemeco, I like that suggestions. Stop paying taxes for a government of obvious morons, a police force of obvious morons and an electrical sector that is ONLY a feeding trough for lazy pigs.

Then why have a Goverment. why pay taxes. The uniform must mean something, it will be stupid not to expect the Government and the police force not to do anything, the monies is being siphoned out of your pocket and pump into the BARRILITO. We expect the Gov to do thier job and not point fingers at companies which provide income producing JOBs for the few lucky ones, how else would the Government collect..........

"He admitted that because of its state of abandon thugs and prostitutes have taken over the zone"
It's no one elses fault but the Dominican Governments, their time and attention is consumed by thier lack of honesty.

Salcedo should resign, for just now noticing that the MALECON is the key for the city’s tourism development.

It is a two way street and the mayor and ADN should be careful as to where they point their fingers. The pot is calling the pan black ! The hotels should adopt and enforce measures to prevent criminal actions on their properties and the National District mayor should do the same on the Malecon.

IN actual fact it is not too much of a problem ,,during the day a man may be approached in Conde and at night there are small groups of girls looking for work in a very small part of Malecon and 3 or 4 small strips of Ave Independencia . I think that is the about it -So no big deal either way

be real !!! there is an estimated 500,000 women who work the sex trade here in the DR, that is out of a population of 18 million. Simply put, there are not enough jobs. No matter where you go in this country, unemployment is rampant. Men walk out on their families because they cannot support them. Women turn to prostitution to feed their kids. This is a huge social problem indeed. But, it won't be resolved by the police as these women will have to go underground. I wonder what it is like for a woman to suffer the indignity of having to work on her back just to feed the kids.

problem is on the beach right outside the hotel its like one trash can, and yes the ladies of the night and really u need to very careful going out at night.
if u go to any travel web sites u will read very bad posts about this area from tourists.
all i can say is the trash on the streets and on the beaches speaks for its self.
i was in the kendall area of miami yesterday i was looking real hard but could not see one piece of trash in the streets.
how last week i took a metro bus from pop to santo domingo looked out the window for the whole trip very hard to find one inch of the highway or streets without trash. really not one inch....

the hilton does not own the beaches opr the streets the government needs to maintain these areas.
not a bad idea if the government cracked down on people who do nothing but throw their trash onto the streets and beaches with out any thought given to this.
ok! many will say they dont have a education. how much of a education does one need to know do dont shit and piss and throw your garbage onto the streets?.. not much i would say, they same people say they love the dr.
really!

The biggest bordello is being run by the Marriott Corporation of Bethesda, Maryland, USA. The Jaragua Casino and Marriott on the Malecon have the largest numbers of Prostitutes that work in the Casino and in the Cabanas by the Pool every night.
One wonders why the mayor does not file a formal complaint with both the US Embassy and the Marriott Corp.

dicklejohn ..just to get the record straight , there are slightly less than 10 million people in the DR with about half in the capital . Most prostitutes work from houses and not in the street .Many houses require that a girl has a medical check every month and if she fails then she leaves the house and works on the street ,
But it is not the girls or the gays that are the problem but , as danny points out ,the basura, the rubbish that litters the entire country .

Hoteliers?!, well they suer part of the problem, but mr mayorr why not also blame it on yourself, you are acting slow too much talks little actions.

Why blame the HOTEL? Their guest has a room, as a long as the number of people going in with the guest is reasonable, they shouldn't get involved with who the guest goes up there with.

Too funny, of course it is the tourist fault for prostitutes and thugs:) Wonder about all those cabanas though.
