Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government prohibited Monday the sale of used garments in markets along its border with Haiti to prevent the entry of cholera from Haiti, and whose merchants depend on for income, together with footwear.

Army Chief of Staff Carlos Rivera said Monday that security along the border has been heightened with more soldiers to prevent contagion by Haitians who cross into Dominican territory

In that regard Public Health minister Bautista Rojas affirmed that the ban on the sale of garments is part of the sanitary controls to keep the epidemic from affecting Dominican Republic.

He said though there is no evidence that garments can spread the disease, it’s referable to control their commerce because the hygiene and the way it’s handled cannot be controlled.

Meanwhile in Dajabón and Elias Piña, two of the four border markets, thousands of Haitians from different towns waited for entry since Sunday, but the gates weren’t opened yesterday reportedly because of problems with the official paperwork.

They had announced the measure last year, for protectionnist reasons. However, they postponed its application for one year.

Now they're back at it, using cholera as justification.

At any event, poor people need access to "ropas de pacas". It's better to pay 20 pesos for a cheap T-shirt that 150 for cheap chinese junk.

And many people make a living off of it too.

The old "problems with official paperwork" ruse.

It's actually a problem with the officiials.

The Haitian avalanche has been slightly spigoted for now...The invaders from the west have been defeated again, this time by a microrobe. We the Dominican people we're under assault by the great powers to fuse the island and their efforts have been checked, by a simple tiny parasite. The irony.

There's 10.1 million Haitians in Haiti, make it seem like ALL 10.1 million want to get into DR and that is not true. Some hate DR, some just don't want to leave, or whatever. There's others of course that want to crossover, from a handful to a couple hundred that see better opportunities in Haiti for schooling, work, etc. and they want to take advantage. How many mexicans cross into the U.S. for more opportunities. There's thousands and thousands and thousands of dominicans over here in PR, bunch of them are illegal. We are all human, its about life and survival and where the best place for opportunity exists. We all need to respect each other, life is too short for bullsh*t. U are here one minute, gone the next.
