Santo Domingo.- An unusual display of sincerity by a Government official has  sustained the charges by embattled Jesuit priest Regino Martinez that the military assigned to protect the Haiti border get bribed to allow the traffic of people, drugs and guns.

And although Dominican Republic’s Border Guards (Cesfront) director Julio Cesar Castaing admitted that Haitians cross the border illegally, he stood by his troops. "It’s nothing new because it’s something that’s been happening for a century."

He affirmed that for the troops under his command wage a never-ending war to guarantee border security and make all the necessary efforts within the possibilities. "The necessary effort to control the illegal entry has always been made but that doesn’t mean that isolated cases of the military who accept to be bribed or receive gifts from people who want to violate the law can all be detected."

On Monday newspaper Diario Libre reported that Haitians confirmed paying RD$5,000 to cross frontier to a network which “facilitates" illegal immigration, confirming Martinez’s allegation.

Then I guess it is OK-What is a bribe here or a bribe there, come on now cut me some slack.

Well........... if that is the case, what is the big deal? It is an everything thing at the border. It is business as usual which makes it OK. Now, mind your own business and just look the other way. PLEASE!!!

Explain what you mean by "will continue forever because more then ever both sides need each other badly for their respective survival." LAVERITE.

Many of us see Haiti NOT DR as the nation-state in dire need of survival!

I thaught that I was clear enough to show that despite our differences on the economic level, Haiti is the second biggest export market for the DR products therefore is important for the survival of the DR economy and that's besides all the corruption going on the border and encouraged by the very same people who should prevent it. Also, the DR, although better off then Haiti economically, is still considered a third world country and if you dig a little, you will find out how much poverty exist there. Of course we are in dire need of survival, but you are no exception as far as the poverty level is concern and I've gone through some of your poverty-ridden areas and there is no difference with ours. All that reality just explains the DE FACTO COMPLICITY of both countries that suck on each other at all levels.LAVERITE.

LAVERITE-You right and got your point across without insult. However, I know misery loves company and I feel for you. However, there is one point I will not concur: "...you are no exception as far as the poverty level is concern and I've gone through some of your poverty-ridden areas and there is no difference with ours."

Well, yes it may be true that the DR has pockets of poverty which in some cases is quite similar to those found in Haiti, but not to the same extent and/or the extreme proportions. Remember, production for mud pies continues to have a strong demand in your country, but that industry has not yet reached or is available in Dominican stores. So NO it is NOT the same kind of poverty.

Dominicans are not that desparately hungry that they will resort to eating snacks made out of dirt.

His excuse for the corruption is that it has been going on for a long time? Someone needs to tell him to do his job. He should be speaking to and watching his troops. If he finds corrupt ones arrest them and put them in jail. He doesn't though so he can get his cut of the bribe money as the rest do.

This time we let cholera into the country by being so corrupt. When we let in worse diseases and other bad things our corruption will come back to bite us. Look how bad we look to the rest of the world being so corrupt.

International aid groups should trust any money in corrupt countries hands. It should be handled by the international community directly.

Mr Laverite, let's say Haiti is out the picture, and we don't get the 800 million Dollars we trade with that nation(which by the way, 90% goes to the private sector, the poor barely see some of that money) we still pretty good my friend; the Dominican Economy is a 85 billion Dollars a year economy, and this is without what moves out the books if you know what I mean; of couse we need cheap labor, but don't glorify what we trade with Haiti. Do you know how much we spend a year in healthcare for Haitians living in D.R. legals and illegals alike? and, do you know how much money does Haitian people send to Haiti from D.R.? Im pretty sure is way more than the glorify 800 million.

Guillermone, poverty is poverty and there is no other way to describe it; your people may not be at the level of mud pies, good for you, but they are still poor, right?
Veronica, we do not have an army and it's your troops who encourage the corruption and do whatever they feel like along the border with the approval of their superiors.
DON'T BE SILENT, what you spend on the healthcare for haitians in DR is just a fraction of what you get out of them. So, again, I stick to my theory of the DEFACTO COMPLICITY between the two countries. And if somebody was willing enough to have a productive exchange on this subject, I would be willing to go along.LAVERITE.

Guillermone, clay or mud cake as the media calls it, is full of very important minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium. I would say that those who are eating it on a regular basis do so not because they are hungry, perhaps because of a lack minerals in their diet. If those people were that desperate for food, I have seen cats and dogs, rats, humans, they would have eaten them way before they start eating dirt. Remember, Australians and other nationals have been eating clay for centuries.

Wow...the delusion is incredible!

Eating dirt is a delicacy !! We should all eat dirt
Haitians are not hungry!
Haitians are multilingual ( even the majority illiterate portion can grunt in several languages)
Haitians are intelligent ( of course we can see that in Haiti)
Haitians aided the US revolution (a small contigent sent by their French masters really helped defeat the British empire!)

Haitians liberated South America (another small group who got whipped and returned to Haiti )
Haitians aided DR in the restoration ( They knew with Spain guarding the border the stood no chance of conquering us)
Haitians liberating DR (We had already declared independance and Haiti "helped" us by occupying us and abusing us for 30 odd years bringing with them much of their "advanced" society)

Maybe you should buy some TV time and create an infomercial pushing "mud" as the next wonder food. It is full "of very important minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium" as the best way to solve nutritional deficiencies in modern diets of advanced societies. In fact for every mud pie or a dozen dirt cookies purchased, you will give them completely free, as an added bonus, a liter of urine to wash it all down. And why not, after all urine also has some curative qualities. Anyway, give it a thought, you might just make a few millions $$$$.Try it, you just never know.

jarabacoa-Just like the Jews, black Africans are the only two groups who have been enslaved as people. Jews failed God and for 40 years wondered the desert as punishment for their wicked and ungrateful ways, suffered 400 years of slavery in Egypt. All the times the Jews were captured by another nation such as the Assyrians, Babylonians or Persians, it was always a chastisement from God because they were committing Idolatry and other sins.

In similar ways Haitians descend from Ham the father of black people and he and his descendants were cursed to be slaves because of a sin committed against Noah. This might in part explain the reason for the constant tragedy of the Haitian people. History has shown Africans and their descendants appear to be destined to be servants as fulfillment of biblical prophecy. However, there is redemption and people of color will not be subject to tragedy for the rest of eternity, if and only if, they change to a more pure upright way of life.

No matter how Haiti is today does not change history.
Less than a decade after its independence, Haiti, the second republic in the Americas and the first black independent nation in the world, began to help its neighbors in South America to gain liberty as well. During Alexandre Petion presidency, Simon Bolivar "the Liberator" came to Haiti to seek help for his struggle to liberate his country Venezuela from Spain. Petion gave Bolivar: money, weapons, ammunitions and even Haitian volunteer soldiers to help him fight for freedom. The only thing Petion asked in return was abolition of slavery in all the territories that he may later help liberate. Simon Bolivar with the help of Haiti proclaimed Venezuala independence in 1812 and truly liberated: Colombia in 1819, Venezuela in 1821, Ecuador in 1822, Bolivia and Peru. It is even said that Bolivar had promised to Petion that as a gesture of gratitude that he will include part of the red and blue of the Haitian flag in the flag of the count

the countries that he will gain independence for with Haitian help. Thus the reason for the red and blue in the flags of: Venezuela, Columbia and Ecuador. History even reports that both the Venezuelan and the Colombian flags were made in the port of Jacmel, Haiti. However, Haiti the father of the Pan-American movement was later bad mouthed by his jealous neighbors, who spread the words that: Haitian leaders had vision and ambition to create a black empire in South America, hence Haiti became a de facto outcast, and its people would experience a great deal of injustice and set back as a bitter reward for its good deed for freedom and liberty.
After several battles, Bolívar had to flee once more and in 1815 he took refuge in Jamaica from where he wrote his Jamaica Letter. That same year, Bolívar traveled to Haiti and petitioned its president, Alexander Sabes Petión, to help the Spanish American cause. In 1817, with Haitian help, Bolívar returned to the continent to continue fighting.

Indian/Taino slaves were the worst and the reason their workforce did not succeed. They could not be enslaved in large numbers because they could not hold up to hard labor, too readily succumbed to European disease and were too wedded to freedom to allow anyone to own them. Indians were traded as defective merchandise, masters quickly got rid of them, sold for a discount at a fire sale because few wanted them. With the proceeds, the capital from selling Indian slaves was used to fund plantations and purchase additional Africans slaves instead, until eventually indian slavery phased out with little to no market demand.

History tells us that throughout the ages slavery was condoned as a legitimate social system, practiced by people from all nations as an accepted institution. In fact although at a lesser scale, it is well documented, slavery is still well and alive today. However, we do not include them because the numbers are too insignificant as the case of native indian enslavement pales in comparison to the savagery of the black African slave trade.

It is only African and Jewish slavery which have had a trancedental impact on the world, in history and society. No other two groups of people were singled out exclusively and specifically targeted as a prime commodity in the slave industry. Taino slavery played no significant role that would transcend time and space. Slavery was the black Holocaust of the past.
