SANTO DOMINGO. -  In a repeat of previous debacles with the census, the talliers hired to conduct this decade’s population and housing count slated to begin at 8 .a.m. today haven’t hit the streets claiming they’ve yet to be paid.

The impasse prompted Statistics Office (ONE) director Pablo Tactuk to convene a meeting of the Census Advisory Committee to analyze the situation that threatens the highly promoted count.

News source eldia.com.do reports most residents in several barrios including Cristo Rey, Simon Bolivar, Las Cañitas and Villa Carmen await to be counted, but the census takers are nowhere to be seen. It quoted El Dique Neighborhood Board president Jorge Hernandez, who said that in the barrio Los Guandules “the Census, by this time, is a failure.”

Some people trained as supervisors said they have yet to be paid and refuse to work.

Eldia.com.do adds that ONE’s sent a letter to the Presidency requesting an additional RD$565 million to conduct the Census, but the money hasn’t been disbursed.

We are a bad joke.

"requesting an additional RD$565 million to conduct the Census" That means he wants an EXTRA $565million. I sure would like to know how much he got already, and more importantly, where it went.

And if these funds are really needed, maybe the government would have it if it put up a few less subltle reelection billboards, bought a few less jeepetas, or allowed the President and ALL OF THE LEGISLATORS less "discretionary" funds. Although if that were to ever happen there would be enough for everything that we need.

And by the way, it is a law that 4% of GDP is supposed to go to education. This is not a choice situation. The law says that we must give 4% to education. LF and Bengoa act as though this is something that they "should do" if they feel like it. NO DAMN IT, IT IS THE LAW. Unfortunately, like most laws, the rich obey the law only when it suits their purposes.

Another example of corruption stealing the publics funds and rotting away at our society from the inside. I hope the major drug cases recently can bring some big political and military names into the spotlight internationally. Maybe if the US can get those names and request these people be brought to justice in the US would be a nice start. Let LF try to explain why his corrupt friends should not be sent to the US and put in jail. I would love for this day when the US DEA tells LF send us your friends or we will come take you away too.

Wait! They didn't even take the first head count and want their pay before they actually work?!?!

Maybe we should get some Spanish speaking Haitians to carry it out, since they're the only ones that work before the demand pay for services in the DR...

Who gets paid before they work? Most of us work 40 - 80 hours (1-2 weeks) before being paid! They should be paid on the number of people that they actually see and collect the information from... and the people should sign that they actually gave that information!!! If one eager worker meets 75 households in one day, he is paid $$$ x 75. If a lazy worker meets 10 households, he is paid $$$ x 10. The signature of the people is the proof that it was done.
I could just imagine some sitting at their kitchen table and filing in the information of people they know instead of going out!!!
