Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- At least one Haitian was injured by a bullet to the chest fired by Dominican troops when a group his compatriots attempted to cross into Dominican territory violently near noon today.
The injured was allowed to cross the border and taken to the emergency room in Dajabón’s hospital, while the other Haitians were taken to clinics on the Haiti side. Officials of the Border Guards (CESFRONT) immediately expanded the military border patrols after the incident.
The incident, reportedly in retaliation to the confiscation of garlic from two women who brought it from Haiti, led to the torching of trucks owned by Dominicans after they crossed previously loaded with merchandise , and the smoke on the other side of the Masacre river was visible from Dominican territory.
The confrontation began when amid the market’s din of hundreds of vendors, a group of Haitians violently burst in hurling stones at the soldiers responded with gunfire, sending Haitians scurrying back to their country and the Dominicans fleeing the zone.

The Haitian government should move some of its forces to the border to help with security. This is getting out of hand. ScandiViking,
While some posters have stated harsh and in some cases racist sentiments to attack Haitians, there exist an honest and defensible position for Dominican Sovereignty. Yes, the Dominican Republic has a multi-racial character; and it has many blacks in its mix. However, to state so DOES NOT make the on-going, until recently, massive movement of Haitians into the DR a passive issue. If Norway and Sweden had the great differences in living standards that exist between DR and Haiti, 6:1, or so, do you honestly think that the better off side's people would not object to the growing illegal traffic into their homeland? What people like Pepe32 and others point out is merely to remind people, especially those unfamiliar with the issues, that there are significant and VALID reasons for this growing sentiment on the part of many Dominicans. Racism is NOT the sole engine that drives this process. There are Nationalistic and Cultural characteristics at the core.

Some have stated that IF DR were as poor and in such a mess as Haiti, then it would be Dominicans moving towards Haiti. Fine, but the FACTS are that the REALITY of the situation IS NOT and has not been the case HISTORICALLY. The encroachment has always been from West to East, and NEVER from East to West! Go the the history texts. The French created the hugely profitable BUT human consuming Monster Slave society that would become the core of the Haitian State and Nation. The French used the most brutal and calculating schemes to draw the last little morsel of profitability from the massive waves of slaves brought from Africa. The French deforested the Haitian or Western side of the island, and after they were forced out, the ensuring Haitian State and Nation continued this mad process until today we have a Nation devoid of something like 98% of its once forested landmass. The DR had no hand in making this terrible situation in Haiti, and many Dominicans don't feel obligated!

Yet, many Dominicans understand that Haiti needs to right her ship IF the island is to ever find an acceptable semblance of peaceful co-existence. And many Dominicans are willing to entertain notions such as migrant working Permits and the like that establish an organized and systematic order of doing business. Not the chaos and disorganized ways thus practiced. So, if this current border arrangement where apparently the terms have shifted to stronger control over illegal transit is codified by actual practice and adherence, a better outcome for all is in place. Hopefully the new President of Haiti will be sworn in next month and the 10 billion dollars will really start to flow into Haiti. Haiti needs to find her Identity and address her core issues; No one can give it to her.

I keep hearing comments about the deforestation in Haiti. Nobody ever comments on how to stop it. Having lived in the DR for a long time and having worked some in Haiti and was there for the earthquake I have a comment. It appears to me the problem of burning charcoal to cook was solved in the DR some time ago by subsidizing the price of propane gas. It is now cheaper and easier in Haiti to cook using charcoal. It looks like though after flying from the DR to PP that this may be coming to and end--there are no more trees. But the Haitians are now over in the DR cutting trees----big problem for the DR. If somebody wants to really address the deforestation issue, aid agencies should give away propane cookers and the gov. of Haiti should make propane available and subsidize the price to the point where it is cheaper to use propane. I know this is a cultural thing that would take a long time to solve. I know I should mention the laws here against cutting live trees.

Anyone cutting our trees should be shot !! Dominican or Haitian .We cannot allow the Haitians to do on our side what they have done in theirs nor do we have the resources to fix Haiti .The only logical solution as far as DR is concerned and in our interests would be to seal the border, deport all the illegals and then....we could analyse our labour needs and issue work permits for those we decide to allow in.!

There is SO much hate speech and derogatory comments against Haitians its unbelievable. So many people act as if Haiti has just bumbled along and never been able to do anything good, but seem to forget that Haiti fought for and WON its Independence unlike other Nations where the independence was granted after years of concessions and political swooning. But that independence came with a hefty price - Haiti has been in debt for SOOOO long, then after that other Nations tried to impose their Political influence on Haiti which it also rejected. So Haiti is not in poverty because the people are incapable, or inferior or savages, but rather it is unique in its history as an independent nation. If the shoe was on the other foot the Dominican Republic would be in the EXACT same situation. What Haiti needs now is help. Its not about who is to blame, or whose fault or responsibility. Its simply the decent thing to do to help your fellow man - regardless of 'who' or 'what' they are.
