SANTO DOMINGO.- The Chamber of Deputies on Monday resent the bill for the 2011 Budget to the bicameral commission, as proposed by the deputies Ramon Rogelio Genao and Pelegrín Castillo and with a rift of the ruling PLD legislators, who supported the motion and crossed party lines.
The session was being held as organizations grouped in the Dignified Education Coalition staged a protest in front of Congress, who celebrated the decision. The voting to resend the Budget to a commission was 87 for to 86 against.
Yesterday’s development is the first sign the three weeks long protest for 4% of the GDP for education is having an impact, and defies president Leonel Fernandez, who last week vowed that the extra funds would not be available, “even if the demonstrations jump and kick all they want.”

The President has made a very big error of judgement here and this issue will really bite , thankfully, into any plans he may have had to seek re election .
The people in the street have now found an issue that binds them together, regardless of their political alliances , and poco por poco , I think this battle will be won as long as people protest within the law and do not alienate supporters by stupid actions .
I am amazed that the Church has not come out and supported this just cause .

I just don't understand why some much problem and issue to pass a bill that will bennefit the country and the future generation with well and highly educated people. But it seen to me like the morrons of LF and it crews of clowns that running the country would rather have a bunch of Brutos to keep living the old fashion way. Shame on our own people that refusing to make this happen. this shouln't have been an issue but instead a number one priority.

It's about machismo.
They said it wouldn't reach 4%, and it won't.
What, officials giving in to citizen action?
Democracy has been defined as the right to elect representatives. Once they're up there, nobody has a say.

@Danny
The ancient Greeks tried that, government by the people. They would all gather up in the Agora, and it became a total mess. Nothing was getting done.
Enter Dracon, the one that gave his name to Draconian. Ancient days Trujillo. Things changed for the better.
Democracy is a dream.

I think the lack of support for education is very simple and I'm sure that behind closed doors Lionel is saying, "But If they get too smart they won't vote for me".
