SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez on Wednesday proposed allocating 400 million pesos from the 2011 Complementary Budget to Education, with which the contribution to the sector would climb to RD$10 billion.
The President’s proposal came during the meeting with representatives of the Government’s Social and Economic Council, as well as with those of the Coalition for a Dignified Education, which demands 4% of the Gross Domestic Product allocated for education.
If the proposal is accepted, 2.75% of the GDP would be allocated to education, said monsignor and PUCMM university headmaster Agripino Núñez, who called the meeting a step forward.

2.75% of the GDP for education is an insult to the Domincan public that has suffered enough of government waste. The law says 4% .... and that is what education should get. if not more.
Sell the Super Tucanos, sell all the tax free gov/t jeepetas, cut back on all the excess wages and entitlements for the politicians, and use the proceeds for education.

The Constitution states 4%! I can't say I am shocked though I have yet to see anything done about the school milk which got all those kids sick. LF and the rest of the corrupt drug dealing politicians need to be held accountable for their actions. Everyone who voted for LF well you got what you voted for. We need a new President who is for the people not himself.

Hi: On the top of the list of best educational systems in latinamerica you will find Uruguay.
If you don't believe me, go and search about the latest rates international organizations like UNESCO have published about Uruguay I can tell you that the quality of the education has always been excelent, just there's no money enough for supporting it too much. But in Uruguay Public education is as good as private and University is for free, I mean you don't need to pay for studyin in state University because it's for free and for all who can pass highschool. Also he level of the education is high; you can see that when you find that several doctors from uruguay (who studied all their careers in Public Education, even public university) have achieved great level outside Uruguay in developed countries that are at the head of research and technology such as Canada or countries from Europe.
I advice you to search in UNESCO for the latest report about education in latinamerica.

In other words..the Fernandez administration is getting ready to catch up to the rest of latin America on spending on education...the latin America of 20 years ago!!!! Unbelievable.

To save the Dominican people, Fernandez must be removed from office. No one wants bloodshed, but the man is a traitor, criminal and fraud. Impeach him, or remove him for being ineligible to hold the Government office.

Treason and Bribery - two reasons to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Fernandez.
“The betrayal of trust” and “the offense of attempting by overt acts, to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance”.
“The act or practice of giving or taking a bribe”. Bribe - “Money or favor given or promised in order to influence the judgment or conduct of a person in a position of trust”.

THE KEY WORDS FOR PRES. LEO
ADVANCE EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEMS.
Uruguay has traditionally been better off than many other countries in South America, and is known for its advanced education and social security systems and liberal laws governing social issues such as divorce.
It was among the first nations in Latin America to establish a welfare state, maintained through relatively high taxes on industry. The system, which had increasingly strained state finances, was reformed in the 1990s

Does anyone know if LF stated that the goal was to achieve 4% by x years time? Going from 1.9 to 2.75 is not bad, of course we all would like to see him go to the Constitutional mandated level of 4%. So has he stated 2.75% for 2011, 3.5% for 2012 and finally 4.0 % of PIB for 2013? I would like to see the population and citizenry demand that all the major political Parties sign an oath to this timetable. Perhaps, extending the percentage dedicated from 4% to say 6% by 2015. And making 6% the Constitutional Law of the land. As Cibaeño75 stated, 2.75% get's DR back to the level of expenditure of 20 years AGO for Latin America. We can certainly do better than emulate that record!! An educated populace will bring many desirable changes and unleash heretofore unrealized human talents and creativity now smothered by lack of educational opportunities.

I am all in favour of much more money ,,say 6% of GDP being spent on education at all levels ..but I have a few questions
Just where in the constitution does it mention that 4% must be spent on education _??
As I read it the court refused to give any restraining order against the politicians approving the budget and it appeared a very clear cut decision so why go to court if you are going to lose ?? Surely the legal advisors of the protest groups must have seen this would not win or did they just want their fees .
The protest groups must come up with some better tactics to win this important battle and I am sure calling Leonel names will not be of any use except to make people feel a bit better ,,far better to call him names when he is appearing with some important ,,that may affect his ego a bit .
People must be clever and tactical to win this battle.
