Santo Domingo East.- Santo Domingo province prosecutor Perfecto Acosta revealed Sunday that the Justice Ministry proposed plan to disarm the population nationwide will start in early 2011.
He suggested an amendment to Law 36 on the Bearing and Possession of Weapons, to allow only possession to start the disarmament and to specify where the confiscated guns are to be disposed.
He said that these weapons should be subjected to smelting or some form of incineration, to prevent a recurrence to return to foreign hands, following the seizure, interviewed by journalist Federico Mendez on Santo Domingo TV,
Acosta said another alternative is to dump them at sea, as done in Puerto Rico, in places where they cannot be salvaged, but noted that he prefers melting them.
He said the use of illegal guns needs to be strongly tackled, because in his view it’s people which are being killed with them. "We’ve been in favor of a general disarmament in the country, but only in a gradual manner.”

Australian Gun Law Update
Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
Written by: BASTA, 20 Dec 2010 12:08 PM
From: Dominican Republic, =Ghetto/Legalize Drugs
The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed ++++ upThere has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

Look at this guys suit, an educated man would have gotten one that fits and this shlep is making a decision on disarming the public.
A true poll is needed, disarm the public and the crooks will run freely. Not everyone has a public payed servant acting as a bodygaurd. Until the government is cleaned up itself and reconizes that corruption is a problem, its not recommended to disarm.
Hold on to your PISTOLAS, DR , we're going to need them.

Waste of time. Corrupt police and other officials will resell the guns taken from honest citizens to criminals. Then the criminals will all have guns and honest citizens will need illegal guns to protect themselves making themselves criminals as well.

Wow ! I already feel safer by his tough words.......another prosecutor with too much time on his hands. Why not really make a name for himself by starting to inforce the laws already on the books to the letter of the law regarding possesion of stolen and black market firearms.
I'm reminded...."An armed society is a polite society", "a safe society is one where the criminals don't know who's armed and would face armed resistence from their victims" and my favorites "if guns were outlawed only outlaws would have guns" and "fear a gov. that fears its citizens".
Sounds like he needs a refresher course on the meaning of the words LEGAL vs. ILLEGAL ?

We should also ban knifes, many robberies on street are done with knifes. I've been mugged twice with knifes and a good percent of friends that have been mugged were also with knifes.

Great...more stops along the highway for the same old stuff. I drive a few times a week to La Romana. I can be as little as one hour between the first checkpoint ( no one officially dressed or looking the part) and when I return to the checkpoint.
Guess what...I get the same treatment every time.....BOTH WAYS!!!!
Any guns? No.
Any weapons...no.
OK...let me see your ownership, insurance and license. No problem.
A long stare....look at the documents one more time. Oh...my license does not match the ownership...my wife's name. Now we have a problem...I cannot drive someones car apparently...even with my wife in the back seat. What a pile of stupidity.
I watch these street bandits...never do they pull over P.O.S cars...only the ones that still have the same colour on every panel and working lights and a windshield.
I really cannot accept the government's word, when in fact all this is is a shakedown of expats living on the island. See it way too often.

I have had a variety of experiences now from a direct request for a regalo to ludicrous questions as to the state of my health ..and from a mere handshake to a complete search . I have had them place their rifles on the window frame of the car to actually putting the rifle on the bonnet as they looked at my papers ..and I am sure one officer was no more than 17 or 18 .

From: United States, Nyc, NY
the Obama administration took its first major step in a plan to ban all firearms in the United States. The Obama administration intends to force gun control and a complete ban on all weapons for US citizens through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. By signing international treaties on gun control, the Obama administration can use the US State Department to bypass the normal legislative process in Congress. Once the US Government signs these international treaties, all US citizens will be subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments. These are laws that have been developed and promoted by organizations such as the United Nations and individuals such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. The laws are designed and intended to lead to the complete ban and confiscation of all firearms.

From: United States, Nyc, NY
Infowars.com -->Pt.1 The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened. Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws. Does that mean Obama is telling the truth? What it means is that there will be no publicized gun control debates in the media or votes in Congress.
From: United States, Nyc, NY
Pt.2 We will wake up one morning and find that the United States has signed a treaty that prohibits firearm and ammunition manufacturers from selling to the public. We will wake up another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that prohibits any transfer of firearm ownership. And then, we will wake up yet another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that requires US citizens to deliver any firearm they own to the local government collection and destruction center or face imprisonment.
This is not a joke nor a false warning. As sure as government health care will be forced on us by the Obama administration through whatever means necessary, so will gun control.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
The figures given by BASTA are false ,,they are simply propaganda figures from a disreputable gun lobby in Australia ..pity that he did not give his source .There are independent figures from several university studies that show that less than 5.5% of the population has guns ,more than 75 % of guns used in crimes are unregistered ,,the use of guns in suicides has fallen dramatically and all in all Australia has a very low level of violent crime
