Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez on Monday again sidestepped insistent questions on whether he will seek a third straight term in office, and if he would try to reform the Constitution for that purpose, but noted that the nation is sovereign, a term he has also used in previous occasions.

Questioned for around two hours by around 30 media directors and opinion makers in the National Palace, he said there are interpretations of the Constitution that would allow his reelection but refused, however, to say which one is his view.

Although Fernandez stressed that he would never promote an amendment of the Constitution for a third term, he did leave open the possibility of an open referendum or similar mechanism to present his candidacy.

The chief executive affirmed that he’s dedicated to governing “for now” and not in campaign, and that it will be next year when his party that will choose its presidential candidate.

He added that despite the Constitution’s several interpretations on reelection, he’s not paying attention to the topic.

He is still testing the water which I hope will remain too hot for him..He has had sufficient time as President and should not be seen as trying to manipulate his way around the constitution that he himself introduced

Our very own President for life? Sounds like Idi Amin and Papa Doc Duvalier. Doesn't pass the Horse manure smell test; can't imagine this foray could withstand some form of constitutional muster. essentially, the people are being disenfranchise. Tea party in the Ozama River in the not too distant future?

They should allow him to amend the constitution via a popular referendum. One condition after amended it will only take effects for subsequent presidents but will never apply to him.

That will be impartial if he is so interested in extending the times a president can run for office.

9. Correction
In Thursday's news digest, DR1 incorrectly reported that truckers should keep to the left lane. It should have read right lane, as was observed in a commentary on the news in the DR1 forums

IN THE LEFT LANE..... NOT IN THIS LIFE TIME WILL THIS HAPPEN..
WISH IT WOULD..
MANY LIVES WOULD BE SAVED IF THE TRUCK DRIVERS WITH THEIR VERY SLOW MOVING TRUCKS LOADED TO THE TILT WOULD ONLY TRAVEL IN THE LEFT LANE AND LET OTHERS PASS IN SAFETY. WHY SHOULD THEY THOUGH?

Any driver in the left lane can stay there if he so chooses.

He doesn't have to move to the right to allow faster moviong traffic to pass.

He got there first.

At last that's the way it works here.

Ha ha ha, Mr FERNADEZ is testing the Dominican democracy. I've already seen that in other countries of Latin America. Hails to Lula which hasn’t been bit by the same virus. Just let the time to time and el pueblo will decide.

Hahaha Right lane, Left lane, what the hell is the difference here. They usually block both lanes to chat.

No respect for others, No respect for laws, no respect for NUTTIN. Classic Dominican attitude. Saw some guy arguing with a cop who wanted him to ride on the correct side of the road for the direction he was going in. I was laughing my ass off. This guy just didn't give a crap about what the cop said. CLASSIC Dominicano. You all need a Trijillo. Most of you can't act civilized without one.

Wonder why Manny Z is getting free accomodations these days ? Nah , Slick Willy in Haiti has nothing to do with Hugo , FIDEL and Ortega trying to suck off Leo in exchange for his loyalty in a Leftist region . Privatized beaches in Cap Cana and Casa de Campo , women getting locked up for walking on the streets after 9.00 pm in Sosua for prostitution in a country where its legal ? No way would Leo ever do anything to violate the constitution .
