Santo Domingo.- Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez yesterday called the weaknesses in the handling of waste and treatment of water a “tangible threat” situation which is of major concern amid the increase of cholera cases in the country.

“Unquestionably there are many weaknesses in the handling of waste waters; regrettably no sector of Dominican society shows concern about it,” the official said, quoted by news source elcaribe.com.do.

He said to deal with that issue the heads of all Government agencies met last week to deal with the topic of water, and coordinate all aspects of the sector. “But major weaknesses still persist. It’s a tangible threat, the fact that different waste water treatment plants aren’t working make it more of a threat now than we have this issue of the water-borne disease, which is cholera.”

The Environment Minister said despite the Government’s effort to halt the sanitary threats of untreated waste water, no initiative would have the reach or effect if the political class, non-government organizations and the population as a whole don’t show an interest in knowing what occurs with the waters used in their daily lives. “I thank the media’s effort to directly know which plants work and which ones don’t, because they alert us in the Environment Ministry, the Public Health Ministry, Inapa, CAASD (Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewage System  Corporation  )and all corporations on how to do things better.”

The official’s warnings on improperly treated waste waters comes just days after CAASD director Freddy Perez called the deterioration and insufficient operations of the capital’s sewage treatment plants a “veritable time bomb,” an warning an urban planner made several years ago about the upscale sector Naco, which has no sewage system.

JimHarrington, Was right.

Lets just hope that the clown of LF would do something about it right of way, not like he did with the border, waited to the last minutes to close it.

9. Correction
In Thursday's news digest, DR1 incorrectly reported that truckers should keep to the left lane. It should have read right lane, as was observed in a commentary on the news in the DR1 forums

IN THE LEFT LANE..... NOT IN THIS LIFE TIME WILL THIS HAPPEN..
WISH IT WOULD..
MANY LIVES WOULD BE SAVED IF THE TRUCK DRIVERS WITH THEIR VERY SLOW MOVING TRUCKS LOADED TO THE TILT WOULD ONLY TRAVEL IN THE LEFT LANE AND LET OTHERS PASS IN SAFETY. WHY SHOULD THEY THOUGH? 1,OOO OF DOMINICANS DEAD EACH YEAR ONLY BECAUSE OF THE TRUCKS AND BUSES.

You could smell the sewer smell in SD when you step out of your vehicle coming from Bonao... Once you leave SD to go back to Santiago, open all of your windows and get some real fresh air from Bonao and up!

Matador,

You are such a Benedict Arnold. Do you understand the difference between analytical opinion and the art of smear tactics to discredit opponents?

If not, you need to learn how to read at a higher level because your comprehension is at a extremely low level. Unfortunately, you were not able to comprehend that Jim Harrington openly boasted about the government never taken the sewage issues serious . But Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez has taken the issue into the forefront , which proves Jim Wrong.

Jim Harrington also openly lied about our rivers and oceans of being currently infested with cholera, which we all know is a lie at this present point in time.

By the way, Do you have a terrible empty feeling in your skull?

Now look who's lieing, Elsuavecito, I never said that the rivers are infested with cholera. What I said was that the rivers in the DR are an excellent breeding ground for cholera based on the coliform count found in them. Suavecito, you are an idiot.

ElSuavecito, you lying POS spin doctor wana-be.

Jim mentioned the key component to cholera’s epidemic potential.

Typical Dominican attention span. None.

You government puke can white-wash the possibility of an epidemic, but intelligent people will not listen. You are only condemning your poor and uneducated.

As I have said earlier and received bad comments there are so many pockets of towns which have no proper sewage and people going to the bathroom right into their local water supply. This is going to make stopping the spread of cholera impossible. We need to address our sewage and littering issues throughout the country and now would be a good time.

Of course that would mean less money in LF and his corrupt cronies pockets so don't expect any results.

Any official who does nothing when our children are being poisoned by meals provided by the government is a disgrace.

This article is primarily talking about the problems of the sewerage treatment plants, some of which are not functioning and the fact that the untreated sewerage poses a potential problem .
Jim H listed a number of rivers which he said are contaminated with faeces and breeding grounds for cholera .Other people have pointed out that there are any number of polluted rivers in every city but who is silly enough to drink from them .he has also said that the DR is doing nothing about the cholera problem .
What we know is that Jim H will say anything and everything unfavourable against the DR so what is new here ...All it really says is the people leave this problem of waste water disposal and that the departments have had a meeting and are aware of the problem . I wonder if all the huge apartment buildings have large sewerage pits that need regular emptying or another system .

Why has Jaime David now taken up this challenge after soooo many months as Chief of Medio Ambiente ?? Could it be that some International Environmental Company has made a proposal to install & build waste treatment plants around the country for several million dollars (10-30% commissions)?? Future earnings for his family members and querida gets a new Range Rover? This issue should have been addressed years ago...

ateo, it's not because people are in thir 40s, 50s, 60s that they are bound to be fired. What is lacking is a general global vision of basic emergency services for the well being of the population and transparent and honest leadership. A "slam down the foot government" towards any / all irregularities. Sorry but this does not come with age, nor a university degree! But this is what is needed for the country and to regain the international respect that COULD be there.

HUHHUM , and is there anybody in the country '' educated enough or trained in this area of expertise '' that can step up to the plate and carry thier people into the sunset on a white horse ? Possibly ,yes but unlikely . As Ive said on other posts , alot of what may appear to us as incompetency or inability may be nothing more than personal prioritys . The general attitude of this administration is '' As long as our bills our paid this month and there doesnt appear to be any Haitian hood Willies sleeping under our back porch tonight , '' f*** everyone else and the horse they came in on .
