SANTO DOMINGO.- Again the First Lady, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez, was the victim of a barrage of criticism and insults among her detractors on Twitter, who questioned the Government’s spending on education.
The debate spanned from Saturday and to Sunday night with one of Cedeño’s first tweets in her account ‘margaritacdf’: "Education breaks the intergenerational circle of poverty and inequality,” with one of the first responses by the user ‘negriDR’: " Mrs. first lady, what happens when the family does its part, but doesn’t have resources so its children an go to good schools?”
The response set off a run of dozens of tweets, as much to the First Lady’s supporters and critics, where a lack of respect was evident, prompting Cedeño’s: " I spend my time to twitter because for me you are important and I want for you to have all that you they have need, but it seems that I am losing my time."

She cannot handle the flack. She is an elitist. "Why spend money on education when I can have a new De la Renta wardrobe" states Margarita "La chuleta" . Do the people thinbk she can handle the pressure as President, if she cant even deal with a little criticism on Twitter?

I've been following this education fight loosely via TelenoticiasRD on YouTube. All I can say is sad..... shame on Leonel and all of the politicians stirring the RD in the wrong direction. Only a tyrant would want to wield power over an uneducated populace. So much easier to maintain power in the hands of the few without being held accountable by a nation's people.

Speaking of elections, a Dominican friend of mine once told me that there are no televised, national debates on real issues during election campaigns in Quisqueya. I didn't believe it at the time. When I'm on the island I don't have much time for TV. But is this true? Are political hopefuls making it into office without actually showing the Dominican people that they have a clue about governing? Without showing they have a grasp on the issues that impact Dominican families daily? Are there primary elections? Can every Dominican vote? I'm just curious about the value and significance of the vote in the RD and how the Dominican populace use their votes to motivate politicians to get off of their backsides and serve their constituents.

i am firmly of the belief that the lack of educated people in the DR is a planned circumstance. it is not happenstance , nor accident. it is planned. that is the way that the powers that be want it to be. the lack of attention to information and education is orchestrated by those in charge, who want a populace that is docile and controllable, rather than one which asks questions. educated people are a pain in the ass. they organise dissent. they write newspaper articles. they author books, and pamphlets. none of this pleases the aristocracy that runs the country. face it, folks...despite 30 storey buildings, and IKEA and TGI Fridays, the country is still, socially and politically, in the 17th century. it is still run by 10 or so interwoven, incestuous families, which trace their roots to the Santa Maria. go to Santiago, and look at businesses. the same names appear on car dealerships, hardware stores, you name it. guys like those do not want dissent.

It is all a big joke. All our corrupt officials want everyone as stupid as possible so they can steal from them and do whatever they want. They even want the other officials, military, and police to all be stupid for the same reasons. They are easier to control. Corruption is our number one problem and until fixed none of our other problems can ever be properly addressed.

Actually it is exactly like that. Everybody above 18 years old is able to vote. No debate between the candidates at all. Several times it has been suggested and all political parties have furiously deny to participate (even PLD that boast itself saying that all members on it's party are intellectuals). the votes are gained by giving cofrecitos to poor people, being a majority. The past elections they were even giving food (it was highly , activities to kill mosquitos in poor communities, you can see rich people in those places. People know them, vote for them and then get thrown away.

Negro, its true, NONE, No debate..... You can't have a debate on public intrest with a 5th grade education. The answers that would come out of those implanted assholes would be embarrasing as a dominican. By having an uneducated public, you can steer them like cattle. Its all a plan that will soon be over.

JimHarrington,
I hope the president and the first lady get impeached for treason against their own people. However, for the entertainment value of making you look like a clueless cretin...LOL.
I want you to check out Margarita Cedeño de Fernández academic credentials....LOL.
“She has a Doctorate in Law from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and a Masters in Economic Legislation from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. She also has participated in courses and seminars at Georgetown and Harvard University in the United States and Geneva University in Switzerland.”
