New York.- The ruling PLD party’s most feisty leader predicted that if president Leonel Fernandez seeks reelection in 2012 will suffer a great defeat, because despite the accomplishment of his three administrations toward building “his little New York,” a constitution amendment to keep a chief executive in power isn’t justified anywhere in the world.

There’s nothing that justifies a re-election in the country,” said Luis Inchausti, a member of the PLD’s Central Committee and one of Fernandez’s most staunch critics.

He praised however the Presidency’s large investments in major public works and social programs, but noted that the country needs a balance between that spending and the socio-economic conditions of the poorest.

“I believe that the President is going to finish in a year and a half and I think that he should take a rest, a break and not run the risk of being defeated in the 2012 elections,” Inchausti said, and warned that if Leonel seeks reelection, he would suffer a great defeat.

PLD leaders exhibit riches which nobody knows where they came from

He said his criticism that some of the members of the PLD’s top echelons have become millionaires “quickly” was taken out of context, adding that only three of his colleagues are millionaires with humility, “but not the rest,” mentioning José Tomás Pérez, Lidio Cadet and Jose Joaquín Bidó Medina, “who are rich but modest.”

“The others have lost their humility.”

“The PLD leaders in their form of dress, with the vehicles they have and the good life they live, flaunting mansions, villas and the luxury houses. There is an excess seen and when they go to a restaurant, they buy the most expensive drinks and eat the best,” he said.

He added that some PLD leaders “exhibit riches which nobody knows where they came from.”

Humility !!now that is a characteristic that is very rare in wealthy Dominicans .I associate humility with quietness and calm and reflectiveness as well as the lack of ostentatiousness and pretentiousness. But nearly all wealthy Dominicans behave like nouveau riche ,which of course they are, with garish displays of wealth
And of course LF should act within the spirit of the constitution and not stand again ...a quality of a good leader is to groom people to succeed them and LF has had plenty of time .I am sure that there are a number of young well educated Dominicans The trappings of office are a great temptation for leaders to unwisely hold onto them .
Sooner or later I am sure a leader will emerge who appreciates the failings of the current administration as well as the achievements that have been made and can lead the country in a positive way .

Lots of corruption, money laundering and drug dealing thats how they made their money. Quite obvious but this is why they don't want to put more money into education. If more Dominicans became educated these officials might not be able to keep robbing the coffers blind.

I think that if you look at what the various people in congress earn by way of wages, bouses and perks , that makes them wealthy to start with and if they are in a position to grant contracts or favours such as land acquisition or building permits then they are other ways to gain wealth , but I do not think we can say that all of them have gained wealth from money laundering or drug dealing although the rumour mill suggests that there are a few who have done that .
However , I do not see too many of them rocking the boat and all the politicians seem quite content to allow the appalling standards of conduct to continue .

I thank's "GOD" every day for not being a DR national. Although I grew there during the cold war era, what I read at this media, it's not how I remembered !!!!!

I am for the "Cascos Negros" to invade the National Palace and the re-stablishment of a cultural tradition "Rerspect".

As a Latin American who has lived in other countries including the U.S. and Europe, I have kept a keen watch on politics since moving here. I would like to predict a honkey dory future for this country. but I have no material to do it with. There are sweeping changes in our hemisphere, and even Uncle Sam's permanent project of anglo-american social darwinism in the hemisphere, the imperial satrapy of Puerto Rico, is becoming unhinged at the seams, due to the planetary capitalist crisis. The history of the Caribbean is intertwined and coherent, according to Prof. Juan Bosch. Many dream that the Dominican nation's historic stoicism will endure forever. I'm afraid that's wishful thinking. We are seeing the beginning of the end, of an elitist demagogue system, which will crumble under the weight of social movements, participatory democracy and 21st Century Socialism. :-)

What the country needs is a man/woman OF THE PEOPLE........who will not be outrageously greedy........Fernandez has become outrageously GREEDY..........and everyone who is associated with him.

The country needs a real leader who will fight for the people, not for the wealthy.

mariposa-"La historia del Caribe esta entrelazada y es coherente" -Tesis del Prof. Juan Bosch en su libro "El Caribe Frontera Imperial, de Cristobal Colon a Fidel Castro, Ed. Alfa & Omega, Santo Domingo, 2005".-The planetary capitalist crisis affecting Europe, is permanent and structural-The Dominican Republic doesn't have the wherewithal to balkanize itself from this crisis. The future of our Caribbean peoples lies with our authentic social movements, and not with the corrupt political elites. :-)
