SANTO DOMINGO.- With the inauguration of a modern Command and Control Center to view satellite images and of the radars acquired together with the Super Tucano intercept planes and equipment to heighten border security, the Government aims to escalate the war against drug trafficking via air and land.
Armed Forces Minister Pedro Rafael Peña said equipment bought for 9 million euros from Spain, including communications gear, transport equipment and two border precincts and several mobile posts look to technify the Border Security Corp (Cesfront), acquired with what he called a "soft," long term loan approved by Congress.
The Command and Control Center which will operate in San Isidro Airbase will be inaugurated today.
In June the government expects to have 8 more Super Tucanos acquired from Brazil.
The increase in drug trafficking is of such concern to all sectors, that the recent case of the Puerto Rican fugitive drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto and his Dominican paramour Sobeida Felix was called "a mockery of society" by president Leonel Fernandez.
The gangland murders of Figueroa’s associates, the involvement of the military and the actions of several judges have made society weary of excuses and demands more drastic action.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Authorities have discovered 28 airplanes in central Venezuela that were presumably being used by drug traffickers.
A security official from central Guarico state says the planes were found inside a hangar on the outskirts of El Sombrero. The town is located in a rural area about 143 miles (230 kilometers) from Caracas.
Hedy Ramirez told the state-run ABN news agency on Sunday that federal police and National Guard troops have taken control of the hangar and impounded the planes while investigations proceed.
The planes are mostly small aircraft typically used by drug runners.
Venezuela is a major hub for traffickers smuggling Colombian cocaine to the United States and Europe.......................Maybe they gave up ?

Sounds to me like a good plan. Although TELEMECO has some points here.
But this is the problem, new equipment is purchased in good faith by government officials. But great capabilities + no training = nothing.
For this equipment to be effective, a unit should be created specifically dedicated to this task. Background check, ability test, and after that is done intensive training by the manufacturers of the device to properly to give proper training to its operators. Along with a good monthly salary (and monitoring of banks accounts of everyone who works in the unit), proper management, and some what of secrecy of the personnel who operates the equipment to deter buy-offs from trafficker. And also accountability and a report should be given to the president every month on what is going on. Along with reports every time something happens. The key is to put one individual in charge and make him accountable for the whole unit. Is common sense.

The Govt buys equuipment to make the public believe that he is fighting against narcotrafico, while in fact, he hides the drugs inside the national palace! Look at the super tucanos, they arent still being used. Were they bought for decoration?
