SANTO DOMINGO. – An autopsy found that it was a heart attack which killed the driver in the accident when a bus plunged to the Caribbean Sea last Friday, with at least 11 people dead and 16 injured.

The authorities said the body of Roberto Familia, 50, was exhumed at the request of the Santo Domingo Office of the Prosecutor, for the necropsy.

Forensic Pathology Institute director Santo Jiménez had affirmed that the driver’s death was from natural causes, but today’s development also determined that the Familia had also suffered several previous attacks.

keep clear all you negative mind it that the cause of this terrible accident was not due to reckless driver, that is due to an act of nature which no one can anticipate or prevent. I am deeply sorry for the families of those that perished with him that sad Friday afternoon. very very sad and misfortune.

There is a portion of the road from the city to the Las Americas airport, that the highway comes very close to the ocean, specially in curves, and several vehicles have plunged into the sea lately, because of distractions, minor accidents, and falling asleep at the wheel.
This tragedy could have been prevented by installing the so called "New Jersey" type of cement barriers, that would have prevented the vehicle from plunging into the Caribbean. These barriers or another type of guard rail must be installed ASAP to prevent further fatalities.

Should anyone with a history of heart attacks, as stated in the above report, really be in control of a passenger carrying vehicle? Clearly this was an accident waiting to happen and those who lost their lives should not have been exposed to this risk. In other countries anyone with a health problem of this nature would never have been allowed to continue as a PSV driver.
