SANTO DOMINGO. - President Leonel Fernandez headed a tribute to Dominican Republic’s flag in Independencia Park on Thursday, as part of the Patriotic Month celebrations.
The ceremony featured the military honors for Fernandez, who was accompanied by the First Lady Margarita Cedeño, the vice president Rafael Alburquerque, his wife Marta Monte de Oca, as well as military and government officials, among others.
The first dominican flag was made in February 18, 1844, by the patriot Concepcion Bona, a member of the secret society headed by Juan Pablo Duarte, Los Trinitarios, which managed to rid the county of the Haitian occupation.

Loans to pay electricity bills
Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa has announced that the government is seeking to take on foreign loans to pay the arrears owed to the electricity generators. He said that talks for this purpose with the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank were under way.
He acknowledged that the Dominican government had committed to a payment plan for the US$450 million owed to the generator companies.

It is sad to read some of this comments posted here by our regular rant-oholic.
The flag does not represent the government of Leonel Fernandez nor any other president or political party, the DR flag is above and beyond any individual or doctrine and trying to high-jack a glorious moment of celebration by making pathetic references to government failures is totally moronic and out of place.
At the time this flag was created we as a nation had bigger problems, we were been slaved, exterminated and prosecuted in the name of “ a very different flag “ and the blood and sacrifice that propelled this beautifully design flag by one of our most celebrated women and hero of our independance fight Maria Trinidad Sanchez to the top of the pole is what WE DOMINICANS celebrate. We come a long way since our creation, for some people that is hard to comprehend, we are still evolving and have big issues but is no denying DR is sweet baby!

"lie-onel" this, "lie-onel" that...I don't think Leonel Fernández is perfect, but he is one of the best leaders this country has ever seen, like it or not. Elections are coming soon, and the two parties with the best chance of winning are the PLD and the PRD. We already know what happens everytime the PRD gets wins, so I guess this time I'll have to vote for the PLD and its allies again. Rather have them in power than the other guys.
