I saw the interview on DR TV with Nuria PIero about this low life Julio Romero. I can't believe these are the kind of people who run for office and actually get elected. He is a true representation of the quality of candidates under the PRD party. I have been to their political rallies and meetings and it is disgusting to see the overwhelming amount of low level people this party attracts.

The worse about the whole thing is to see how the parents actually condoned the relationship, with the hope of financial gain. They used their daughter as a possible ticket out of poverty and the old fart Romero used the minor for his sexual exploits. The parents were apalled, not because of the illicit nature of the matter, but because the scum bag Romero instead of facing responsibility, wanted to cut-out, wash his hands and jump ship, leaving everyone else to drown. This is a perfect example of how people who attempt to take advantage of each other in the end get hurt and everyone loses.

After reading some of the comments above, the problem has less to do with Romero or Hypolito, but more about societies norms and with issues of culture. I am not going to condemn Hypo for being blunt and forthright, that aspect of his personality I appreciate. But what he states is fact, a reality that is alive and well, quite prevalent, very common and happening within Dominican society today and also true among most third world, underdeveloped countries. Penalizing Romero is not going to fix the problem, but rather we must extract a practice that is deeply ingrained, somewhat accepted in our culture. It has been only in recent years, that have we become less rural more urban, a better organized country, with a more formal and diverse economy. Remember it has been not too long ago, that we were a predominately agricultural society, but today we have evolved into a globalized country and as such have acquired many aspects typical of developed nations. So don't be too surprise.

I am going to say something unpopular. The best thing that happened to that girl was the encounter with Julio Romero. She now has a steady monthly income and her child won't die of malnutrition. She can now go to school and can boast of having been Julio's lover. In the end, she is laughing all the way to the Bank. Julio was a fool and my sympathy goes to him. A lot has to do with Dominican male dominant culture and it starts at a young age, ever notice when local Men see attractive Woman in public streets, one can hear the whistles, obvious stares and cat calls miles away.

I agree with the postings in response to my observations. GUILLEMON, I think Julio is a dumb ass that has not surpassed the cultural morass and entanglements in the DR. For someone representing the people, you should expect a higher order of thinking and behaving. He set himself up for chasing young women and for not using a condom (both actions are stupid). My daughter visited Punta Cana and had to bitch slap two Russian men that thought she was a prostitute and kept offering her money. We can't close our eyes to the fact that the DR is a major sex trade destination.

GUILLEMON, your point is dead centered. Its about the enactment of laws and their enforcement. Things are better for women in the DR but so much more needs to be done. It's also about education, jobs and empowerment. I know these 50 year old men that go to the DR quarterly just to screw young girls. Why does this happen, "se la estan buscando." Same dynamic in Cuba, Cambodia, South Africa, etc... Another guy I know of, he screwed this 13 year old in the DR and her family took him to court. The girl and her family received money and land.
