Santo Domingo. - Mary Peláez, indicted on charges of laundering money for the ring headed by Puerto Rican fugitive Jose Figueroa Agosto today said the country is “barking up the wrong tree” if it tries to eradicate drug trafficking with her and affirmed that contrary to others implicated in the case, she has an “ace up her sleeve” which she’ll reveal in due time.

Peláez, speaking in a heaping in the National District Appellate Court which upheld her incarceration in the case, said she has never seen drugs nor money from drug trafficking and doesn’t own the many properties the Prosecution claims.

She said she feels safe in the jail at Najayo and doesn’t fear for her life or those of her relatives.

As to the confusing incident in which two agents assigned to tail her sister Dolphy tried to enter the penitentiary, she affirms not having any details, because she received the information while in her jail cell.

She reiterated her innocence and said she doesn’t believe the case would be solved using “scapegoats.” She said her biggest error was to say she didn’t know Figueroa, because it has led to confusion. “I only meant to say that I didn’t have a close friendship with him.”
