SANTIAGO. - Although she affirms her confectioner's business makes in just one day what she earns monthly as director of Santiago’s Ornate, Plazas and Parks Department, Sarah Bernardita “Benny” Sued says her only interest in the City Council is to contribute with the city and help her brother, the mayor Jose Enrique Sued, whose administration has paid millions to the that family’s business, as well as to other close friends.
Since 2002 Benny Sued heads that Department whose monthly payroll is RD$897,070, of which 16.7% (RD$149,997) is paid to assistants and aides.
Among the City Council’s employees and services suppliers are her daughters, her ex husband Manuel Perez, one of her sons-in-law and one of her daughter’s ex husband.
The official is also linked to the company “Benny’s Postres Eventos y Algo Mas,” which has billed Santiago several million pesos for services.
A list of City Council payments obtained by news source clavedigital.com shows that just in 2009 the Mayor’s Office wrote a total of RD$3.89 million in checks to Benny Sued, of the confectioner “Benny Eventos y Algo Mas,” as well as to other close friends of the official.
The document also reveals that just in 2009 the City Council wrote a total of RD$1.72 million in 19 checks out to “Benny Eventos y Algo Mas” or her associates.

The whole Sued family has being living off off the municipality of Santiago, for many years, and their cara dura mega-corrupt mayor and candidate wants four years as mayor for the PLD-PRSC.
The Sued's have been sucking on the tit of professional politics since Trujillo, then Balaguer and now the PLD.
It is time these fat porkies get a job and leave a little meat on the municipality's bones, for some new hungry mayor to chew on.

No wonder the PLD wants Sued as their candidate.
He understands their way of doing business. Is it true that last year Sued paid more than 800,000RD for baseball tickets?
I'm not as upset about the $1.7million paid for candy. Take a look at the mayor and you'll know where that money went.

Gen I agree with you on the corruption, but they've done a lot of good for Santiago. Currently we have the nicest, most organized and beautiful parks in all of the country. I posted some pictures recently of one of them and its just stunning. I wish someone would come along and do the job well without stealing away all they can. I remember Moronta who was a dishwasher in NYC, then sindico with the PRD. That man let the city fall into ruins and filled with garbage. He did nothing at all for Santiago, not a side walk, not a park, not a church, not a single repair, yet no one ever questioned his tenure.

Honorable Generoso,
Well said.
This is what I see as major problem in DR, regarding grafting and the like, and that is that the people are so accustomed to getting screwed that they've come to accept the overt shenaniganism because the perpetrators did something nice and now the streets are paved and the parks are beautiful and clean, etc.
To me, these are feelings of an underexpecting and under-receiving populace that will continue to get screwed in perpetuity. We see similarly with the election of presidents, and what annoys me even more is that every time any politician, or anybody taking advantage of photo-ops, states anything even remotely logical-immediately, everyone clamors for that individual to become president.
If we expect and demand more, we will get more and be better off for it.
I couldn't care less how much good a politician may have done; if caught grafting, I want him prosecuted to full extent of law. No exceptions or pardons.

Municipalities are fairly autonomous entities and get their funds (a set percentage) religiously from the Liga Municipal Dominicana, which is another unnecessary thieves den, which has no real function except to funnel the central government's monies after they take their cut.
Most all municipalities without exception are coveted jobs throughout the country and a way of enrichment. Even a "regidor" in a big city ayuntamiento is a job that most politicians will do anything to get, because of all the corruption opportunities, even on a daily and weekly basis.
And Sajomero I understand what you are saying, but as progressive Dominicans we can not tolerate and accept a token less corruption than the guy before, but our standard should be: Zero Tolerance, and then and only then we might get away with a lower 20 or 30% corruption rate, which for our young nation, is a figure we can live with for the present, hoping to decrease it as our voting population gets more educated.

I agree 100% with you statements as per mine above. I like the example of the abused wife who regularly gets beat up by her husband, and yet does not leave him hoping it will get better, as a couple of days pass without being beat up. You can not be complacent when crumbs of affection are thrown at you, but you must demand respect and integrity 100% of the time.
If a public servant throws some crumbs of public works at us and steals 75% of the income, yes it is better than someone stealing 100%, but we want and should expect much better than that.
Dominicans have this genetic memory that the state is the "vaca" that should feed all, and specially those are particularly close to her tits, and we have to understand that a "public servant's" job is to serve others, not himself.

No need to apologize, my reply will be better understood. But the answer is obvious, to do away with the Liga creates LF more opposition and takes away votes, even though it will be much better for the country not to have that toll gate.

Politicians in DR like to suck on public moneys, and keep some or a lot to themselves, like a feeding child. Even the priests in DR are business men also.
But even with all the corruption, graft, influence peddling going on, The DR is becoming a regional political force, thanks to the proven statesmanship of Leonel Fernandez.
There are minuses, but they are also many pluses, and the government is running well, showing leadership to other more powerful countries.

You guys are still in the little leagues. RD3.89 million is $111,000+ US. Now you know where the term "Banana Republic" comes from when you hear in the US that corruption in Washington is starting to resemble a "Banana Republic". I live in a city in the US that has a population of around $250,000. The city gives millions of Dollars every year to cronies of the city government and even when it's discovered, nothing ever happens. Just look what Goldman Sachs alone has done to the US. I know that the DR is a lot poorer than the US but corruption is ALL the same. The sad thing is your corruption is in millions and even billions of pesos, here in the US it's billions and trillions of dollars.
