SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Government heightened security along its border with Haiti, to prevent the entry of a group of more than 2,000 convicts of Haitian and other nationalities, who fled Port-au-Prince jails in the wake of the January 12 quake.

Yesterday Immigration director Sigfrido Pared said the Haiti Government provided the list of names and photos of the inmates who escaped Haiti’s penitentiary, which collapsed during the quake, among them Colombians, Pakistanis, Indians and others, in addition to Haitians.

Perez said the information has prompted bolstered controls in all border crossings, to keep the escapees from entering the country, in coordination with the military and the Border Security Corp (Cesfront). "We already have the photos of all the people who fled the jails in Port-au-Prince, naturally we have no information so far that they’ve crossed into Dominican Republic, at least not officially.”

He said regardless of how dangerous the prisoners who escaped are, nor how many have managed to deceive the Haitian authorities, it’s a topic of concern for the Dominican Government to protect its borders. “We remain alert to prevent being surprised by the entry of the escapees from Haitian jails."

Now? Seems a little late.

Does this mean that extra effort will be made to prevent only these people from entering illegaly. The normal 10,000 illegals per day will still be allowed to enter at will, but these 2000 will be prevented from entering? I am not sure I understand what the immigration director is saying, other than, "Hey look at me, I'm making an announcement."

If they were coming they would be here already! They have had plenty of time to cross the border by now. Another case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Intresting.

Dominicans should be encouraged to form neighbourhood watch groups to identify and inform the police or appropriate authorities of any new faces in their neighbourhood.
Last time I stayed at my house in Puerto Plata , I was shocked to see so many suspicious Haitians faces loitering in the barrio where there were only a few Haitians before the earthquake.
This had became the talk of concerned families.
A friend informed me that he rented a room to a Haitian familiy of three(wife , husband ,and daughter) just to find out that there were 8 more people sleeping in the house at night.
Althought he felt for them but he could not affort to have 11 people living a room.
Haitian leaders should start acting like grownups and provide for their poeple so they do not become a public nuisance for another country

Increase CESFRONT by 10,000 men... to properly guard our border... Take them from the Army, whom have no enemies to fight and are just there collecting a check.... If done so it would help the DR in the following ways

1. The army would be put to good use [not abusing the populance]
2. Haitians would stop coming in to use our resources and facilities
3. Lower income Dominican wages will increase due to the lack of Haitians presence
4. Domincans will no longer will need to go abroad for a liveable wage
5. The pissed off haitians who wont be able to immigrate to the DR will start a revolution that would get that nation moving forward to job creation or the elite will die beaten by an angry mob of hungry zombies...

MissHaiti,

Criminals are criminals period, they pray on the weak, confused, destitute, hungry, hopeless and helpless, like they do in Cuba & Venezuela just ask Belial an expert on such matters.

Just think if Haiti is to have a future all criminals must be re-arrested and jailed at all cost, like they do in Cuba & Venezuela minus the fare trials.

While just this morning I read a report of an Haitian-American who was shot numerous times in the back by a Haitian all while protecting his property in Haiti.

Do not demonised haiti
They have help the Dominican also.

Look!!

In 1861, after imprisoning, silencing, exiling, and executing many of his opponents and due to political and economic reasons, Santana signed a pact with the Spanish Crown and reverted the Dominican nation to colonial status, the only Latin American country to do so. His ostensible aim was to protect the nation from another Haitian annexation. But opponents launched the War of the Restoration in 1863, led by Santiago Rodríguez, Benito Monción, and Gregorio Luperón, among others. Haiti, fearful of the re-establishment of Spain as colonial power on its border, gave refuge and supplies to the revolutionaries. After two years of fighting, Spain abandoned the island in 1865.

See!!

The pragmatic , mature leadership and adult supersvision that Leonel Fernadez has demonstrated during the tragedy that had rocked Haiti must inspire Haitians to understand the well founded concerns of regular Dominicans
They can not feed themselves and Haitians at the same time .This is what creates the historical conflicts and frictions
The DR can not be an escape route for Haitians when the turbulent , greedy, selfish teenagers that are running Haiti team up to destroy the country and make it unliveable for Haitians

You and I might be self dependent now, but we were not always self dependent. At a point in our lives we needed someone help. That is where the Haitians are right now. They don’t need hand outs like they have always been giving, they need real help.

As far as the Haitians being unfortunate.....YES ! we can both agree the Haitian Gov has dealt the Haitian People a raw deal.

But consider, a large % of skilled Haitian workers jumped the border into the DR post quake which could have a negative economic impact on the DR.

Other then GIVING Haitian aide where's the incentive to help the Haitians re-build there own Country ?

Haitians could start by planting there own food [now that a large % of forest have cleared, perfect for farming] Haiti has many skilled laborers in construction, are you kidding me ! what ever happened to "Where there's a will, there's a way", "Necessity is the Mother of invention".

As far as being "self dependent"......You and I are living examples, if we were helped we took advantage. The Haitians have been DEPENDENT for how many years ?
I'll repeat....."Give a Man fish he'll eat for a day becoming DEPENDENT, Teach a Man to fish he'll eat everyday thus becoming SELF DEPENDENT"

Haiti has plenty of natural resources at it's disposal.

Haiti has a large working force.

Haiti has been low for so long the way out, is UP !

Haitians needs a mass douse of NATIONAL PRIDE, that can only come from within.

Haitians must show the world Haiti they can do it, FOR THEM SELVES !

The world can pump BILLIONS $$ more, but in the end it's up to the Haitian People to choose their OWN DESTINY.

Maybe what the Haitians really NEED and LACK is GANAS.

riosm my friend,
I understand your point about the skilled Haitians workers that left and went to DR. If you take a look at the situation within, you cannot really blame them. I truly believe if these folks have the support and help they need from the Haitian GOV, the country would be better. They have done it before.

Haitian people have the will to be self dependent, but I believe that chance was taking away from them by corrupt Gov.

You can be skilled and have the will to work, but if you don’t have your own GOV support you are not going to succeed...................

@ Riosm,

You said “Haitians could start by planting their own food and now that a large % of forest have cleared, perfect for farming”

I wish that was a reality my friend. Haiti’s agriculture has been destroyed since the 1980 my friend by a number of actions supported by the Haitian Government for their own benefit.

Yes we have the land, but not the means for production. YOU are right, farming could sustain most of the country, but give the peasants the chance to do it is another story. The peasants are in needed water, seed, fertilizer, insecticide……… Instead the international community gave them food aid which destroyed the AGRICULTURE MORE.

I am not trying to point fingers at any other nations, but Haiti is where it is today is not because of the Haitian folks are lazy and they do not want to be self dependent. The advantage you and I are talking has never been given to the Haitian folks. Maybe the Haitian GOV, but not the people.
