Santo Domingo.- Two Americans died in Dajabón province near the border with Haiti, when a helicopter operating in the humanitarian effort went down in the water yesterday.

The pilot John Ward and the copilot James Jalovec, reportedly U.S. citizens, died in the crash.

Dajabon province governor Miguel Cruz confirmed the information, but noted that the lumber of people on board hasn’t been determined. "We were told that two passengers died, they are foreigners."

The U.S. registry chopper 753F went down at around 7 p.m. near the village Palo Quemado, near the town Restauración, some 250 kilometers northeast of the capital Santo Domingo.

Locals withess  "fiery crash.”

“We searched their pockets and noted that the documents were in English,” said the agronomist Socrates Contreras (Nini), one of the first to arrive at the crash site. “It was flying with the engine sputtering but it was dark and they managed to avoid one hill, but hit the next one and came down in a fiery crash.”

He said Dajabon Assistant DA Marcia Domínguez was the first official to arrive in the scene, guided by the farmer association leader Isidoro Santana (Chongo).

Sad lost of life that maybe could have been avoided. Bad weather, poor visibility and a treacherous border mountain region, are a prescription for a tragedy. The crash occurred in Palo Quemao between Jimeno and Jina Mocha which is 69 km south of Dajabón.
Night flying under those conditions without an IFR rating, and adequate radar has caused many a crash in that same mountainous border zone. Even with an IFR rating is still very risky, and pilots flying over the Haiti-DR border should postpone their night travels, until next morning, or when weather clears up.
